Say what you want about the gameplay, but the lore in MKMSZ was absolutely amazing and on-point. How many franchises produced spin-off games that did not include complete non-sequitor stories that are basically retconned and furthermore actually added sooooo many elements to the main series? I'm sure I'm missing some but: 1) First appearance of Quan Chi, basically designed consistently for decades after 2) First appearance of Shinnok (and amulet), establishing his backstory and motives 3) First appearance of Netherrealm, also basically designed consistently for decades after 4) Introduced the element of 'Even though Sub killed Scorpion, Scorpion thinks Sub also killed Clan/Family, when in reality Quan Chi did' 5) Raiden respects and trusts Sub, but is cautious about his character 6) First appearance of Fujin 7) First appearance of Sareena; establishing that only evil soulless beings can come from the Netherrealm 8) Establishing relationship between Shinnok and Shao Kahn in a throwaway line: confirming they are different threats but also that Shinnok scoffs at Shao Kahn's powers And of course, the Big Kahuna and something that still blows my mind to this day, that they spent like 12/13 years building up to the completely logical reveal that Sub became NS: All the hints at Sub containing darkness in his soul, and how he somehow 'belongs' in the Netherrealm. The two most inconsequential cutscenes in this game in theory (Sub with Shinnok in prison, Sub talking w Quan Chi before fight) actually both contain many hidden allusions: Shinnok implying Sub belongs there, Quan Chi trying to recruit Sub into the Brotherhood of Shadow. that was the only thing the playstation had against the N64 version, while the grame looked better on the n-64, the playstation was able to have the full motion cinemas, the n64 version only had picture stills with words on the screen. that was the only thing in all that playstation was able to do over n64 was the cinemas. But then when the N64 cartridge tripled to 512mg and they put both discs of resident evil 2 with the cinemas, it was da bomb, the n64 version not only looked and played better but it had the fmv's albeit grainy but still, the game looked superb to the PC version in which they said that was what they ported mainly. But by that time it was too late for N64 vs playstation, Dreamcast came out later that year in 99, and then also the playstation 2 in 2000. taking it to the next level, then by 2001, the xbox and gamecube. But still, I miss the Playstation vs N64 days, they were brutal, it was videogame wars. Playstation used to get the upper hand because of the cinemas and then Zelda came out, and boom! LOL! I sooo miss the 90's
