Waking up in a hospital after a botched suicide I went home after a week of surgeries. This album was the first I listened to. Alone on the floor of my apartment this song dropped me to my knees. Realizing the life choices I had made to lead me to this dark place. This was 2012, I am now sober and a drug and alcohol counselor at a homeless shelter. Music is the most powerful force on Earth.

Love this video. Another heart wrenching Dream Theater ballad. I listened to the Wither EP today. It includes three versions: this one, a Rudess/LaBrie duet, and demo with John Petrucci singing lead vocals. JP has a really nice voice, but listening to this brings into such sharp focus just how beautifully sweet, clear and strong James' voice is. It is easy to overlook how great of a front man he is with a band full of virtuosos backing him.

Back in 2009/10 (my memory is fuzzy on it for some reason), I went to a concert in Washington, Maryland with my best friend and his mom. We got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for five minutes at the time, and this lasted an hour. When we got there, we met John Myung in the lobby of the hotel as he was on his way out to a meet and greet at Ernie Ball Music Shop. We managed to get there and decided for shits and giggles, to enter the raffle for two extra tickets. One of us won (I think it was my best friend), and we got to meet John Petrucci and Myung again. We were in the documentary video for the meet and greet (which I'd be surprised if it still existed to this day lmao). I'll remember this for as long as I live. I'll never get another experience like this again, and I'm happy that the one who introduced me to DT, who is also my partner in crime for life, was there to experience it with me.

I love Mike Portnoy and was sad to learn of his departure from DT. I wish him all the best....the man has a huge heart and is very generous live perfomer. He once handed me a drumstick at the end of a show only to have some a-hole snatch it, so Mike then hands me another one, makes sure I have it before letting go, I slid it down the front of my dress!!! I still have and covet that purple drumstick!! He is a sweetie!!!

In my opinion, I think this song is about how much pain and failure you can handle in life as you keep going back up. Basically it's vulnerability well handled over invulnerability well expressed. Let everything burn down as you start over and learn from previous mistakes. That's why this song is devastatingly sad but beautiful at the same time, like the keyboard and the guitar solo part.

It's been over a decade since I first heard this song and it still brings a tear to my eye. Everything from the lyrics, general mood, imagery... Beyond that, the fact that the iteration of DT we see in this video was slowly heading in different directions from each other makes everything about this so bittersweet. They really captured a beautiful moment with this track. This whole album did. I'm happy they're all still doing what they love and thriving in it. They really deserve it.

In general, this song tells about a person's helplessness in facing something that might make him have to try hard and fight for everything. But his efforts and hard work suddenly stopped because he failed to achieve it. If you look closely, the lyrics of this song actually reveal more about the story of the songwriter. Basically, there are three things that underlie me to conclude that there is a symbol of despair in this song, friends. The three things were: Surrender, Hope, and Sadness. These three things for me are global conditions that a person feels when he is desperate
@georges617 Жыл бұрын
I think John Petrucci, the guitarist, stated that this song is about writer's block, the condition when a writer goes through a severe creative slowdown and feels unable to produce new material, even though he possesses the necessary writing skills. This manifests with ordinary humans too. How often do you know what you want to express, only to then suddenly feel like you cannot even string a sentence together to properly formulate it? The hesitation, the helplessness, the lack of self-confidence... I see all of these elements in the lyrics. But I really like your analysis too. Great metaphor about life struggles and about when nothing ever seems to go your way. You think that you can never really climb out of the hole you're in, so why even bother trying? Really nice song by Dream Theater and certainly one of my favourites.
