Hello guys, I’m a professional sound engineer. I see a lot of speculation regarding mm cymbal placement. This is actually a somewhat common technique but it is usually made in the studio. The reason is to reject the cymbal noise spill from the Tom and snare mics and vice versa. If you see the video, the cymbal microphones are actually pointing upwards, this is because the pattern of the microphone are most likely cardioid, this means that they reject the sound from the back (wher the cable connects). I guess it’s pretty unusual to use this set up in a live scenario. Usually drummers find it very uncomfortable, but if mike mangini is comfortable playing like this, why not do it? As a live sound mixer you should always aim for the highest quality sound you possibly can. Cheers.

This is a great example of how unique and different every drummer is and while Mike M. is playing the parts perfectly, it doesn't have that Portnoy flair and feel. When he is playing his own original material, MM is an unstoppable force. I just don't care for him playing Portnoy's stuff.

Age probably plays a factor too. He is 57 now. His lung capacity isn't going to be the same as it was when they first wrote this song when he was 39/40.

I'm sorry. I love this band unconditionally, but LaBrie is, hear me out, washed up. DT needs to get an Arnel Pineda (Journey) in there. James can record amazing vocals, but live, he sounds like a drunk guy at a karaoke bar.

Well, these lyrics are who they aimed at when they wrote them, then. Sorry, but you can't like Dream Theater and not like LaBrie. He's perfect for Dream Theater. These musicians are so damn perfect that they don't need a pretentious vocalist stealing the spotlight. He's just there to add some human sound to the amazing sound these guys produce. I love his melodic and dramatic voice in contrast to their instruments. Also, this recording is sh!t. I've heard them live twice in the last 4 years and LaBrie sounded amazing!

How is it sad? They're getting old now. Rudess is 64, LaBrie and Mangini are 57, Myung and Petrucci are 53. All bands start to lose some of what made them great the older they get. Stop judging them and how they were performing 20 years ago, this is why all you dweebs come away disappointed, you're comparing a band from its performances in the 90s/early 00s to now, without taking into consideration that these lads are HUMAN. They're not machines like you like to think they are. We should count our lucky stars that they're still around after 30+ years, touring and releasing new music. Be grateful for that instead of being a little bitch because they're not as youthful and energetic as they were when they were in their 30s......
