Lyrics
I. REFLECTION
Cunning, Baffling, Powerful
Been beaten to a pulp
Vigorous, Irresistable
Sick and tired and laid low
Dominating, Invincible
Black-out, loss of control
Overwhelming, Unquenchable
I'm powerless, have to let go
I can't escape it
It leaves me frail and worn
Can no longer take it
Senses tattered and torn
Hopeless surrender
Obsession's got me beat
Losing the will to live
Admitting complete defeat
Fatal Descent
Spinning around
I've gone too far
To turn back round
Desperate attempt
Stop the progression
At any length
Lift this obsession
Crawling to my glass prison
A place where no one knows
My secret lonely world begins
So much safer here
A place where I can go
To forget about my daily sins
Life here in my glass prison
A place I once called home
Fall in nocturnal bliss again
Chasing a long lost friend
I no longer can control
Just waiting for this hopelessness to end
II. RESTORATION
Run - fast from the wreckage of the past
A shattered glass prison wall behind me
Fight - past walking through the ashes
A distant oasis before me
Cry - desperate crawling on my knees
Begging God to please stop the insanity
Help me - I'm trying to believe
Stop wallowing in my self pity
"We've been waiting for you my friend
The writing's been on the wall
All it takes is a little faith
You know you're the same as us all"
Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone
Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own
Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone
Enter the door
Desperate
Fighting no more
Help me restore
To my sanity
At this temple of hope
I need to learn
Teach me how
Sorrow to burn
Help me return
To humanity
I'll be fearless and thorough
To enter this temple of hope
Believe
Transcend the pain
Living the life
Humility
Opened my eyes
This new odyssey
Of rigorous honesty
Serenity
That I never knew
Soundness of mind
Helped me to find
Courage to change
All the things that I can
"We'll help you perform this miracle
But you must set your past free
You dug the hole, but you can't bury your soul
Open your mind and you'll see"
Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone
Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own
Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone
III. REVELATION
Way off in the distance I saw a door
I tried to open
I tried forcing with all of my will but still
The door wouldn't open
Unable to trust in my faith
I turned and walked away
I looked around, felt a chill in the air
Took my will and turned it over
The glass prison which once held me is gone
A long lost fortress
Armed only with liberty
And the key of my willingness
Fell down on my knees and prayed
"Thy will be done"
I turned around, saw a light shining through
The door was wide open

I do not know what happened to my comment I wrote here earlier. Here goes again. This was my first Dream Theater release. I bought this in 2002 upon release. I was extremely happy to find this band. A friend from the vcr/dvd video store blockbuster remember them recommended them. I had already been into progressive rock and progressive metal such as Queensryche, Fates Warning and Tool. Also prot progressive metal such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and such. Dream Theater raised the bar. They helped usher in a whole new era of prog. Finally progressive and metal were formally fused. I quickly bought their back catalog with Metropolis part 2, A Change of Seasons and this being my favorites. This combined cinematic with progressive with technical with metal in a way I only dreamed of before. Fates Warning A Pleasant Shade of Grey is a favorite of mine yet that cinematic side is missing. Also the symphonic side. James Labrie really shines on this and the previous release. Jordan Rudess was a fine addition making a big difference starting with Metropolis part 2. The lyrics on The Great Debate etc. made a lot of sense and still do. They dealt with very controversial science and moral issues still prevalent. For example, The Great Debate spoke of stem cells and cloning. This is just as serious an issue today. Cloning leads to all kinds of problems including genetic mutations. The vaccine for the Covid virus used a fetus that has been cloned for years to test it. I have to wonder how the virus started in the first place. This cloned fetus has been used for years in other vaccines and experiments. The virus could have started with an experiment that combined different viruses and used this fetus in testing or production. This most unethical and dangerous testing is ironically called “gain of life.” What a dumb name for tests that create death. Back to the music. Other than very real lyrics dealing with the real world the music is incredible. Dream Theater heralded a whole new progressive genre being progressive metal. The first 6 releases minus When Dream and Day Unite are 4 and 5 star releases. This and Metropolis part 2 being 5 star. They have not repeated the formula. That’s ok. We have these masterpieces.

I am not sober as of yet but this song describes getting drunk whilst craving alcohol in an addictive manner perfectly I had an extremely dodgy experience just a couple weeks ago that I barely remember, just that I was lost in one of the rougher areas of Glasgow, have kept it in moderation since due to how terrified I was the following day knowing this had happened alone.

While he hasn't compelled me to burn my guitars, I can honestly say I would sell my soul several times over if it would gain me anything resembling John Petrucci's abilities. And not only can he shred, he can also make his guitar sing beautifully when the situation calls for it.

The last verses are very good. I can relate to them way too much nowadays. Very impressive song, impressive lyrics, impressive melody, impressive singer and so much power in all of it! Way off in the distance I saw a door I tried to open I tried forcing with all of my will but still The door wouldn't open Unable to trust in my faith I turned and walked away I looked around, felt a chill in the air Took my will and turned it over The glass prison which once held me is now gone A long lost fortress Armed only with liberty And the key of my willingness Fell down on my knees and prayed "Thy will be done" I turned around, saw a light shining through The door was wide open
