Dreadball 2nd Edition Review

Very nice review Andy :-) The best way to get to know your players is to paint them as, like you rightfully pointed out, they look quite similar. The easiest one to spot is the Guard as he lacks a DreadBall glove so that one's out of the way. This leaves just the Jack and the Striker, usually the former is more heavily armoured but the team cards have pictures if each type to help you distinguish them further. Once you know them you can tell them apart from a distance in a crowded bar so to speak ;-) The set of 6 hexagonal inserts you've tried to slot your players in are for the coloured trackes you get with Ultimate, the between 3 and 6 players version of the regular one which comes with it's own set of cards. In the end it doesn't really matter how you arrange your box as longs as you're happy with it. Hope this helps.

Thanks Patrick. Really appreciate the feedback. Yeah there’s not a huge difference between the sculpts but there is a difference once you know what you’re looking for. The box insert I realised late last night when I saw what you got in the Xtreme expansion. Those hex score trackers all fit in the top of the tray. It’s a great idea but just looks random without that knowledge. As I said it makes no bearing on the game - which is great 👍🏼

Great review, I had been eyballing this game for sometime, but hadn't heard any reviews about it. I was a Blood Bowl from it's first inception, but this Dread Ball reboot had intrigued me. Now I'm confident that I'll be purchasing this game. Thanks!

I bought into the original Dreadball quite a bit and still there are many aspects I enjoy and appreciate about it over Blood Bowl. I think I have 6 teams. I was totally unaware of the existence of this second edition until now however. Like the new board, but not crazy about the sculpts of these two core teams. Great review!

Hi. Love DB 2.0. Great update from 1.0. The inevitable comparison goes to BB which also like but DB offers a much wider scope of play typically. However….. sculpts wise and looks wise generally I think most would argue BB has the edge. Mantics have really gone full tilt with DEADZONE and those lines which are more hobbyist requiring building of sculpts and improving their look. I would love to see a refresh of DB, pretty much same rules as 2.0 but go down the hobbyist line. These games are something of a niche within a niche and modern board games now generally are looking great and they need to shine. Anyway, long live Dreadball. It’s great and deserves more love.

I agree with you. I wish the DB sculpts we’re a little bigger and better quality but the gameplay is fantastic.

35euro on Amazon, this might be a good time to get a copy. On the other side, I never understood why Mantic didn't released a Fantasy version of this. Game system is so much better than GW BB.

Great review Andy. As an old Blood Bowl player, I would have to compare them, maybe also Guild ball. I'm not much of a modder but wonder how easy it would be to magnetise the bases and ball? Sounds like a good plan. As for the glued base, a bit of masking tape while painting shouldn't be too difficult. All in all, certainly will be putting this in the list for our club. Is there a rrp?

Hey Mark, I think Guildball is more of a skirmish game that just happens to have a ball! Masking tape is a good shout. The only worry is you can see some of the mini inside the base. Worth a try though. I think it’s £59.99 rrp but I’ve seen it on other sites for about £48.

It had an update last year (with the Magnetar Circuit book) which rebalanced the stats but as for new teams it’s already pretty well covered so it’s not a game that needs new stuff all the time.

This more like Blitzbowl or Bloodbowl? I have Blitzbowl because I thought Bloodbowl is too conplicated and too timeconsuming to play. That said, should I try this instead?

I personally don't muckiest enjoy Bloodbowl as I find it quite complex too. This is much more straight forward and fast paced. I've not played Blitzbowl to compare it however but you won't be sorry if you give this a try.

It' not too bad at all. I found the hardest bit was identifying players on the pitch so i painted the bases different colours.

I own the first ed. Can i still use my 4 teams and mvp's?....and should i get the 2nd ed. If i already own the 1st? I just have the base game.. no other season books. Great review😎

Thanks Sylvain. You can definitely still use your 1st ed teams. I think there’s a package you can buy to upgrade your 1st ed board to the 2nd ed with cards, tokens and rules so that’s one option but I would say the 2nd edition box is nice enough to warrant picking up.
