"DreamBound: a Kirby RPG Prequel" is a pixel art fan game based on the untold tales which happened before Kirby's Dream Land.
You'll follow little Dedede and his friends on their journey to stop Dark Matter with the Dream power of the Star Rod! Its battle system is a mix between Mother 3 and Paper Mario.
This is actually just an animation, not a real game, but if you've been fooled by watching it, well, I'm glad the illusion worked!

Halfway past the game, the team is fighting the second portal which contains Dark Nebula. Lilili's not here because she was captured by the Desert bandits, so the fight is kind of tough without her powers.

I love how this seemingly harkens to the theory that meta knight and dedede had fought dark nebula in the past, as to explain why it was sealed in a chest that they both had in their possessions during kirby squeak squad. I think a kirby RPG would be perfect for telling a prequel story like that!

Thanks! This was the first idea that came to my mind when thinking about doing a prequel Other demos will follow, each of them explaining some origin stories of characters or the lore in general, even though it's only my interpretation, of course!

The five stages of grief after finding out this isn't actually a game: Denial: There's no way this is just an animation, look how fluid the gameplay is! Anger: How can it look so deceptively realistic? This is criminal! Bargaining: I'll contribute $200 to a kickstarter, just make this happen please! Depression: HAL will probably never make something like this, they're too focused on the platformer demographic... Acceptance: Though it may never be real, this sure is one amazing animation, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch it. :)

Thank you so much! Lilili is a main character of the game, although she does not appear in this first demo. Also, she's Dedede's big sister! In the story, Dark Nebula is separated into different parts of himself you'll fight numerous times. In Squeak Squad, Kirby fought only one part, that's why he was so weak (yeah I tried to justify why his boss fight was so easy heh)

@@OniriBoy That makes me think of dragon ball power scaling were a once really tough enemy just becomes a joke later down the line (by the time of squeak squad meta knight probably could have solo'ed dark nebula) also dark nebula is a great choice for a final rpg prequel boss with the elemental forms it has

Holy SMOKES the sprite work is impeccable, Dark Nebula and its Negative Beam are fantastically trippy and I love the little animation and sound flairs for the party members! I was honestly fooled at first that this was an actual game, there's clearly a lot of effort and love put into this and it's incredibly inspiring. :D

Wait I just realized, in Meta Knight's star menu, Galaxia was listed there. But then in games like Adventure, he doesn't have it. Maybe he lost it? Or maybe it belongs in a special place? The world could potentially know.

Good job for pointing that out! That may be an error to the canon, but in the GBA remake of Kirby's Adventure, Meta Knight has Galaxia in the artwork so I assumed he got it before. He would obtain Galaxia during DreamBound, but he would need enough training to become powerful enough to use it. At this moment of the game, he can use it rarely.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. The reference to past Nintendo rpgs like the Mother series with the use of the battle system/layout & the rolling health bar, and Dededee's hammer attack using the Paper Mario timing mechanic! Meta Knight's attack being reactionary like the samurai mini-game in Kirby Super Star and Bandana Dee's support move is such a smart idea???! It would have been nice to see some influence from Kirby's existing RPG (mode), Kirby Quest (in Kirby Mass Attack) but I suppose HAL were involved with Earthbound so the influence makes some sense. The battle commands and different techniques looked fun to pull off and witness. The way Dark Nebula eye looked around to each character looked great and the younger designs of each character looked ever so charming.

Thanks! Those Star moves at the bottom are special actions that doesn't cost SP but one star from the Star Rod on the right, which is shared by the party. Those moves are very powerful. For example, Meta Knight's one deals a lot of damage, burns and stuns the enemy!

Thank you! I imagined Meta Knight was originally pink like Kirby, but some unfortunate events in the game would turn him blue. His resemblance with Galacta Knight is also a major key point of the plot (Dedede's sister believes he's the legendary warrior and that he can help her and Dedede find Dream Land)
