Thanks for uploading. Interesting you can already hear some of the damage to James' voice in Apr 1993. Doing this song night after night was incredible but did a tonne of irreversable damage sadly. James will always be my fav singer and imho the best metal singer of all time but he should have been managed better!

On December 30, 1994, while vacationing in Cuba, LaBrie was stricken with a severe case of food poisoning from contaminated pork and while vomiting, he ruptured his vocal cords.

IMO DT would never have attained the success they have seen thus far without JLB. How did his voice last as long as it did doing this night after night?? WOW
@burakverid6469 жыл бұрын
Craig Small It didn't last, that distortion in high pitchs was uncontrolled natural distortion which is harmful. I believe he pushed his voice so hard in many old concerts, for example Marque, that he started to lose his voice. I believe food poisoning is fictitious, false, those screams are the reason of damage in his voice.
@burakverid6469 жыл бұрын
Robo9400 So please tell me, why he is not using this tecnique anymore? Why his distorted voice sounds far more different nowadays? I give you a very simple example, if you scream as loud as possible in a footbal match, your voice sounds different afterwards, uncontrollably distorted . Because you pushed your vocal chords above its limit and damaged them temporarily. Now listen this video from 5:55 to 6.01(especially 5.59), what do you hear? It is not singing out of tone; it is the same thing you expreience after that footboll match, voice coming from abused vocal chords, naturally distorted, which is not good. If you have a "educated" singer friend, go make him listen this song, you will see the pain in his face =) BTW, hell yeah, he sounds far more better in old live shows =)

@@burakverid646 The food poisoning incident actually happened evidence is in the early 1995 shows where his voice is significantly worse than it was late 1994. Listen to metropolis and another day in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6ipq2ampKeLZtU
@Heitz24964 жыл бұрын
@@DTBootlegs In all honesty the distortion only dug him a deeper hole. The reason he did it after the incident was it was the only way for him to hit the note. You can scream a lot higher than you can sing. Stratovarius's lead singer Timo Tolkki could scream way higher than he actually sang. But the biggest evidence of James using screaming to hit notes was learning to live during any show for the Images anniversary tour. He would literally scream to get that list push up there and he was still short.

If you actually listen to all the bootlegs, his voice was already partially damaged at the end of the I&W tour. Clearly the food poisoning had a serious effect but I dont think that is the whole story. Yea, the food poisoning might have accelerated things, but the harsh truth is that this singing style and the touring live style just isn't sustainable over a long period of time. It will wear down every voice. The people who can do it for 30+ years are exceptions to the rule and even they will run out of steam at some point. Still love the music, but it's very demanding of the singers. It's like extreme sports and too many people just don't get it
@davidepannone60214 жыл бұрын
The real problem with food poisoning is that they kept going. If they would have let james rest an adequate time im not saying that nowadays he'd still sing like this, but it would have preserved a bit more. Then as the guy above me said, james never trained formally, so he was simply using his innate talent and scream at the top of his lungs. That's not how you sing. Well not per se, cuz he could clearly sing. That's not how you preserve your voice. Plus dream theater crazy album tour album tour didn't help over the years neither. Im actually amazed that he actually recovered after the train of thought tours, cuz he was embarrassing back then. Now he went back singing decently, having some nights off only.

I actually prefer the 1992 version of this thats floating around on youtube. I dont know if its from damage or he's doing it purposely, but the sandpaper on almost every note kind of ruins this one for me. Its not necessary, and to my ears, only really sounds good when he's belting out those high notes. And even then, i think they sound better slightly cleaner than they are here. The thing that gets me is that doing it like that would have sped up the damage to his vocals. Christ
@ian26 жыл бұрын
yeah, it was probably damage. the "sandpaper" thing you mention got a little worse from early to late 93. i think ultimately belting it the way he did night after night led to the major damage he got in the "food poisoning incident".
