One of the few reviewers that acknowledges Anderson in anyway. Strange that so few people identify her as the protagonist of the film with meaningful character development and a complete story arc. Dredd serves nicely as the required deus ex machina to make sure the main character survives this hellish day at work but does not need to develop or explain about himself in the least. This movie is art

It's a shame, that Dredd flopped so hard. It uses all the technics of modern filmmaking like 3D, slomo and colour correction, but unlike most Hollywood Action, to it's benefits. Writer Alex Garland went on to write and direct the brilliant Ex Machina and releases "Annihilation" next year. While Pete Travis went back to britain to direct smaller british films.
@SPFLDAngler4 жыл бұрын
It didn't flop though. It did very well for the time it was out. The problem was the lack of advertising and no one talking about it. Everyone who watched it loved it and for some fuckin reason it just flew under the radar for no reason and didn't get any attention until it was too late. I think that other mainstream movies must have came out at the same time to overshadow it, and for some dumb fucking reason hollywood decided not to advertise.
@CapucineNighly3 жыл бұрын

The new Dredd was great, Lena Headey was an AMAZING villain and the look and style of the movie was really well done. I so hoped for a sequel but obviously audience didnt agree and the movie flopped.
@DoctorDodge7 жыл бұрын
I think the problem wasn't that the audience didn't agree. In my experience, most people who saw the film, with the exception of very rare Stallone die-hards, really enjoyed it. The problem was the marketing. It really, really sucked. With just one trailer and little coverage, a lot of people told me they didn't even know that a Dredd film had been released until after it had left theaters. It's found a hugely dedicated cult audience at least, and there is a TV series that's out in a couple of years, so that's something.
@koppsr7 жыл бұрын
James Aggas You re probably right. I thought the same thing , back when it came out. The marketing really sucked. Reminded me of the aweful marketing oft Mononoke and Titan A.E. back in the days, in germany. No real Trailers, no Posters anywhere. I even spotted Posters and signs for Mononoke in a corner in THW cinemaxx i went to , just stuffed in, not even put up properly. Personally, i hoped for a sequel cause of the major success in DVD and BlueRay, but alas...

I think what hurt this movie the most was the heavy marketing on the 3D, which was a doomed gimmick that made the movie seem desperate. I didn't got to the theater to see this one just because of that and only now have I seen the movie and realized it was actually pretty good. It's a shame that things worked out that way. It had the right idea of scope too. It takes place in one mega-block versus one gang and is essentially a routine drug bust that feels because because all major crimes have been upped in scale in Mega-City One. It also had the common sense not to really focus on Dredd himself too much as a character, but rather the world he's in while he delivers justice in it. Just a shame the gimmick had to get in the way of that.

@kidcthulhufortney13209 ай бұрын
Ironically, the '95 version has costumes & props closer to 2000AD. Rico was even his brother in the comic. But the rest of the execution was hot garbage. Meanwhile Dredd 3D captured the feel & setting much better despite the less cartoony/more modern tacticool gear. The saddest part about about Dredd 3D not getting traction is that it was the first of a planned trilogy with the last one actually doing the arc with Anderson versus Judge Death.

I've been a Judge Dredd fan since my childhood, reading the original 2000AD comics sent to Nova Scotia by a friend in London. There are some things about the Stallone version that are done well: the initial fly-over of MegaCity One, some aspects of that Dredd's initial appearance ( the original Dredd would just roll up and declare that an entire city block was under arrest; however, that Dredd could enforce it. Stallone can't.), and certain moments in the Cursed Earth. However, the thing that pissed me off the most was the character of Fergie. In the comic, Fergie was a giant man with powerful strength, but a childish mind, who became a hero by taking down a tyrannical Chief Judge who had made MegaCity One worse than it used to be...which was quite an achievement, believe me. Making Fergie a comic relief idiot was annoying as hell. Overall, though, the 2012 DREDD was , far and away, the superior film.

Stallone's Dredd is basically just John Spartan with less charisma. Armand Assante as Rico was over-the-top crazy and IMO was better than Dredd. But Karl Urban played the character a lot better. I liked the Angel Family in the 95 version though.
