Kind of is surprising this lil trilogy remaster wasn’t screwed up. I say that ‘cause of games like re3 remake, & XIII 13 remake, games that sucked in terms of modernizing them, capcom basically re invented resident evil 3 and retconned gravedigger; a giant bloodworm out of existence, it really cut so much of what made the original good. Capcom could’ve done better for re3, but they didn’t. XIII 13 remake has issues with audio not working right, and there are probably other problems. People thought it was so bad they bought the original copy on the ps2 I think. Not to mention some dead space remake dev on ign’s segment covering dead space remake with devs, one of them said “it’s a remake, we can’t break it.” it’s a false statement. I hope dead space remake is good and faithful to its original, I’ve recently gone back and played through it, real good game for 2008, I may be midway finishing dead space 2 and then completIng the whole series. Wish they’d outsource dead space ip to a more passionate and creative development team, just ‘cause Jedi fallen order and mass effect legendary edition were nice enough experiences doesn’t mean ea’s horrendous reputation is swept under the rug.

Although I totally agree that it sucks that they didn't include the extra content, I think their goal with the pixel remasters is to be as faithful to the originals as possible. The only problem with that is that they decided to make changes that make the games a lot more accessible and easier, so if they're not going to be faithful in that front, they probably should've just added the extra content as well.

Well, that sells it for me, I don't want them if they don't have the extra content. I played them all already, and I know FF3 didn't get that extra stuff, but I never got to try the extra stuff outside FF6 (because I'm a massive FF6 fanboy and have damn near every version made...).

For FF3 alone this is huge, for 1-2-4 just play the 2D psp versions, they are the definitive versions imo. 5 and 6 are completely fine as SNES and if you want the extra content play the GBA versions with sound and brightness patches.

I got rid of the screen tearing by turning on vsync for my video card (nvidia control panel), but they really should put a vsync option in the game. Other than that (and I agree the font), I am really enjoying these too, music and visuals.

i feel like what prevents very specifically the FF1 and FF2 pixel remasters from being the perfect definitive versions is the lack of the bonus dungeons. like while FF1's is a minor mostly travel through the soul dungeon to beat bosses from other FFs, FF2's arcane labyrinth and soul of rebirth are both actually essential and very important to FF2's lore(emperor of heaven and Deumion and the destroy and revive spells, like a spell that can destroy the world in the wrong hands was awesome lore for FF2) the psp versions are sadly definitive in terms of bonus content but, the pixel remaster fixed some of the slow or tedious parts of the games(like FF2's weapon leveling is FAR faster now and not based on uses per battle) so, Fi in that retrospect, i believe these pixel remasters are the definitive versions of the oldest versions of their games(FF2 especially cuz having the og nes portraits for Firion maria and guy is awesome, Firion's party menu portrait looks amazing)

Someone already has a pixel font out made to look like the Mystic Quest games. It looks really nice with these. Also I don't think I had screen tearing in Borderless Window mode, so I'd try that if you haven't already.

There is already a DIY font tweak that can be done in a few minutes, which involves copying and renaming a few files. A full don't mod probably wouldn't be far off.

Actually the funniest thing about this is the pathetic attempt SquareEnix made when announcing the games! The screens were microscopic and we couldn't even see WHAT they were selling!

I personally Like the SNES/GBA/PSP versions of the character sprites. In this collection the details in the Characters are missing completely. But better than the previous Mobile versions.

screen tearing is because there is no v-sync option in the menu, if you go to Nvidia control panel(or AMD equivalent) and force it on, it fixes it

I love the way the Pixel Remasters look! It reminds me of the Japanese art for Final Fantasy IV and V, still the little chibi characters, but with more clarity and detail. All they need to do is fix that font and we're good xD

I feel for anyone who didn't pick up an NES Classic or SNES Classic back when you could get them in stores and know you were getting the genuine system and not some crap knockoff from China, they're such great systems. Plus you can dual boot NES Classic and SNES Classic kernels on either system and use NES Classic and SNES Classic controllers on either system. And then NES Classic's kernel will also play Famicom Disk System games flawlessly. So buy one of these systems and then one of the controllers from the other system and you have NES / Famicom / Famicom Disk System / Super NES / Super Famicom all with first rate emulation and controllers that feel like the real thing.

