the producers wanted to boys to quit school and focus solely on their boy band. Also, it was discovered that one of the producers was involved in pornography. Therefore, the parents of the boys sued to remove the band from its producers. Dream Street won the lawsuit but as part of the settlement, the boys were never allowed to perform as group together again.

out of the boy bands during that era, dream street was theatrical compared to the others. bsb was more contemporary while nsync was more towards pop.

If Dream Street managed to escape the clutches of their brash managers, which led to their breakup, the group could've gotten picked up by Disney Channel. I don't think their success would've eclipsed BSB and NSYNC, but they would've had success similar to the Jonas Brothers (who broke out 5 years later). At the time, Disney was experimenting their teenage stars as both actors and singers (with Hilary Duff and Raven) to help revive Hollywood Records. This song was played on Radio Disney and the group knew Christy Romano from their Broadway years. This could've gave Dream Street a new path, and it helped Jesse kick off his solo career. Even Greg and Matt recorded a few songs for them after the breakup. Disney and Hollywood Records later used this formula with Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers. For Dream Street, the networking and opportunity was there.
