"Old Nick" is a name I've absolutely never heard of for the Devil. I've heard quite a few of them as well, but never that one particular. I've heard of it for Santa Claus, but never the devil.....
@johnspence971811 ай бұрын
This is the best explanation I can give you. Around the 1600's the English coined the phrase - Ol'' Nick meaning one performing inequities (or sinful behavior.) Somewhere about the 1800's, the British also started calling the jail/prison as "The Nick." Basically, a place on earth filled with those committing inequities, or a true 'den of inequity.' So, it was a combination of slang, and a contraction or abbreviation of two words shortened (you know how lazy we are, or how the devil loves 'sloth') into the one...Nick, or Ol' Nick. Christmas time is totally different. There Christians are referring to Saint Nicholas, or Old St. Nick, not the devil. At least at first. IDK for sure, but I can say in my 60+ years I have seen many words, phrases switched to mean the exact opposite. "Gay" meant to be happy. Then it became derogatory slang based on someone's sexuality. And please don't get me started on intentional misspellings simply to be different, or cool. I hope this helps some. Please, let me know if I made sense. I'd also like to know if you ever heard the term, "Spring Heeled Jack." That's another great story of that old dragon, Satan, and how he lies in wait for us.
@glencalhoun954411 ай бұрын
@@johnspence9718 That was the absolute MOST Amazing Reply I have ever received!!! Thank You!!! Most of the time it's someone who just wants to argue or name call. You actually gave me the answer I was truly looking for!!! I'm with you on the intentional misspelling of words for "Coolness" or whatever it is they think it's accomplishing..... Smh....

Thanks. I love etymology & it seems more needed now than ever. But I live in Baltimore, MD. I shudder to think how a spelling bee would turn out here. Since we are renown as Baltimorons you must take what most of us say with a grain of salt Look out for Ol' Nick. And I will do the same. I love the whole line of comedic hell stories. Franken Teddy, or Day at the DMV (take a number please) are my favorites. @@glencalhoun9544

I don’t know why I love stories about hell, demons, and topics surrounding the biblical concept of the destination for evil people in the afterlife. Maybe because I grew up in a southern Baptist family where things like fire and brimstone and demons and Satan were the main characters in the sermons on Sunday morning services.

3 yrs or 30 yrs, a forced "I Love You" is still a FAKE "I Love You"!!! If you force those words you will absolutely NEVER be able to fully believe them, because you will always know you forced it to be said before the true emotion was felt. There by making it completely impossible to ever truly believe.......... Be careful with what you force in life. That 1 choice can cause a life of doubt.....
