Why have we lost our ability to focus? What are the causes? And, most importantly, how do we get it back?
Today’s guest and author of the brilliant new book, Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention, went on a three-year journey to uncover the reasons why our teenagers now focus on one task for only 65 seconds, and why office workers on average manage only three minutes. Johann Hari interviewed more than 200 leading experts in the world on attention, and learned that everything we think about this subject is wrong.

I'm an educator...detentions make me lose my shit! You are spot on. We also overuse tech and do not teach about emotions, other than how to suppress, deny or ignore them. School is the recipe for poor mental health outcomes.

I have been listening to your podcasts for over a year now. This one was definitely one of my favorites! I have been trying to incorporate many of the things mentioned on the podcast in my own life since 2018. Prior to Covid, I kept praying that my life would slow down and I would get some peace. Well….my prayers were answered. The pandemic actually was good for me….forced me to a slower pace and now I love doing things I actually enjoyed in my younger years again. So many interesting points made in this podcast. Will definitely be buying this book.

Profound discussion...thank you! Omicron and a total hip replacement 6 weeks ago gave me "permission " to stop, get as much sleep as I need, and I was unable to attend to anything on the to do list while healing...and isolating. It was brilliant.. the first thing I felt was massive relief and a feeling of calm. I need to find the balance when I can resume "normal" activity levels. That was an existential epiphany.

Thank you Ragan for another wonderful interview... I think this one is my favourite. Johann's ability to tell a story and educate you while keeping you highly engaged for over 2 hours and still wanting more... is remarkable. I think we crave this deep dive and insightful information in a time of deprivation. Also, to be so genuine and emotionally aware, not everyone has the ability to make certain changes is another insight as to how connected he is. I think there are more beautiful souls out there than we're lead to believe. Fear and disconnection is what makes rich people richer ♡

This has been my line of thinking too, in that an excessive amount of food and entertainment (bread and circus being the archaic language) as a strategy to alleviate boredom, leaves us more vulnerable to wanting simplistic solutions to nuanced and complex issues. Imagine being in the middle of a gaming session. Your partner asks what you want done with an old lottery ticket in your back trouser pocket, before they go in the wash. You opt for the immediate simple solution and say "bin it". With the appropriate focus your partner might check it truly belongs in the waste bin.

I loved this conversation. It's about taking back individuality, creativity...freedom or personal JOY. A teacher so disappointed, depressed by the system, control, steals your joy. Some students need detention- but, the detention should be to involve a parent, a social worker and a discussion for what next steps are needed. Education extremely too much, extremely fast paced, test driven- in a life that eventually ends, so what's the extreme or hurry of anything other than a fire. Stealing individuality, creativity and joy necessary & deserved in life.

Brilliant podcast with lots of useful guidance. We follow you from Japan and, as parents of a 15 year old boy, we could not agree more with your comments on how detrimental homework on the screen is for our children. All things went well until secondary school, when our school requires that all students MUST have an electronic device to access Google Docs, Google classroom and the like. We tried to block KZbin at home but the school also uses it for "educational" purposes of some sort so that was not an option. I would be very interested to hear the opinion of a teacher on this but how we see it, it appears that having things online makes it easier for the teachers and for the school so this is something that works to their advantage. And this may be the main reason why it is being so widely implemented, I guess, despite it being detrimental to the kids and giving more hard work to the parents who are left to supervise this continuous online activity.

Jan 15, 2022. Randomly, I was just commenting on an aviation site about current government moves in the US to finally ban lead in avgas after decades of talking about it. I know my lead exposure from infancy was significantly higher than average. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 40s and that lead exposure may contributed to a lifetime of attentional issues. As I've been giving more attention to my focus (so many puns possible), I've never been more pleased to live in this current era, while also never more aware of how much we're screwing things up.

