Train of Thought is nasty from start to end. Rate it a 9.2 out of 10. Seen the band live 18 times. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is by far their best album (double album)

This Dying Soul is part 3 of Dream Theater's Alcoholics Anonymous suite. It is about Mike Portnoy's struggle with alcoholism. Part 1 is The Mirror/Lie from Awake, Part 2 is The Glass Prison from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Part 4 is The Root of All Evil from Octavarium, Part 5 is Repentance from Systematic Chaos, and Part 6 is The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds and Silver Linings. The whole suite is beyond EPIC!!

In the making of material I saw years ago about this LP,, they wrote most of the music together in a rehearsal space … the funniest part was when they finished, they looked at a calendar & realized they’d done it in about 3 weeks. I remember Portnoy commenting something to the effect of, ‘great, I can hear people now saying we didn’t spend enough time on it.’ Frankly, when I hear bands saying it took them months to write a 3 minute pop song with 6 chords total, I just think of that & laugh. 😂 Long time fan, but I’ve honestly seen them enough times that I just don’t need to anymore. Besides, I was at the show they shot the “Score” DVD at & I don’t think they’ll top that performance … but they are worth seeing live if you haven’t.

Because you like your research, the 12:55 riff is from “the glass prison”, which starts dealing with AA, written by Portnoy, where this track I believe is the second of the suite of the 12 step process. The final step is completed in Black clouds and silver linings, where there is a sense of closure lyrically and great musical reprises that rewards the listener who has experience from listening to the whole AA journey.

DT is my favorite band. Followed them closely from around 1998, my favorite song from them alternates between A Change Of Seasons and Octavarium. I have seen them live five times and they're incredible live.

Dude, I don't know id I can pick a favorite Dream Theater album. "Images and Words", "Awake", "Change of Seasons", "Train of Thought", "Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"... those are my top ones. LOL Fun Fact: On DT's album "Falling to Infinity" and the song "Lines in the Sand", they have a guest vocal from the amazing Doug Pinnick from King's X. You should give it a listen and then go for King's X - "We Were Born To Be Loved". It jams!

This band is beyond amazing in a live setting. I've seen them at least 20 times. Try Distance Over Time by Dream Theater. The songs are shorter with hard rocking riffs that you may find more accessible.

@@nedrini1387 I think it's phenomenal. I love it too, but Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought are still my favorite DT albums. I do think Mangini is a great drummer but there's something about the chemistry with Portnoy on those two albums. The energy is just so raw and intense and with more emotion. However, the new album is incredible in it's own right. No one comes close to DT!!

Amazing song, amazing album, 9/10. DT's my fav band, their discography is long and versatile and they really don't have a bad album. Each album is worth checking out but I'd say Train of Thought is definitely the heaviest out of them, although songs from other albums can match ToT's heaviness. Also I love how you do a little research before the reaction, its informative and its good to have some knowledge

I never thought about how that particular vocal line had the same rhythm as "BLACKENED IS THE EEEEND" from Metallica. It's my favorite Metallica song so that's awesome

The last albums from them seem like them covering themselves in comparison to what they could put together in Mike Portnoy

Mangini is a monster player but Portnoy really brought that heaviness and aggression that is missing now. Their new albums just leaves me flat and dissapointed.

Undeniably technically elite. I was "pulled under" back in the early days with Images and Words. Everyone goes to Pull Me Under, but Another Day and Take the Time were just delish as can be from that joint. Each musician just as good as it gets with their instruments.

I'm not a huge fan of this band but I enjoyed this and liked it much better than other material I've heard or know. It was certainly a rollercoaster ("hamster on a wheel" was a good description) and like several songs in one...most songs like that are usually too frenetic for me but this was well-executed. X Japan's Art of Life is another very few I can put in that category, and that song clocks in at a whopping 30 minutes. Just waiting for super fan Espi to hop in with his 2 cents now....
