@@dmusiclife5727 that's exactly what this song is. All the sections are excerpts from other songs from them. All from the 12-suite suite they did. The only thing that is original for this song is the lyrics and the keyboard and guitar solos basically.

Like the Godfather movies, this is really a band that you listen to the first couple times and hear a lot of different things. To understand this song and why there's so many different melodies you would have HAD to have listened to the previous songs in the AA suite of Mike Portnoy's (The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil and Repentance) from the previous 4 albums. That being said, the song stands well on its own anyway :) Great reaction guys!!

I believe you should listen to other DT songs. This one in particular is a mesh of several songs that have appeared in differente albums, with the idea of making with them a great suite, something like a symphony, with all those songs being each one somewhat like a single movement of the whole symphony. So it is as you have said: it sounds as a musical puzzle, because it IS so. So this is mostly a DT fans dish, not an informal listener to get into their music. I'd reccomend you to give a listen to something like In the Presence of Enemies Parts I and II, live. It's a mind blowing experience. Give this a listen, please.

This song is part 5 in a 5 song suite, 1 song from 5 different albums based on the 12 Steps of AA written by Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy who was an alcoholic. They were going to play the songs together, but never got the chance because Portnoy left after this album. He himself has performed the suite with a different singer and musicians. The songs are: The Glass Prison from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence; This Dying Soul from Train Of Thought; The Root Of All Evil from Octavarium; Repentance from Systematic Chaos; & The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

The thing with Dream Theater, and really Progressive music in general, is that listening to it once is almost never going to be the best experience of the song, because it can come off as overwhelming and hard to follow. That's why follow-up listens in time are very much recommended. It's like if you had to keep walking through a tall field of thick grass to and from work everyday; it's so much to get through and you feel the time and effort it takes to get through it, but each time you go through it, a path starts forming through the grass and you not only get through smoother but you start to admire the scenery around you. Multiple listens ca let you anticipate certain odd breakdowns better and expose to you some more hidden details in the music that you didn't hear before. This would all definitely be the case...except for this song. This is one of the worst track you could have picked for an early DT listen, not in the sense that it's a bad song, far from it actually, but because this song requires a whole lot of context from prior DT songs and albums. This is the last song in a 5-track suite based on drummer Mike Portnoy's (different drummer than the one in this video) struggles with Alcohol and his recovery through the 12 Step program in Alcoholics Anonymous. The song harkens back to all the previous songs in the suite, basically being like a mashup and remix of riffs, melodies and lyrics, with a handful of new ones. Had you listened to the previous 4 tracks before this one, you would have had a lot more context and satisfaction with the way they referenced all these pieces. Not only that, but EVERY song in the suite is a masterpiece in their own right! If you're interested in going through the 12 Step Suite, here is the running order (I'd recommend sticking with the studio versions because live versions tend to lean more to audience hype rather than the mood of the music). -The Mirror (1994) [Prequel to the suite, often still considered] -The Glass Prison (2002) -This Dying Soul (2003) -The Root Of All Evil (2005) -Repentance (2007) -The Shattered Fortress (2009)

The Count of Tuscany is a true masterpiece, I really recommend it. It’s more of a journey than a regular song :) Scene Four: Beyond This Life is also an extremely nice song, a bit heavier as well For more normal heavy metal, As I Am is a great choice, it goes real hard Side note, I think you would really like Death to all but metal - Steel Panther. It’s a normal heavy metal band, but very funny. Think Electric Callboy, but just heavy metal🤘🏼

Great video as always! If you're going to check Dream Theater live, the best experience was the Score Anniversary show. From there you could go a little crazy and do... Octavarium? And the reason there not together today is because Neil Peart Was Rush. He wrote all there music. The other two guys were lost without his guidance, and now we see that. Your girl there is smart. She was really engulfed when you guys played Shattered Fortress by Dream Theater. She was so pumped to hear them again, and then you stepped in and doubled down or Rush.