In todays world everything is moving to quickly because we dont stop to reflect take time out to connect to our higher self, to examine our hearts, to see who we really are to be our true selves , to live in the moment, we are always concerned with the next step the next thing on our list, like the poem says do we stop to smell the roses, do we noe acknowledge what and whos around us , our we selfless as is our true self, or have we forgotten about those around us. Fantastic! Johann no doubt it's been said before but i personally felt prompted to say it myself: Obviously those burger joints aren't too cool, and i certainly wouldn't want to encourage any bad/unhealthy habits, but I can't be the only one who thinks A) Respect for your honesty, and MORE IMPORTANTLY (B) I love all the guests on this awesome podcast! You though Johann are the first of all the TOTALLY SWITCHED-ON SPECIALISTS IN HEALING, that i have ever seen/heard, who has such fallibilities as being into fast food (for example) AND that is so very UNRESERVED regarding such weaknesses! I wouldn't underestimate the potential MASS APPEAL of this quality which in my 'HERE AND NOW' is UNIQUE...POSITIVELY UNIQUE! Your information is absolute top dollar and i expect that I will definitely be listening to this again. One day (very soon indeed) when one has got ones shit together, one will be buying your book. I really do love all these healers, they all, along with yourself Rangan, who apart from being in the premier league of sincere healing information, you also do such a great job with your podcast and the selection of your guests ...awesome guests! I'm sounding a bit arse kissy now, a bit sycophantic, but I just felt the need to iterate that I'm not at all DOWN on any of your guests, they all help me! It's just the extra wee human touch you have Johann; it's just that huge bit more inspirational to myself, and so it just stands to reason that there's plenty more potential healers with big imperfections that take a special reassurance of being on the right track, thanks simply to your openness. Thank you both for such a great conversation, and I for one look forward to you reuniting for another uplift. With love, Gratitude, Appreciation, Respect. I am new to using something other than a Dingaling phone, otherwise there'd be a few heart emojis.

Oh my goodness this is an amazing podcast. I’ve done nothing today. I need to turn off my iPad and stop listening to Rangan. Lol Rangan you have hijacked my day! I’m going to put you in the cupboard now before you steal anymore of my time😂😂😂Same for you Johann. I never heard of you before but you got me hooked. When I worked as a TA in a primary school I used to opt to deliver my part of the lesson outside where I would incorporate lots of physical activity in the children’s learning. I do not believe children learn best by being confined especially when only four or five years old.

Not a safe place and time to walk freely. Danger is out there. Threats to kids. Have to be protected. An unsafe society compels outside safety. If parents can be educated to teach freedom of play in the home, stress on kids is much less. Working parents have so much stress, kids feel it. What a world of anxiety. Even dogs are affected? Thanks for all you do and write to amend the pressures. Have to get your BOOK.

Two very passionate people here! A long talk but so worth the time, though I’m guessing there’s so much more that could have been delved into. Definitely need a part 2! I like to think I have quite good attention, though maybe not so good on the focus front but even as someone over 60 who is certainly not wedded to my phone it’s easy to get distracted by notifications etc. Clearly there are many other things these days robbing attention not just technology & it doesn’t make for a happy, balanced & productive society. BTW I’m so with Johann when he says if his place was on fire at 4.30am he’d be thinking this is how it ends! I’m so not a morning person!

