Right. There's always a couple "experts" that try to make a name for themselves by intentionally spreading misinformation, usually along the lines of "I discovered secret information the medical community is hiding from you!" No doubt he probably has a product of his own that's miraculously a "cure" for the particular ailment he claims to be an expert on. Or selling a book, podcast, something. There's usually always a financial motive for this behavior. We always have to be sure to look into these sorts of things on our own, too. Never take bold claims at face value. May I ask why you wore sunscreen regularly in the early 80s? The effects of UVA rays on aging haven't been studied as extensively back then and all sunscreens available at that time were not broad spectrum (only formulated to protect against UVB rays). The only FDA approved chemical UVA filter Avobenzone hasn't been approved until 1988 and mineral sunscreens have not been anywhwere near cosmetically elegant at that time and nobody would have worn it daily. So what was the point?
@kelleycranny3972 Жыл бұрын
@@crystalclear7512 wrong, number one I'm very fair skin blue-eyed and we live in Southern California and moving here from Michigan when I was nine. We regularly bought a sunscreen called Ti-screen, and it was one of the few sunscreens that had Avobenzone. It was very well known about sunscreen usage in the '80s lol I don't know where you're getting that information from! The problem was the lack of available sunscreens that protected against UVA which is why we bought the Ti-screen because it was the only one that was face-friendly and had the avobenzone in it. I used that particular sunscreen for quite a few years until they started coming out with better ones. Living in Southern California and going to the beach as a blonde blue-eyed white girl and not wanting to get fried, believe me sunscreen was a very important thing in our household! The only problem was being called Casper and white girl! Lol funny though I never gave into peer pressure and did not allow myself to tan. Smart move that I don't regret.

And then media picks the “story” up to further exacerbate the fear mongering because it generates views/interest. Thank you so much for clearing this up. But another issue also exists: medical comunity sometimes take way too long to adress a problem with a drug/device due to not listening to patients and dismissing data that brings bad side effects. It's not new and quit indicated in literature the effects of retinols in adipose tissue cells and there are many reports. But the product produces so great short/long term results for skin surface that this situation is dimissed and ignored - we all hate losing our "Holly Grail".

I started with Tretinoin a few years ago using 0.05%. Prior to that, I used retinol creams. I now juggle between both types. I’ve never had a side effect, except maybe for some slight dryness or flaky skin. Sometimes I’ll use a very light serum or moisturizer under the Tretinoin if I’m feeling sensitive. I also don’t use it every day and alternate with things like Vitamin C or Glycolic acid. It has always seemed safe and effective to me. Thanks for this video.

I seen another video of his where he said he discovered skincare because he used his wife's face cream and realized it made his skin softer and he thought "why aren't women aware of face cream?" Or something like that, like because he used his wife's face cream he seemed to think he was the first person to ever discover face cream ? It was odd. Everytime he talks he seems to be coming from the idea that women, his audience, could not possibly know anything at all about skincare already on our own. Tretinoin got rid of my dark elbows that even 4% hydroquinone wasn’t able to lighten. It also got rid of 90% of the visible sun spots I had on my upper back, shoulders, and forearms. It even removed the fine line that was in between my eyebrow & forehead COMPLETELY. And it drastically smoothed out my neck creases. Glad I took a “before” photo so I can see if there was actually any progress other than treating my acne. 0.1% tretinoin is the only thing I changed in my skin care routine in the past couple years, so I know for a fact that’s what is helping. I can’t argue with the results! Thank you for this video Dr Dray!

I’ve been using prescription tretinoin for over 6 years. How I knew it was really working is when a very prominent scar on my forehead starting smoothing out. I was in an automobile accident when I was 14 and hit the windshield so hard it pulled out a chunk of my hair and several layers of skin. It’s ALWAYS been a weird and bumpy square patch for my entire life. It is as smooth as the rest of my skin now. I’m also 55 and no one ever believes that is my age. I started when I was 49 with pretty decent skin to begin with. But this has been a game changer. I have never experienced any adverse reactions and I also have sensitive skin.

Wow, there is evidence to support what happened to my skin. I couldn't find a single article online that could explain the fat loss, dryness, and fine lines on cheeks after one year of using retin a in my twenties. Stopping retin a reversed all these issues, though it took about 4 years for my skin to go back to normal. At first on retin a, my skin had a taut, shiny look. When I compare pics from before retin a, my before skin looked more plump and youthful. While on retin a, my skin maintained the shiny look, but appeared to lose some volume (though not highly noticeable since my skin was young). I stopped using the product because I got tired of hiding from the sun always. Then the worst came after I stopped using retin a. I started to see the veins under my eyelid skin and my facial skin just looked crepey and dry. My skin then began to take on a dull appearance. It was as if the retin a over the course of usage was quietly damaging my skin and caused inflammation which made my skin look taut and shiny (but it wasn't due to a build up of collagen). I didn't even think it was the retin a that caused those effects because everything I read said it did the opposite. One eyelid started to droop a little (looked crepey). It took a while for the inflammation/whatever damage occurred to begin healing. Over time I noticed that my skin started to go back to how it was before retin a. I only used retin a to clear skin of dark spots. I didn't have any issues with fine lines or dryness before retin a. In fact I had oily skin. It took about 4 years to go back to normal. People close to me commented on how my skin changed. I'm so glad I stopped. Maybe most people react well to it, but I know it wreaked havoc on my skin.

