Count me in the "I FRIGGIN' LOOOVE THIS COMEBACK" camp. It's too early to say for sure, but I've been an Insomnia since "Piri" era, and this may well be my favorite Dreamcatcher title track. A couple of reasons why this album sounds somewhat different: This is the first new storyline since the departure of LEEZ from the Edenary songwriting/production team, who had been with Dreamcatcher (and ATEEZ) since debut (we love you LEEZ and wish you all the best at Hi-Hat!), and after finishing off the Apocalypse trilogy, it was the right time to experiment with a new sound. Ollounder brought in many of his Edenary colleagues, many of whom had worked in minor roles on previous Dreamcatcher tracks, to assist him now that he is the sole lead songwriter/producer. With new blood and new ideas the sound is going to change - but to me it feels of a piece with previous Dreamcatcher eras. (Side note, this is also the first comeback in a while not choreographed by (former?) Performance Director Hwang Sooyeon - who recently had her solo debut. "OOTD" was choreographed by Rian and Gabby of the La Chica dance team, who have previously choreographed all of Chung Ha's best title tracks as well as Twice.) Also, I didn't really notice until I saw a performance with Korean subtitles - like 90% of the lyrics are English. There's a smattering of Korean here and there, but this is primarily an English song. It seems clear to me, coming out of the pandemic, Dreamcatcher Company are doubling down on the international market. Seeing how most of (G)I-DLE's growth since their hiatus has been internationally, and seeing how the Korean market is over-saturated with groups now, I can easily see how the company believes the best and clearest path to growing an audience, that has been stuck at around the same level since "BOCA", lies outside of Korea. Finally, the members are about a year in to their second contracts, and from things they have said online and at fan signs, that their musical interests are broader than the sound that they have made their own as Dreamcatcher. So I don't doubt that they have expressed the desire to grow and be challenged by new concepts. I have, do and always will love Dreamcatcher, but I haven't been this EXCITED about Dreamcatcher in a couple of years!!

I'm new to Dreamcatcher (huge fan though, am on board!), and this answered a lot of the questions I had. I knew that this comeback had been a bit divisive, at least among the online fandom, but I've found it so interesting, thank you for the greater context.

@@jenniferdunmore Welcome to Insomnia...there's never a bad time to join but you picked an exciting time too! I don't really understand the online hand-wringing about the "concept change" or "different sound". Dreamcatcher and their Edenary composers have been experimenting with so many different sounds and styles throughout the seven years since debut (and longer if you count Minx) - mainly on b-sides but you look at "BOCA" and "Deja Vu" and its easy to see that not all of their title tracks have sounded alike. The members have explicitly said many times that their personal musical tastes are all over the place and they aren't wedded to any one sound. They perform many of their songs over and over during their tours that I can easily see them being excited for a challenge and something different. That said, I don't think this sound is THAT different - heavy, intense, a mix of rock guitars and electronic bass and synths. It FEELS different because it's a new story, and mostly in English, but to me it definitely feels like Dreamcatcher. And I love it!

@@jenniferdunmore I would also like to add some lore on the mv and more context if you don't mind reading more. I see a lot of people confused about the "change of concept" and the lyrics, so I figured I would explain the context behind this MV. Before every comeback, Dreamcatcher always release a "mystery code" - a picture with hints about the future comeback. For this CB, the mystery code consisted of a whole ARG with an X account (ymenehcra99, who also appears in the MV in 0:48 and 2:35), documenting the descent into madness of the user, who was obsessed with "the crown". The person running the account mentioned doing things like spending lots of money on luxurious clothes, chasing a truck with the crown symbol and almost getting into an accident as a result, and they even posted an audio of what sounded like an alarm, as if they had stolen something; all that in order to be "worthy of the crown". This MV might seem flashy and superficial, but it's supposed to be satire about how things like the idol industry (and social media too) are not as glamourous as they seem at first, since a lot of what is posted is actually fake. It's also critisizing how some people are willing to do anything to be famous and get attention: buying nice clothes and faking a luxurious lifestyle (hence the OOTD lyrics being so narcissistic and so "generic" - they're playing as the "villains" who let fame and power get to their heads/won't stop at nothing to get attention - and Sua and Siyeon posing in front of cars and motorbikes around 0:27 and 0:40), staging fake drama (like Handong and Yoohyeon faking a fight in front of the camera in 1:32, only for Handong to help Yoohyeon immediately afterwards), or even editing their reality to make it look more interesting or appealing (see for example the very obvious green screen behind the girls during the dance scenes in 2:55, or the multiple photo/video editing references, like in the very beginning of the video). DCC really put a lot of thought into the concept, so it's a pity that many people don't have enough context to properly understand it. Hopefully this comment clears the confusion about the lyrics and concept!💖

@@DREAMCATCHER_JUSTICE_VirtuouS Great description of the lore/background! Dreamcatcher have always tried to tell a story with their MVs, even when the songs themselves didn't entirely match up with the story being told. This time, though, I feel like the group's ambitions synced almost perfectly with what they were able to pull off, both creatively and budget-wise. EVERY single time I watch the MV I am further attacked by the members, while also seeing new details hidden in the nooks and crannies of the MV. The phrase "next level" is thrown around too freely these days, but WOW. This truly is a level WAY beyond anything Dreamcatcher have pulled off in the past.

