I always prefer musicianship > showmanship. But man, I liked that fill on its own, but got completely bamboozled when Jordan had already switched to the Keytar... this is what makes live shows special, those small surprises :)

While the fill was a nice surprise, it would've been completely unnecessary had Jordan solo'ed on they keytar all the way through the instrumental section. Not like he couldn't, technique-wise, and not like his keytar doesn't have an expression controller on the handle. Also it would've made it a bad-ass duel-like thing with Petrucci. But oh well.

@@maximummatt73 maybe. Having gone to over 200 live shows of well known bands and over 1000 live shows in my life, being an amateur musician myself, I'd like to think I have a pretty good idea of what I am talking about. Also, as a DT fan of the 90s and 00s, having been privileged enough to see them live, once in every keyboardist era, I've always thought they seemed bored on stage and wished for more stage presence. That comment above about showmanship < musicianship is very true, but there's got to be a balance. I stand by what I said and will respectfully agree to disagree, since it's your post and you're king of the castle. Drum fill was nice.

Gonna miss Mangini when he showed true class and professional drumming in DT: no overplaying, consistent tempos, the intense musical dialogs with the others and accenting what they're playing. DT felt like an organic (i.e. unforced by any single ego), cohesive band when MM was around. I wish DT never dumped him or even limited his musical creativity as written on that contract or whatever deal stating that he should not play all of Portnoy's roles, but oh well, the sands of time have fallen.

They wrote my all time favorite body of music in those 13 years. I'll be forever thankful and grateful to have experienced it. I had hoped to sear it since 2002 when I picked a Mullmuzzler album with where Mike was drumming for James. I really like Portnoy these days, but I hope somehow Mangini returns.

I’ve been a drummer for 28 years, Mangini is probably one of the top 5 drummers in the world (look at his resume) it was kinda disappointing listening to MP (who is a great drummer, just not in the same league as Mangini) playing this song and just skipping some of the double bass patterns live. Mangini is an absolute beast.

It really pays off to teach your ear how to listen for bass in music. Back when I was young, I missed every genius thing that Flea did in RHCP when he wasn't playing a lead role in the song. Now with DT and Haken, listening for the bass parts enhances the song so much. Bass is really an underappreciated instrument, especially considering how someone who knows what they're doing with it, like Myung, can change the song entirely.

@@Alfred_-vp9ys There’s pitch correction and then there’s auto tune. You people need to stop calling it that, it’s an insult to musical engineering. Auto tune is what you hear in trap songs blasting from people’s cars and pitch shifting is used by nearly ALL engineers. Even in some of the King Crimson live videos or that YES performance with Geddy Lee I’ve noticed this just a tad. It’s widely used for guitars and bass as well as vocals. It’s a necessity for mixing live or in-studio whether you’re a good musician or not. There’s always some post-work done on a live DVD or else it sounds like shit. Dream Theater’s “Score” which many people (myself included and probably you, as well) praise it for being one of - if not THE best - live DVD and it’s still pitch corrected. Please stop spreading misinformation. This can even be used to balance out reverb and artifacts in audio recordings.