This was awesome! Some people are extremely different and they also learn differently. It’s all about motivation. Also personality and IQ of course-those things are the foundation of personality and personal goals. Super high IQ people who are very different in their interpretations of things can be COMPLETELY left out of the entire world picture of everyone! Talk about feeling like an alien… I don’t even know where to begin. I basically could never use my gifts or help humanity-which is my life purpose and meaning for why I suffer being who I am and being so isolated. I literally cannot be social at the “normal” levels. There is no place for me in the world and it’s doubly frustrating because I have predicted most of the entire intellectual trajectory of the past 30 years and I have a way to view the universe which solves almost all the current paradoxes and problems-but no one will listen because no one knows me and I don’t have the same social skills. I am social at a much deeper and time-transcendence level… so I have knowledge which is as revolutionary and important as Newton, or Darwin or something but I watched pieces of it coming out detached for 20 years… after I left graduate school to write a book because everyone was wrong. Not at just my school, but everywhere. They couldn’t even see how they were wrong. What do I do about that? I even solved or predicted basic issues that would help people every day-when I had kids, I looked at the formula and it did not have the best lipids so I found and added them. Like a year later Research came out showing decreased IQ from formula which can be ameliorated by adding proper lipids. My whole life is like that. I could help people, help children and schools and nations… I am not saying “maybe” -I CAN. Since I left graduate school I don’t even have a PHD so people won’t listen. I am so far past the Phd it’s like I am a different friggin species because I was smart enough to not let school compromise my motives or ability to integrate and think. I had over 10,000 books at one point. I quite literally could advance ANY field of human inquiry easily. But I don’t have an interface. I am not “entertaining” -well I think I am 😂. 🤷‍♀️ I can’t get people online to interview me either. So yeah the educational system failed me so badly. I was able to get through grade school and high school by never doing homework and staying home a ton to read books and think. I nearly flunked every grade-yet I was able to get into college on probation based on super high ACT scores and I didn’t even study for it. People freaked all the time because I would get the highest score on exams-by integrating the knowledge into a working whole. I think with much more than most people can imagine is possible. I feel like a Stargate alien-the benevolent good kind!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!!! 🙏🏻❤️‍🔥🙏🏻❤️‍🔥🙏🏻❤️‍🔥

In order to have children not have to get up so early, we have to, societally, support parents not having to get to work so early. Many little ones go to early bird daycare before school starts because parents need to get to work so early or have commutes that take a lot of time.

I totally agree with the school system but you have to realize that school is sometimes a safe place for kids from abusive homes. Sometimes school is the only meal they get. I’m here in the United States. If we could have an option for kids like the boys and girls clubs where they got a meal and had a protected place to go. I don’t know if the boys and girls clubs still exist. I grew up low income and I really benefited from that place. I got to be active and engage with other kids outside of school. It was a safe place off the streets to be and free to do what ever activity you wanted and jump from one to another after cleaning up after yourself. If they offered a simple meal like a sandwich and chips that would be amazing. Then I think not starting school till they’re seven and classes until 230 would be perfect. Another good thing is we had to have a membership to the club. I’m not sure if it cost anything. I know it couldn’t have been much cause we were struggling back then. I just know that school is some kids safe place and sometimes the only meal they get and it’s extremely important to not take that from a child that that could be life or death or being abused and getting a full meal.

Very interesting. I just tried to shear this. F b would not allow it. I agree, the phone takes a lot of time. I don't have a TV and watch the internet to much. I spend most of my spear time studding, reading and being outside.

It's funny, but as I am watching this, I have ads popping up on the bottom of the screen about a product I had to buy online during my workday for a work project. The company thinks that I want to buy the product for myself personally so they keep bugging my personal computer because some of my connections from my work computer are linked.

I believe covid (germ warfare) threw adults and children to isolate with their phone that became their companions and how we could escape from reality that we know is scary and taking us away from reality saves our lives . Those of us with a hobby turned to that hobby to save ourselves.

"When the curriculum is the goal, the child is the enemy."
@kikijewell2967

This is why there are continual "revolutions" in education: our society can't let go of the list of (arbitrary) curriculum goals. (Why not teach good finances? Creativity? Self reflection? Healthy cooking? These would make better curricula. Why not measure the child's progress on Maslow's Hierarchy to start?) _The child is constructing the adult they will become!_ A well rounded adult is the goal. The curriculum is the _tool._ (I wrote this quote based on a saying in medicine: "treat the patient, not the monitor.")

Computers consume our lives a distraction. I still like books. It's helps to put them down 3 -4 days even in a week. I still like hard copy of a lot of things. There more feelings in it. You put it down and later pick it up. Computers take away from human touch levels.