“A villain is greedy and tends to not care about what others think, and it’s the same with your outfit,” JiU said during a showcase held on Wednesday at Konkuk University's Millennium Hall in eastern Seoul to celebrate the release of the new album. The lead track “OOTD” is a pop punk track whose name derives from the popular hashtag “outfit of the day.” It centers on being “destructive and extraordinary” by being confident. The point was obviously made through the seven members’ chic outfits, as they collectively sported black leather jackets, matched with black baggy pants and white crop shirts, finished off with silver baseball caps. “The song is about being flashy with one’s OOTD, as a personal choice,” JiU said. “You can see the villain’s confidence as well as the seven members fighting over a crown in the music video.” Confidence is the key message of the “VersuS” series, according to Dreamcatcher. The group has been known to have deep central themes underlying its album series, such as environmental issues portrayed in the “Apocalypse” series and cyberbullying in the “Dystopia” series. “A confident concept is something we've always wanted to do for so long,” SuA said. “We hope fans will be surprised at what we are capable of presenting to the audience.”

dreamcatcher is the future 🩵🩵🩵 love them so much. also, rj, the girls have some special stages for their b-sides, so you could make a video on that if you’re interested. for the members: red long hair (siyeon, poses on the car at the beginning) short blue hair (yoohyeon, gets pushed onto the floor before dami’s rap) long blonde hair (handong, in the scenes with mirrors, in the pink dress) long pink hair (gahyeon, in the convenience store photoshoot at the beginning) long blue hair (dami, starts the mv, first member on screen) long black hair (jiu, “i’m venus, nepyths, call me a goddess,” taking photos in the box) long black hair (sua, on the motorbike after siyeon poses on the car)

You could think this is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. I have no idea if my theory is correct, but the fact that the album is called VersuS VillainS makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe useless instagram influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion. The fact that fashion is moving ever faster is the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up. The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback. It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. The music is highly interesting as well. There still is rock there, but dialed back. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.

Instant Cyberpunk 2077 vibe the very first time I listened to this song. I'm living for this! Oh, and at 7:47, pretty sure this is a bass guitar with lots of fuzz (or a synth that emulates a fuzzy bass). Pretty standard choice when wanting to bring some nastiness to a track.

This is actually a very nasty song about narcisism and the emptiness of showbiz. “Beyond your reach”. Everything must be be perfect. Flawless, spotless. Yet at times there are bruises and scars all over them. Bragging about money and cars. “Get the F out of my way”. “Drunk every day”. Every shot is lifted from a typical K-pop video. The video crew is seen all the time but they are just black silhouttes. At the end they are shown surrounded by a circular green screen becoming an artificial stage. Nothing is real in this world. Oh, and of course: OOTD means “outfit of the day”. That’s what everything is reduced to in this world. Holy hell. I only now noticed: when the video stops after the fight one of the personnel is holding a GUN! In the end someone is holding the camera. They take it away. The cameraman falls to the floor. Now he has no power over them.

DREAMCATCHER OOTD meaning: The song "OOTD" by Dreamcatcher appears to be about self-confidence and embracing one's personal style and individuality. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day," which is a term commonly used on social media platforms to showcase one's fashion choices. In the song, the members of Dreamcatcher express their confidence and uniqueness through their fashion choices. They assert that their fashion is their own, stating "OOTD, this my fashion, shut up, no more questions." They emphasize their ability to stand out and leave a lasting impression, comparing themselves to a time-lapse that will be remembered. The lyrics also touch upon their success and rise in the industry. They describe themselves as unforgettable and incredible, vying for attention and revolutionizing the scene. Despite facing challenges, they remain determined and focused on their goals, suggesting that they are on a different level than others. The chorus mentions materialistic elements such as champagne, necklaces, black dresses, and a luxury watch (rollie), implying a celebration of their achievements and a sense of luxury. It can be interpreted as a symbol of their status and success. The bridge and outro further emphasize their confidence and self-worth. They describe themselves as flawless, gorgeous, spotless, and priceless. This repetition highlights their belief in their own beauty and value. Overall, "OOTD" by Dreamcatcher celebrates personal style, confidence, and self-expression while also asserting their success and determination in the music industry. It encourages listeners to be proud of their uniqueness and to embrace their individual fashion choices.
