Hell yes! This is a great Dream Theatre song! Sometimes yes they do go a little overboard with technicalities, but, that's what prog metal is. Why tap a million note sequence in 1 measure? Because you can.

John Petrucci (guitarist) who wrote the lyrics has said it's about the cults that go too far and the 40 sons and daughters is related to the cult in Japan that did some VERY insane acts. The song just calls attention to cults and those turning towards the mainstream light. Some cults will use holy religious books in twisted ways and then it manifests itself in murder of others or self (mass suicides). It's a warning to beware of false prophets making claims. Petrucci is also a Catholic by the way. DT are a great band that have some bad songs over the 30 years they've been going but don't write them off too soon.

I'm so happy to see you guys are enjoying them now. I think you would love the food for thought (and ears) that is their 23 mins masterpiece "A Change of Seasons". The ex-drummer and co-founder of the band, Mike Portnoy wrote it about the loss of his mother at a very young age. She tragically died in a plane crash. It's absolutely brilliant songwriting. It doesn't get any better than this.

Woohoo! thank you to your patreon for making this one possible! Dream theater is hands down one of my favorite bands. This song's lyrics were written by the guitarist, John Petrucci. He pens a lot of lyrics for DT, but to me his best lyrics always come from his introspection into his own faith (catholic, I think). Another song like that is Voices, which is one of my favorites. Glad you may be coming around for DT. Funny enough, the first song you reacted to by them, Wither, the lyrics were also written by Petrucci lol. So there's some hits and occasional misses lol

Brilliant reaction. Great discussion. Some of DT's songs are so sincere in their lyrics it induces genuine contemplation and discussion. Some topics are really very complex for a person to have clear views on. It is normal to not know what is right always. Just be humble about it and try to meditate upon it. Songs like these help. Shout out to whoever suggested this song! Brilliant.

@@FanaticDrummer I love Portnoy's little fucks that he puts in his drum patterns, like the thing he does at 4:28, like changing the tempo and time signature. Im not sure that is a entirely different time signature though, if someone who is good at time and tempo stuff (im a beginner in musictheory) could explain it better that would be cool as hell.

As a progressive rock and metal fan watching how you are starting to dig this stuff and the long epics... Try Neal Morse, I would like to see your reaction to that. He is one of the active grands of the genre, Mike Portnoy the great drummer and ex dream theater driving force is involved in Neal Morse Albums and I love the music. Oh yeah, Neal is a very faithful Cristian, ALL his solo stuff is about God, that's why he left other bands inially in the early 2000s to focus on music about God. Try him out, please, my favorite is the Sola Scriptura Album, which is about Martin Lutter.

It makes me very happy you guys did this song. Very nice discussion afterward, too. I know a lot of people shy away from religion discussions, but I love them. This song can probably find relation to several events, but it is Waco, TX which this song specifically refers to. The members of Dream Theater are majority Christians, and there are several songs with religious themes. "Blind Faith" is a fun one, because James points out that we tend to project a purpose for God, and that we should do things for ourselves, rather than (falsely) expect God to do things for us. You guys might enjoy that one :)

One of the best modern Dream Theater songs. This whole album was incredible in fact. One of their top 2 or 3 albums. I had wondered if you guys would catch the Battle Hymn of the Republic at the end, and you did! I love the indian/middle eastern inspired solo section and the harmonized guitar/keyboard run to close out the solo. Sadly poor Sori saying you guys are caught up is totally wrong. You skipped one patron song entirely (possibly a copyright block issue) and still have one more to do after this one in order to stay even for the week. I honestly thought you would hate this song, I am glad I was wrong. I can't remember if I was the one that put this up in the EU, but I definitely voted hard for it. This was the last song voted in from the EU before some of us split off to form the XU. You all are nuts if you think Karesh didn't need to be taken out. That guy was a seriously evil dude. The government overstepped, true that, but that guy was as vile as they come. Its kinda scary that you can't see that. You can definitely have a discussion about if the government going in when they did resulted in innocent deaths that may have been averted. But the evidence just doesn't seem to support that. Historically or otherwise. Thats why cults are so incredibly dangerous. I think the once proud religion turning toward the mainstream light is supposed to be Islam. Its important to remember that Dream Theater is based out of New York and this was the first real album they did post 9/11. (Six Degrees they had just entered the studio when this all happened, so writing was already in process for that one). I think each stanza in that section is talking about a different religion or faith (mormon, christianity, islam etc). With the idea being that all religions seem to justify violence with their faith. Which runs counter to what those various religions are actually supposed to be espousing. China's religion official endorsed by the state is atheism (ie state atheism) but Buddhisim, Confucianism and Taoism are officially recognized and common. Good luck finding numbers on what the population actually follows in terms of religious faith. Worth noting to that as far as I know Portnoy and Petrucci (who write most of the songs) are both religious. Portnoy is catholic I am 95% sure and Petrucci is christian. But I think as is often the case in music, it provides an outlet for these guys to question things. It doesn't mean they aren't still believers. It just means they are unsure or have doubts, which is incredibly normal I think. You were doing so well until the 43rd minute where you had to shoehorn in Original Sin to explain away faith based violence. Which absolutely does happen in christianity and in EVERY major religion. Think about it this way. if people weren't fighting for religion the likelihood of your average person killing for say, "love of James Hetfield" is pretty small. Religion is such a deeply personal thing to everyone that it inspired incredible passion within people. And that passion can very very easily be directed to violence. Even with good people. And that is why the original sin concept is used as a crutch here. Its Vin's explanation for everything. We were talking about this on discord and as much as it would be nice to sit down and talk to you about original sin for a couple of hours. Neither of us will likely change the others mind. And if I did change your mind, as someone in discord brought up, it would shatter the foundation of your beliefs. And I don't know that I want to be responsible for that. If the idea that we are all bad and irredeemable works for you, thats good! Life is hard enough, if it gets your through the day to believe that all the bad shit people do is because we are all bad and some people manage to somehow rise above that, I think thats a great thing. But, when I get called our on not buying in to original sin,. like its the most obvious thing that I should be believing in....well I find it hard not to respond.

