Lately, more groups are going for a dark concept and that's a good thing - since it's really a taboo in the industry, especially when you mix a dark concept with rock. But when it comes to consistency and longevity, with some form of international success - Dreamcatcher is sort of in their own league. (At least where kpop girl groups are concerned.) Sure some have "tried" a dark concept, or went with a rock heavy song...but a lot of them usually deviate away from it - either because the group is new and they're trying to experiment, or they encounter some kind of backlash whether for their concept or their sound. DC has been consistently dark, and consistently rock-based (albeit in recent years, they're going for a more fusion sound .. at least for their title tracks). When it comes to their concerts, it has consistently been performed with a live rock band as well.

Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. It's not exactly a Deja Vu per definition, but I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event.

I hope no one was terribly rude or anything about Pixy/Pink Fantasy. Finding commonalities and making associations is human nature. Can't blame someone for that. "Deja Vu" is unnecessarily beautiful. Every single thing about it. Production, scenery, story, acting, lyrics...everything. Always have to shout out the Dami vocals (girl in blue with the short brown hair). She's their main rapper. When people tell you that everyone in Dreamcatcher is a vocalist, they mean that with complete sincerity. Not going to lie, the way I personally interpret the literal story in the video always makes me super emotional. Handong's "holding this pain" line is one of the most iconic in their discography. The lyrics "If through wets tears, through belated regrets..." wreck me for whatever reason. 😭 Personally, I feel like the "Nightmare" series is a freaking commitment. 😂 I usually recommend people check out a few of the standalones before starting the "Nightmare" series. Granted, that's mostly because they start out with the "Dystopia" series. In this situation, I'd say go "Dystopia" series first. It's short and the message is incredible and bold. I won't tell you details, but the main theme of the series is addressing and calling out anonymous harassment, bullying, and obsession with technology to try and escape that tough reality. The lyrics are well thought out and the symbolism in the videos is fantastic. After that, probably do "Nightmare" series and sprinkle in some Special Clips if you need a breather. Which, their B-side performance videos and self-made MV "Special Clips" are great. You're going to love them! Thanks for the reactions! Dreamcatcher love is always appreciated!

As an InSomnia, I think Pink Fantasy got a lot of inspiration from Dreamcatcher to do a darker concept, which is a good thing coz we need more new girl group with concept like this in K-Pop industry...Pink Fantasy actually appreciate Dreamcatcher, even done a few cover of Dreamcatcher's song in their own channel...they work really hard for their 'Poison' comeback, so please support them...

I already mentioned it in your because reaction and deja vu kind of follows along the same line. because could be interpreted as ones internal conflict between good/evil. here in deja vu, evil won and one member betrayed everything she once held dear for power but in the end had nothing. a main recurring theme in their discography is to never give up on your dreams(hence dreamcatcher) but more importantly to not lose yourself in its pursuit. you will see a lot of light/dark good/evil duplicates/mirrors in many of their mvs to help convey this theme. a lot of the times the imagery and lyrics are very abstract and in some cases it's very apparent such that lightbulbs go off for past songs you heard but were totally lost on. dreamcatcher was born from failure and was a second chance for many of its members to fulfill their dreams as singers. their past failure was in part due to conforming to the kpop mold which some of the members did not like. if they were going to fail, they wanted to fail doing it their way and that's why many aspects of dreamcatcher are so different from the typical kpop/idol scene. this past history plays a large part in their lyrics.

Oh yeah except for SuA and Siyeon (kinda), you wouldn't recognise them here from just having seen BEcause; all hair colours and length are completely different xD Some videos have their names in the subtitles though, Deja Vu does; as well as Scream and BOCA (for Scream the regular English subs, and for BOCA it's specifically the English (UK) and English (US) subtitles only that have their names) Obviously I love the Deja Vu MV because it's absolutely stunning, my only "critique" (not really) is that we don't see much choreo, because the choreo for this one is actually amazing. Thankfully they have a great dance performance video for that though.

Thank you for Deja Vu reaction. The MVs for their title tracks have always been story based, even if it's a standalone MV. 😉 I think it'll be easier to follow your current poll. But if you'd like to first see how they introduced their sound to the K-pop scene, then it'll be Nightmare Series. While the Dystopia Trilogy is where their popularity skyrocketed.

