This is the first of 5 songs in Mike Portnoy's 12 Step Suite which deals with the 12 steps in Alcoholics Anonymous, which he had gone through just a few years prior. The Glass Prison This Dying Soul The Root Of All Evil Repentance The Shattered Fortress All are from different albums but they continue the suite and often feature some similar melodies between each other to connect it all together. I'd highly recommend listening to the rest of the suite!

Ah yes! In case no one explained. This is the first song of several consecutive songs called the 12 Step Suite. The original drummer, Mike Portnoy, suffered from alcoholism and these songs are about his personal experience with it in going through the 12 step program. POWERUL emotional stuff and insanely top notch musicianship! The songs are .. The Mirror The Glass Prison This Dying Soul The Root of All Evil Repentance The Shattered Fortress.

I've seen Dream Theater about 20 times since 1993. I met the band three times. Every single time it was an out of body experience!!

I became a fan in 2000! Seen them live 13 times. Love all of their work with both drummers, and yes, every show is out of body! Saw them in Austin a few months ago first time since the pandemic. That was special getting to see Count of Tuscany live for my first time!
@alanalanis22572 жыл бұрын
@@Psyggie Actually, I saw them for the last time in Austin back in 2019. I just don't want to take a chance with covid. I was sad that I wouldn't be seeing them because I would always see them when they come to Austin and San Antonio.

My favorite dream theater song, pure raw power start to finish
@kevinhummel690127 күн бұрын
Pure, raw power on all levels. The fact that you can tune into any of the 5 of them and take something moving out it is the best part. The lyrics are inspirational. One of my 3 favorite DT songs(along with Scarred and ACOS).

Yeah, this song is a great example of the fact that while DT has a lot of prog influences, they are also fundamentally a metal band. Petrucci used his 7 string on this one for extra beefiness!

Welcome to the world of Dream Theater. I’ve been a fan since the start. A speechless reaction is perfect. Illumination Theory should be next in my opinion. When you were reacting and suddenly you realized that they pulled you in….. Um that’s DT

You're asking how they create stuff like this? Easy. Each one of the instrumentalists in the band are world class players (and world class musicians as well) and they spend their days practicing their instruments and experimenting with a shit load of different concepts (on an instrumental, compositional and production level). Then they get together and sum all those skills and concepts. That creates all the freaky shit you hear (which after some time becomes less and less freaky, because of habit).

I don't know if you've done it at this point, but I would love it if you reacted to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. It's one of my favorite pieces of music ever. Edit: after a second listen, yes, this song is from the album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. It's a two disc album, and the second disc of the album is the concept half of the album, and where the the namesake comes from. It's eight songs, but one complete piece of music, and lasts 42 minutes. I can't praise it enough, and I hope you check it out.