The screen tearing can be fixed by enabling vsync in your graphics card settings and people have already posted instructions on replacing the English font with the Japanese font (still text in English, just a different font), so your negatives have already been taken care of.

I hate that square removed the other versions of FF1 and FF2 from the App Store. Especially the lovely note they were so kind to provide saying that if you delete the game or change devices you may not be able to redownload the game. Oh ya, and you have to repurchase the game if you would like to redownload the only available version of the game you already purchased.

Just finished my playthrough of Final Fantasy last night. Very impressed overall, and the music team completely knocked it out of the park. I was lucky enough to not experience of the screen tearing you had mentioned. Very much looking forward to starting up II tonight. I've actually never completed that one.

There's already a font fix, where you go into the assets, duplicate and rename 2 Japanese font files to replace the 2 English files, and the result is much more appropriate font choice. You should be able to google a guide explaining in more detail. The performance is what really bugs me though, the screen tearing and frame-rate. I thought there would be stuff that would bug me, but thought it would at least run smoothly.

For the screen tearing, you can turn on v-sync through the NVIDIA Control Panel which completely fixed it for me.

For the most part, I really like what's been done here but I honestly prefer the PSP version's style. Everything is just so crisp looking on that tiny little screen, and the updated sprite designs and backgrounds fit it so well. The same goes for my sentiments towards II, and especially IV's "Complete Edition".

Um... where did you get the info that Nobuo Uematsu has remixed the music? I've finished the FF1 right now, and in the staff roll i see him noted as Original Composer, while arrangement was done by somebody else. As for "held back by technical limitations"... what about PS1 and GBA sprites? And also PSP sprites...

My grandpa absolutely loved the original Final Fantasy on the NES and played it over and over again. The only problem was that he did not like the 8-bit music and sound, so he would always play the game muted. Also, unfortunately, he passed away some months before this version was released. I hope he gets to play a version like this in the afterlife.

I'm looking for to FFIII the most since the Wonder Swan version was canceled way back which meant we didn't get a GBA version here later. The 3D DS version was OK but I really wanted to play that 2D version remaster and now we finally got one.

You can name characters more than 6 letters, move diagonally, it looks absolutely beautiful, sounds like a wonderful soundtrack, our friend the Thief is finally once again rocking the cyan haircut, I personally don't mind the font but am cool with modding it (and I also recommend it), and everyone can finally enjoy Final Fantasy III in its purest form, including being able to tell between Onion Knights 1 - 4! I already find this to be the definitive release of the first three so far, even if the Thief in FF3 isn't available from the Crystal of Wind. I am so excited to see what they take to Final Fantasy IV, my favorite RPG of all time!

I love most of the remastered stuff...The issues I have? They took out some of the things that made challenges fun and easier, such as not allowing you to earn money and items through the ship game, and the power peninsula in FF1.

@@chicoti3 Not necessarily. Not everybody _has_ a ps1, psp, nds, or 3ds. Some people will _only_ game on their PCs. Or, they once had these machines (esp the ps1) and no longer do. I think on its own merits even when compared to these other versions, it stands well enough, because it's the only legal means on PC other than the gaudy crappy phone ports that were so bad they were outright removed on Steam. Sure, it's missing the optional content, but meh. That's okay. Most of it was unbalanced and didn't really fit the rest of the game anyhow.

I just fixed the font on my version and it made the game so much more enjoyable to look at. On top of that, I actually loved the QoL updates like the mini map auto-battle, which helped cut down on small grinding spots in FF1. I already have the PSP versions of 1-4, which might be my overall preferred way to play, but I definitely would love to try the Pixel Remastered versions of 4,5, and 6. Glad I'm not the only one who was able to look past the initial flaws and see the great versions in their own right underneath them.

You're really gonna try to tell me that it's all redone 100% from scratch, when it's extremely easy to see that's not the case at all. A not insignificant amount of what they've given us is stuff they ALREADY gave us in other ports/versions of the game.