Petrucci's fucking solos in this son is fucking AMAZING... And its not just that its "super-sweet metal shredding" awesomeness... there's a ton of metal guitarists out there who can shred it up... but Petrucci really raised the bar to a whole new level when he took it to those avant-garde extremes that really make those solos SO damn unique and interesting to listening to and just all-around exciting. Plus I love how he uses the Phrygian Mode to give it that "middle eastern" scale vibe that thematically goes with the motif of the song, since its about "killing in the name of God", and that concept goes hand-in-hand with the conflicts between the world's major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the middle-eastern region in general. Not only does he use that Mode and that sonic motif very well within the context of this song, but he also doesn't confine himself into that concept and turn it into something cheesy and hokey, and knows when to break away from that and go into something really out-there, and avant-garde and creative. Love the solo work in this fucking song.

The thing with prog, it's a bit like what you went through with Halford. At first you're like "WTF, calm down dude" and then once the "shock" of it wears off it begins to grow on you and you hear different things in the song that you missed before and appreciate it on multiple levels. At least for me, for many people that never happens and it's fine. HOpefully next song you do from them is one of their older ones like Trial of Tears, Voices or Scarred.

You could say, that man's inability to handle power is a fundamental flaw in what is to be human. Quoth Abraham Lincoln, "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." The concept of religion is a powerful thing. Man's ability to handle it is sad at best. Man is his best, worst enemy. Loved this reaction vid guys.

I hope you listening to the images and words album and the Awake album because what I'm finding on KZbin is that people don't know about these albums. You know how a member leaves and then the group changes and it's not quite as good. That's what happened so I'm just suggesting you try those two albums out I think you'll be blown away.

I hate that I'm struggling financially right now because God I want to make a Patreon request in the epic underground for a band Redemption, specifically their song The Fullness of Time. The lyrics are so deep, you would truly find alot if meaning in it and the story it crafts but it's around the 20 min range so the only way that's happening is when I can patreon you guys lol but things are turning around so hopefully I'll be able to soon. Thank you two again for your videos, I love how in depth you go into music and really break down the lyrics. Thank you.

So true, if a member of a church suffers a financial loss, they tend to treat you like a loser but tell you that they are praying for you instead of giving you their shirt and coat.

Given specifically what you're looking for and aspects, this would have been one of my few Dream Theater recommendations, and nice for such to be acknowledged as basically "10", which might extend to what I've seen others mention, such as Count of Tuscany, Change of Seasons, and Shattered Fortress, with many works similar and greater in length. (Change of Seasons 23 minutes). But the origin and inspiration should be sought to understand the work as well, applicable to the latter 2 much more than other work. DT has quite a wide variety available in their entire catalog, and as someone who has seen them in every version every chance for many years, notable is live they are note for note, and a true experience of "musical/technical expertise/acrobatics". Given the above review, Count of Tuscany probably most well received out of all the above.Backstory required for the other 2 (Change of Seasons/Shattered Fortress) as inspired from deeply personal Portnoy life experiences.

Ok, so here's the deets about DT: Their first keyboard player (Kevin Moore) was heavily influential in their initial sound. Their second (Derek Sherinian) was good but the loss of Moore changed their sound. For better or worse. Sherinian comes from the Dixie Dregs which is ANOTHER band that is worth a Google! Moore went on to do some VERY cool stuff. Such as: Chroma Key - Dead Air For Radios: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn-tlpdjlLmSors and OSI - Office of Strategic Influence: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ-YXqZ5gt-BiLM You can hear Moore touch on the ChromaKey concept in the Dream Theater song "Space Dye Vest" from the Awake album. OSI features Portnoy (THE DT drummer, come @ me!) and Jim Matheos (guitarist from Fates Warning, another Google-worthy ProgMetal band). The talent that spins in the DT universe is pretty legit.

The song was partly dedicated to the events with the cult known as Heaven's Gate, their leader convinced them that they needed to to die and hitch on a ride on a passing comet to get to "heaven". Tragic... my church has a weekly radio program called Cultish you should check out.
