The first ammonite (which you also show us at the end) is an absolutely wonderful display piece. 😃 It has this nice white mineral banding/line Cool video my friend 👍🏻

Thanks man I agree that calcite banding looks really cool. I was surprised how smooth i could get the surface just with different grades of sandpaper. Also made a flat base on it so the fossil stands upright

looking good mate, our Yorkshire coast material is notoriously hard to prep and only use air abraders really to finish the matrix of. Great video and prep work !!

Is the material of the fossil more solid than the rock around?
@Treasurehunter11001
@Treasurehunter11001 3 жыл бұрын
Not really you can easily break the fossil. But the fossil does separate from the rock I guess due to the nature of the fossilisation process , the rock was originally sediment that encased the ammonite , when you strike it with a hammer the fracture will mostly occur between the rock and fossil .
@Hitokage
@Hitokage 3 жыл бұрын
@@Treasurehunter11001 Ah I see! So the process must be harder than it looks like :D
@Treasurehunter11001
@Treasurehunter11001 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hitokage this one wasnt too bad because I had already split the rock open with a hammer so most of the ammonite had exposed cleanly, I just shaped the rock and removed some from the outer whorl

When you said about the rock getting to hard and you unable to do anymore, your absolutely right I have a dremel and I am in the process of saving up for zoic t-Rex pen which costs a large sum of money but with this thing you should be able to prep anything to a high standard! If you are looking to invest in getting a proper air pen it seems like the one to get, but like I say large price...
@Treasurehunter11001
@Treasurehunter11001 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah and I think the rock is what you guys call sticky on that fossil, it's not popping away from the ammonites at all , and gone pyritic in the very centre. I should be moving to the USA next year if they ever re-open the embassy . That's why I haven't bought a pen yet . But I am really liking prepping so may buy one and take with me , maybe you could send me a nodule or two to prep lol

@@Treasurehunter11001 that’s really nice of you to say that dude, I seriously think you have some mad skills with that dremmel, really impressed with the end result, especially as it’s Whitby material too, most folk struggle to get that stuff looking that nice with hundreds of pounds worth of kit. Have you got a Paleo Zoic tip in it?
@Treasurehunter11001
@Treasurehunter11001 3 жыл бұрын
I had broke that nodule open with a hammer so only really uncovered the outer whorl and shaped the matrix. But liked the curves I got on it , only got the Dremel a few weeks ago after watching your electric engraver video . I was using a point from DNSONS on that piece , but I do have the one from Zoic too I I was using that on the multi block to try and get the rock off the ammonites but I think it's just too sticky on that piece

Very nice work, glad to see a dremel buddy sharing his art, everyone is just using those expensive air pens. The problem is that I cant use dremel for long because it makes my hand numb after a while, does this happen to you too?
@Treasurehunter11001
@Treasurehunter11001 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew , I was quite surprised at how much you can do with the Dremel without having to buy a more expensive air pen. I sometimes wear a glove to help with the vibration but that does make it a bit more awkward to control . I mainly just hold it lightly