My gripe with the pixel remasters is that they seem to be the bare minimum and not much more. Even putting aside the extra content, I would have loved to see the enemy sprites having actual animations, the UI being consistent with the rest of the game's visuals, the overworld looking prettier and less like an amalgamation of the GBA versions and some RPGmaker crap, list goes on and on. It's especially egregious considering that the first few Dragon Quest games just got a MASSIVE overhaul with an insane amount of effort obviously put into it. I may buy the pixel remasters of 1 through 3 simply for the novelty, but I can't imagine there even being much to change about the SNES trilogy, so I'm gonna skip those. That said, the new OSTs -- they fuckin nailed those. That's the silver lining here: I got a bunch of awesome reimaginings of my favorite classic FF tunes to listen to at my leisure. Can't wait to hear what they do with Dancing Mad.

I like this, I bought it. I'm loving the changes... And then I saw the trailer for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remaster... and now I'm actually pretty disappointed. I hope Final Fantasy 4-6 look like Octopath Traveller, but I'm not holding my breath.

Pixel remaster of 3 is the best, having beaten nes version of 3 myself. Half of the changes to the 3D version were redundant and poinless with no expansion such as small character development and stupid job-to-level "change phases".

To be honest, the only of them I'm interested in is the ff3 one since it's the only of them that never got a remake based on it's original nes version. I love the ds remake but to play something closer to the original is rather appealing.

I just finished the FF1 PR and I can't say the font choice bothered me very much. I thought it looked unfitting at first, but got used to it quickly. I had a great time with the game and have no desire to go back to the NES version now.

Dude, the text boxes are made for mobile phones, there's screen tearing that we can clearly notice even in your video, the price is outrageous, we can't play it on console, there's no possibility to switch to original graphics but hey the original game was amazing and they put new backgrounds + quality of life features so it's 9/10, right? I was expecting a rant on this one. I hope this is a joke.

I'm curious how 4-6 will be as those originally felt more unique compared to 1-3. I was hoping those would be a bit more individually remastered, versus 1-3 which so far have all shared the same UI and graphics so far. I am really liking how 1-3 turned out as like you said they feel more like the originals versus the 3D remakes which I didn't like as much for the graphic style.

As a first time ff1 player, I personally don’t have any issues with the in-game font. In fact, you could probably fix both this and the screen tearing issues by maxing out DSR and VSYNC/FPS cap in your GPU driver settings.

I'm a newcomer to the franchise, I'm playing through ff1 right now and it's pretty great! I also really don't get why everyone seems to hate the font, it's very readable but I guess veterans are used to something different

It just clashes with the sprite work. If the sprites and stuff were hd designed and modern looking than the super hd text boxes wouldn't look bad, but the fact they're using super clean ui over super super basic flat sprite work makes an unpleasant themeatic clash. Imagine if all the menus in the new God of War game had 8 bit menus.

I... think I may be the only one that doesn't hate the font. It works perfectly fine. I did have an issue with screen tearing but I managed to fix it, I don't know if it's going to work for everyone but I was using my Steam Link to stream it to my TV in my bedroom and the screen tearing was ridiculous in towns. I changed the Resolution to 1080p and put it in Borderless Window and it seemed to fix the problem, game runs smoother visually now.

I'm glad you think they did a good job, but I would rather play the PSP versions of Final Fantasy 1 through 4. The only reason I would buy the Pixel Remaster collection is for Final Fantasy 5 and 6.

Cool. Thank you. I was waffling on this but I think I’ll get III at least. :) A question about 1. Does the auto target move after an enemy dies? It looked like it did. (For anyone too young to remember the first game, if two characters target an enemy and the first character kills it, the second character would inexplicably smack a corpse rather than move onto the next target).

They took the final fantasy 5 and 6 games off of steam just to sell you this. I don't understand why we can't also get the psp version or gba versions. We should have so many option on all platforms pc and console. I would be super happy with this pack but they are charging 74.82 for the full collection, but emulation seems to be what square enix wants us to do. Psp versions are still better and they keep getting rid of options just to keep making money. It's frustrating what square enix pulls with all their games. After buying skyward sword I started realize a remade game should be better than what you can get on emulator. I refuse to buy these games because they don't care about us consumers. They just want money and refuse to allow us option by only giving us one now. Vote with your wallet.

i personally think remasters are a cheep way for a company to make money with very little work. this is a remake although i wouldn't buy these if i have already bought the series in some other form. however if you have a steam deck these are what you should get in my opinion.