I used Retin-A in my mid 20s for acne. It made me skin smooth and pretty but I also could swear that it thinned my skin, so I stopped using it. This was over 10 years ago and I've been waiting for this topic to be discussed. I understand dermatologists say that it's thickens the skin and builds collagen, so I'm not sure why I observed thinning skin. Maybe it wasn't really thinning, maybe there is some other side effect I was observing, who knows. Research and seek advice, but at the end of the day, we are all the doctor's of our own bodies and have to make the decisions for ourselves.

@rarediamond1011 Жыл бұрын
As Dr. Dray mentions in this video, the so called "thinning" of the skin most of the time is from normal aging and fat loss in the face that happens naturally as we get older. It's around the mid to late 20s when people start losing their "baby fat" on the face. Fat and collagen are two different things, and Tretinoin helps with building collagen, not fat. It's most likely a case of "correlation does not imply causation". My aunt has used Trenition for about 30 years at this point and her skin is incredible, and she's had zero botox/filler, etc.

Dr. Dray, thank you for taking the time to deobfuscate this. Scientific literacy is very important. Galanin's misrepresentation of facts which contradict their scientific findings, due to misunderstood scientific terminology, is very significant. edit: Thank you for all of the sources citing the efficacy of retinoids! edit 2: My cynical opinion, but Ivan Galanin has a financial stake in his Adipeau - of course he is going to present "data" that incentivizes skincare users to seek out an alternative - especially those who may be experiencing adverse short-term effects of retinoids right at the beginning of use. To me, this feels very Wakefield-esque (ie: inventing data to discredit MMR while getting a patent for new formulation ... ). That being said, I don't know that Galanin has a medical background - his background seems to be in Corporate Finance.

The video from The Honest Channel motivated me to read an detailed study on Pub Med about the effects of vitamin A derivatives including tretinoin in all its formulations. The study actually cited the exact opposite of what the experts claimed on The Honest Channel! In addition the study did not even recommend discontinuation of use when experiencing skin irritation as the study found that skin irritation resolves in two weeks and does not seem to prevent the beneficial effects of the vitamin A derivative. “ The most noteworthy, but unexpected observation in this study was the rapid accommodation of the skin to retinoid side effects occurring within just 2 weeks. “ (quote from study) Interestingly, the study near the bottom of the long detailed article said that a mixture of vitamin c and tretinoin showed even greater benefits. Here is the quote: “Finally, the authors concluded that repeated topical application of a preparation containing both retinol and vitamin C could reverse, at least in part, skin changes induced by both chronological and photoaging.” Unfortunately, I don’t know who manufactures that sort of treatment.

If it’s of any interest to you, would you possibly cover Ivan Galanin’s claims that his cream, Adipeau, is able to reach and restore the facial fat by trickling down the facial hair follicles? He says the hair follicles allow his cream to get past the stratum corneum barrier, provided the cream is not rubbed in, but rather left on skin in a thick layer. Many of us would like to restore facial fat and would be interested in this if it possibly works. But I have major doubts that the hair follicles are the key for topicals to reach the dermis and subcutaneous tissues. Thank you for everything you do to inform us! I’ve learned so much from you!

There was discussion once on a forum about retinoids & fat loss & someone wrote this. What do you make of it? "Retinoic acid affects the PPAR gamma receptor which is responsible for producing PVAT (peri vascular adipose tissue). This is because the retinoid receptor forms a heterodimer with PPAR gamma on DNA. It essentially stops that receptor from producing adipose fat, which is different than visceral fat. You should research how retinoic acid interacts with PPAR gamma, how PPAR gamma functions"

There is another video of him talking about facial fat volume loss (again, to promote his cream) with statements about what causes facial fat loss, like intensity training or dynamic movement of the face with no actual studies to back up what he said. The bottom line is, what any good his fat-restoring cream does (if it works) if your skin cannot hold tight because of the lack of collagen?... On the other hand, Tretinoin is clearly promoting collagen production in the skin.

I'm 32 now and I look 22 (if I wear makeup lol). I will be honest and say that most of my youthfulness is genetic as my entire material side look incredibly young and don't get gray hairs! However, tretinoin definitely has helped my skin and right now it is glowing. Fake news from those "excepts". Thanks Dr. Dray!

What makeup do you use to look younger? Usually I hear makeup makes people look older, so I'm hesitate to use it for that reason

@@Dunstlookalike 😅 No, makeup nakes me look older too. I was saying that most people assume I'm under 21 on a regular everyday basis so to look over 21 (e.g. 22) and limit the risk of being carded make up on tends to help. As for your hesitancy, I wouldn't be concerned. Makeup doesn't add things like wrinkles that don't exist. I have very typical baby faced features, so the makeup in my case sometimes adds definition to certain features, taking me over the edge!

I'm 32 and have never used retin-a and still look 20. Never wear sunscreen but I don't go out in sun much

I did see the featured video discussion earlier, and found it a bit confusing. I'm so happy that Dr. Dray made a reaction video like this. This is the kind of content that makes me respect her personality and her professionalism.

You go Dr Dray! As a Tretinoin .05% user for 6 yrs, thank you for providing the established human scientific information on it & pointing out the non truths he was espousing about it. Geez!

Thank you so much Dr. Dray for your response to this video! I had previously viewed this video and did not trust what he was saying since Tretinoin has worked so well for me. Also, please be aware he is selling a face cream called Adipeau.

I'm always skeptical of people who try to talk really fast to convince people of their prowess and knowledge. Thanks for fact checking this dude.

Dr Dray, you’re so well spoken and educated. Your ability to correct faulty statements is so impressive. You are such a baddie! I’m simping 🤣