Dont worry about the comparison. Somnias are pretty chill & understanding, given the nature of the group. They’re different from the rest of the kpop, so we’d need to be different as well to be stanning them in the first place lulz. I’d suggest follow the poll result and just start with the dystopia series first before nightmare series. They have different sound for both series 🤟🏻

I'd say go straight to Nightmare series for more rock stuff. Dystopia series title tracks are somewhat heavier but with less rock elements. BOCA has some serious guitar action tho. The real rock songs from the Dystopia era are hidden in the b-sides. (Tension and Break the wall)

It's better to follow the order if you want to also enjoy the ride with the storylines. Also, fyi the B-sides can sometimes be brighter and not as rock. Thanks for the reaction!

Of course they would say what they said about the Pink Fantasy/Pixy. They first reacted to them. If they would’ve reacted to DC first it would’ve been the other way around. Now about the series. I really don’t think it matters which one you do first. For me as an InSomnia I’m happy to see any reaction to our girls, MV’s, covers, Special Clips, funny compilations, anything DC related makes me happy.

4 months after this Special MV, Dreamcatcher released their first Korean Studio Album called 'Dystopia: The Tree of Language', their best one to date. With it, they started the Dystopia Trilogy with the first part called 'Scream'. It represents the Hear No Evil part, followed by Boca (Speak No Evil) and Odd Eye (See No Evil). Dystopia, unlike most other DC stories, isn't horror themed. It explores the evils of our online world, especially online violence, cyber bulling and fake gossip and news. The Dystopia era brought great success to Dreamcatcher, as their sales and views doubled and exploded, landing them in #7 of the total girl group K-Pop sales for 2021 for their albums Dystopia: Road to Utopia (Odd Eye) and Summer Holiday (BEcause). One place above Mamamoo and one below BP. All DC title songs incorporate Rock and Nu Metal elements. This is more evident in their Nightmare Series, their first storyline. However, Dreamcatcher also have so many amazing b-sides crossing music styles and moods. And it's there where their vocals shine.

@aislin2989
@aislin2989 2 жыл бұрын
Please don't apologize for mentioning Pixy and Pink Fantasy - like you said, you just saw them first. If you don't use the poll results for the next video, you can break down the series into a particular sound - Nightmare is J-rock inspired, Dystopia is K-rock fusion. So I'd say pick the one that intrigues you more. Nightmare is very heavy in visual symbolism. Dystopia is very heavy in lyrical symbolism, so most of the story telling is in the lyrics and not on screen. Dystopia you have to have the CCs on in order to get what they're trying to say. You can grab some things from visuals, but it makes way more sense with the lyrics. For Nightmare, you *really* have to pay attention to even the most minor things, they tend to be recurring themes or lend some additional information into the story. (The Book, butterflies, spiders... oh right, hope you're not arachnophobes because there are spider elements in Nightmare. They're using inspiration from the Navajo story of Spider Woman as a base. Anyway. The girls are also all assigned a particular nightmare that they show elements of and I'll put them down (way) below so you can avoid the spoiler if you want. There's artwork on the walls, particular numbers, dolls, the way their clothes are put on...) here be spoilers! The Nightmares: Jiu - being chased by someone Sua - sleep paralysis/unable to move Siyeon - being trapped in a small room/claustrophobia Handong - being watched Yoohyeon - being lost in an unknown place Dami - being hurt (this has an intriguing bit that I'll prolly talk about when you react to Chase Me) Gahyeon - falling from high places

Dreamcatcher is not the pioneer of 'Rock K-Pop'...it's more like they 'revived' the long gone genre in K-pop industry & make 'em great again by combining it with darker concept...early K-Pop style is more to Pop Rock & Pop Metal...besides, the founding father of K-Pop is from Metal background...

That is kinda true...and not. Indeed old K-pop bands like N.Ex.T, Crying Nut, or the legendary Taiji (& Boys) have really hard rock influence, while newer groups like No Brain, TraxX, or CN Blue are softer but still has that rock vibe. But as far as I know, Dreamcatcher is the first one combining the hard music with dark/creepy concept, and also the first girl group bringing that concept.