@@supersaiyaman11589 I used to have all of them at one point or another, but like a lot of people, sold or lost them over the years, but I understand what you are saying. I like to see these games ported to PC at least, since consoles come and go, but PC offers a sort of constant in the video game scene and way to preserve these games.

I fixed the screen tearing by forcing vsync in my video driver. You can fix fund font by replacing the English font files with the Japanese font files.

So far I have been enjoying FF4 PR. You just need to do some extra steps to perfect it, like enabling Triple Buffering, V sync, downloading font and text box addons. After all that it feels great.

I'm glad we can see pixels and they didn't do the smoothing thing. But I agree about the text. I think I would have preferred the text to also look 16-bit, just for consistency. Hope this comes to consoles. I've been meaning to run through these games again, but have hesitated to do it on my GBA. I'd much rather do it on Switch.

My first Final Fantasy was either FF Legend 1 or Final Fantasy 1. Although, Final Fantasy Legend 2 was the first one I ever finished. Maybe "Final Fantasy Adventure" which was called Mystic Quest where I grew up.

What they could do after Pixel Remaster is do PSP resolution remaster, copying and pasting existing PSP graphics of Final Fantasy I, II, and IV and the background and enemy graphics of the Steam versions of V and VI, and fill in the battle background graphics to match Pixel Remaster but at PSP resolution. The character sprites would have to be made from scratch, as would the graphics of Final Fantasy III, with the Pixel Remaster version as the basis and the PSP version of Final Fantasy IV for inspiration. A PSP resolution remaster of Final Fantasy I-VI would reinstate the bonus content from the versions before Pixel Remaster, and be made on Unity Engine like the Pixel Remaster version.

I get that the PSP versions look better graphically, but as someone who grew up in the NES era and FF1 was one of my favorites, this has a lot of nostalgia to it for me :) It kind of looks like if FF1 was remade for the SNES...And since I've never had a chance to play the rest through ff6 (Well, some FF4(2) on the SNES) I'm looking forward to a good, long playthrough!

Thank you so much for this review. I am a HUGE FF fan. Until lately my job prevented me from enjoying games much so i been sticking with moba's like league. So i can play a round or two every night. But now things have changed ( for the better ) and I have time for games again. I really wanted to play FF 2 on SNES when i stumbled across this bundle on steam. Theres a few versions you can buy and im definitely getting the pixel version due to this video. Again, thanks for everything, enjoyed your opinion on the games.

You can change the font within the game. In the data folders w/in the steam directory for each game, there's a StreamingAssets folder that has all of the fonts. If you change the font_ja files to font_en, it more or less fixes it. The font_ja file shares a similar look to the FF4 PSP port.

I honestly don't mind the font at all, but I also never understood the problem people always have with Comic Sans, so.. *shrugs?* I am loving these so far. Going through FF1 right now but I really want to jump to 3 next because I want to see if/how they have rebalanced the Crystal Tower!

The PSP games look far superior. ...and at first I pretty much gave up on these games because of it ... but then I heard the staggeringly great music and realised that Nubuo did the work and now I don't even care if I end up thinking the games are better or worse than the PSP versions. ... The music alone makes them essential to at least play once.

Just seeing all the upgraded battle effects, overworld update (the water, clouds), environmental effects and the remixed soundtracks I definitely can't wait to see what they're gonna do with IV - VI, especially in terms of the environmental and overworld updates. Like imagine World of Ruin having a bigger feeling of dread and isolation due to the remix and what they add to the map for that appearance of a desolate, struggling world. If I was to pinpoint when the next 3 would be done I would predict around November/December, just from the size of them compared to I - III and what they're doing for these, they will take time and I can't wait to play a version of VI on steam that doesn't look horrible (monster designs are great, characters are just terrible) Fingers crossed for a Console release, hell a physical collection with special edition, etc.
