Happy Birthday! Very enjoyable haul and good for you! I’m pretty sure I’m older than you. I want you to know that someday soon you will have a magical birthday and when that happens the thought of having to explain yourself will elicit an internal “oh, hell no”. And you will experience such a newfound freedom. Even if you weren’t a professional artist you never have to answer to anyone online. If anyone has any issues with anything you do that’s a ‘their’ problem. Don’t give your power away. You’re incredibly kind, knowledgeable, patient and giving. Everyone who comes here should be grateful. If not, they should move on. Carefully climbing down off my soapbox so I don’t break a hip and celebrating you! 🥳🫶🏻🥂🎨🖌️

Happy Birthday! Happy for you that you got new art supplies. I bought a Pitt Graphite Matt a few months ago, not knowing what was a fuss about matt graphite pencils. And I was blown away. Amount of times I wished that something like this would exist was countless. And I didn't know that it does exist. Also, completely random. I'm making pumpkin pie while watching this in the middle of December, because I still miss autumn. 🙂

I haven't bought Blackwings, but I love the weight and feel of the Staedtler Wopex. They are really inexpensive, but they have the right feel for me. They are recycled product I believe. And a bright green easy to pick out colour barrel. I think the recycled material has more give because the leads don't break that easily. In Canada the pencils can be bought at less than five dollars for a pack of twelve.

I find how a pencil feels in your hand to be just as important as how it performs. My last pencil work was an 11 x 14 on 16 x 20 paper. It was all done with the Blackwing 602. I started my art path doing graphite only for years and finding the Blackwing was like I struck gold! I had no idea there was a matte version. I totally would have gone for that for sure! But I do like the Pitt as well. I've gone through tons of brands and nothing has the range of the Blackwing, imho. But that's why there are a gazillion types and brands out there because we are all different. And as to the quin magenta, I am exactly the same. Every single palette I use and every single paint type I have, the quin magenta is a must have. OMG, drooling over the Holbein gouache sets. Someday.... lol Fun art haul!
@winterwoodsstudioАй бұрын
It really does make a difference doesn't it? I also find I'm more inclined to sketch ar night when hanging out with my family in the livingroom. I've been keeping one blackwing and a sketchbook in there and it's so much easier to pick up one pencil and have a range of values instead if having to have whole tin of pencils. It's simpler and I don't have to worry about knocking them all over!Glad you enjoyed the video, Tracie! Hope you are having a nice weekend!

Something I read regarding ‘artist’ vs ‘designer’ gouache - artist gouache has higher percent of lightfast colors than designer gouache. Designer gouache less concerned about lightfastness as it is expected the art will be scanned etc. This does not imply that ‘designer’ gouache lines aren’t lightfast, but they may also have vivid non lightfast colors that would be good for illustrations.

I highly recommend if you're getting into holbein gouache (or their paint in general) to look into some sort of third party company to buy it direct for you from japan since its so much cheaper (I personally have had no issues with zen shipping paint over to Canada) You can also get lightly used supplies that way for an even bigger save. (I have spent waaay too much money on the latter) I love the irodori gouache line a bunch!! Its a shame they no longer do the irodori watercolor since I heard that was really nice too. Also happy birthday!

Is holbein gouache more lightfast than wn?
@winterwoodsstudioАй бұрын
They both have paints that are lightfast and ones that are not. You need to look at their charts and pick out the ones that are lightfast if you want lightfast paints. I will say that Winsor and newton have a bunch of colors where the will call the like "Winsor Yellow" or "Winsor Blue." They won't tell anyone what pigments they used and claim it is a proprietary blend. and you have to just trust them on the lightfastness, except I've heard they aren't as lightfast as they claim. And I don't like that. so... it is what it is I guess. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Happy Birthday! I am in the market for some good info on stretched canvases and cradle boards and canvas boards. Budget friendly items and are they appropriate for selling. canvas weight and different types of wood....what to look for. Reputable brands...etc what does it all mean? perhaps a video?
@winterwoodsstudioАй бұрын
Canvas board are hard because so many of them warp. The best canvas boards for a decent price are the blick studio ones. They are the only cheaper ones I use. If you want to upgrade to something a little nicer, I recommend the ampersand gessobord. For stretched canvas that is cheaper but still nice enough to sell, the blick studio is good. The blick premier is professional level and still doesn't break the bank. Sometime I have some luck with the stretched canvases at Walmart with the blue label, not the pink, but you have to pick through and make sure the stretchers aren't warped, dented or otherwise damaged. But the cheap price is worth the time. Don't bother with their canvas panels though. They are garbage. Hope that helps!

I want to say this is a genuine comment from a good place, but understand even if that's able to translate across a typed thought from a stranger that it not be something welcome or helpful, or if it's offensive. If so, I do apologise for over-stepping, and/or upsetting you. I might be making a connection that isn't valid, or not relevant to your experience, but it seemed to me that maybe some of the comments about your purchasing habits you mentioned may be made with good intentions/trying to give back to you as you mentor/guide so many artists. I say this because you make an observation still in your intro that after reading the book you mention, you reflected that you may have some purchasing habits which are perhaps causing more stress and regret than joy? I am sorry if I'm way off, and the comments are mean-spirited, but I know I have some people in my life (and in internet connections) that make comments to me which may flare some defensiveness in me, but are sometimes not only meant as an act of care, but are also worth my reflection. You know best, but just wanted to mention incase maybe there were some people reaching out to you who were trying to do a Friend Good Deed, and it was maybe missed because you're understandably used to having to defend/protect from mean-spirited comments. ❤
