Don't do this in Prague! When you visit this country, definitely don't do these 345 things. Trust me, I've lived in Prague for over 9 years and I've definitely made some of these mistakes! This is one of the most fun countries to visit in Europe, and if you can avoid these mistakes, you'll have a better time and get to experience the city and country like a local.

Ahoj! I'm Jen, Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Everyday we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

People say it's nothing, but it is an important distinction. If a journalist finds some dirt on some politician in Western Europe, the politician resigns. If it happens in Eastern Europe, the journalist disappears. We're in the middle, so nothing happens here.

For as, it is something like Texas it isnt Nebraska and Alabama is totally different as NY. if you want to visit Eastern Europe go to Ukraina, Belorusia or Moldavia, for Baltic state Luthinia, Latvia or Estonia and Central Europe is Central Europe Czechia it is same like Germany or Poland. Totally no offence, it is an example.
@SlosII

@@wongalcz1611 when you get a 100 CZK fine for driving the wrong way in a one way street, that smells more like Eastern europe than Central europe to be honest. I don't think Germany/Austria/Switzerland do 4 euro fines, lol. CZ may be geographically central but that's where is ends. CZ is the same like DE? Are you saying CZ is socio-economically at the same level as the richest, most powerful nation in Europe?! I'd say it's time to buy those Ryanair tickets and start travelling!
@SlosII
@SlosII 3 жыл бұрын
@@mortisCZ When an outsider refers to CZ as Eastern Europe, he's not talking about the geographic location, he is referring to you being east or west of the famous iron curtain. It's actually funny how Czechs try to point them to the map and say; 'look we're actually not east, we're central'. Who are they fooling? I'm not sure Austria and Switzerland agree on you being part of 'Central Europe'. When you travel from Prague to Vienna you are going west by going east, that's quite unique, lol. Ignoring reality/history by pointing out the geographic location on a map does not alter said reality/history. Look, I cannot blame the Czechs for having been invaded and ruled by communists, there is no way a small country like CZ can defend itself against an agressor like Russia but what I do blame them for is that 3 decades after the Velvet revolution the smell of communism and socialism is still hanging around on the streets, the vibe is definitely an eastern vibe in way too many places, I blame the Czechs for not getting rid of this stench! Are you fine with being reminded of this horrible and sad past every time you wait for a tram or bus (if you know what I mean, lol)?

@@ZDrozd That is a darn good question. In my experience, we know that the question is serious from the intonation. In addition to that, a person would only ask with that intonation of seriousness if they were really allowed to ask. For example, if I run into a friend, then my question is answered in all seriousness. Or if I had just told closer acquaintances about something serious in my life like someone dying or me losing a job. If I am buying a coffee (not at Starbucks. I can burn my own coffee at home.) the question is merely social and not answered seriously. I am so sorry English does so much weird stuff, Zbynek.

Excellent tips! I had to learn some of these the hard way when I fist moved to Prague. Of course, when I moved there in 1991, it was still Czechoslovakia ... and I was living in Kostelec nad Orlici (u Hradce) when Czech and Slovakia split .... hardly anyone in Czech even noticed! :) well .... that is how I remembered it anyway! And oooohhhhh how I miss smažák!! Fried mozzarella here in America just doesn't cut it! I still remember the audio that played at every metro stop .... "Ukončete prosím, vystůp a nastůp, dveře se zaviraji! Přiští staníce ... Českomorávská" And yes ... there are many great towns to visit outside of Prague ... Brno being one of my favorites (have you toured through the castle - Špielberk-- there yet? Very cool experience)! Interesting fact ... Brno was the home of yhe great geneticist Gregor Mendl .... Karlovy Vary is another beautiful little city, with the best fresh Oplátky! Okay .... this is my second long comment on one of your clips! Say good night Honziček ... Dobrou noc, Honziček! 😊

Very good recommendations, indeed. Regarding trams, their drivers are not reckless but if you get in the way the driver has to choose between harming you and harming everybody on board. Even though he will definitely try to stop using maximum reasonable braking power, you'll be the one pulling the short end. Regarding use of Euros, large shopping chains like Billa accept them at reasonable exchange rate, you'll not be robbed. You can even get better rate than in an exchange office. But any returned change will be in czech crowns.

@@vaclav_fejt Trams have magnetic brake. It's that block of metal hanging between wheels. If used to maximum power, it sticks to the track and will stop the tram on the spot. I have heard it happened once and the tram pulled the track out of the ground and it needed to be rebuilt.

I was surprised the first time a stern waitress looked directly at me with no facial expression and mumbled "Mate prani?" My first thought was "of course; that's why I'm in your restaurant" but it was clear that she was just asking me for my menu selection. All languages have colloquial phrases that may say or ask one thing but mean something different. Part of learning new languages and cultures is learning how the locals use their words. If I go to Canada and say that I need to jump out of myself, they would have no idea what I'm saying, but it makes sense in the Czech Republic. As a rule, I don't try to attribute cultural attitudes based on colloquial phrases, as I don't believe one country exclusively owns universal superiority, correctness, kindness or sincerity.

Thanks for these videos. I am just loving your humor. By the way, there are two things that foreigners are quite missing out on the public transports (and some Czech youngsters too): 1. It is appropriate to let one's seat to an elderly, pregnant or disabled person. Or to make room for those with a pram or some heavy burden. 2. It is rather convenient and polite to take one's bag out of the back in a full tram. Simply not to be an egocentric ...
