Nice work. If you want an even glassier finish you might try to us aluminum oxide on a felt wheel.

thank you I am new and this just answered a lot of questions, except i am getting nervous about the dust. I am not sure i really understand your set up to help with the rock dust.
@thebroadhouse
@thebroadhouse 4 ай бұрын
you are right to be concerned about the dust! It can cause fatal lung problems. what we do for dust mitigation depends on the tool we're using to polish and whether we're indoors or outdoors. if we're inside using the polisher on the table, we have a shop vac with a HEPA filter. we put the hose opening through the dish tub that surrounds the polishing disc, with a small desk fan blowing towards the shop vac hose opening. we also wear a half-face respirator and safety glasses. if we're using the Dremel, we have a box fan with an air filter taped to the intake side. I'll link a video for that below. we also would be wearing the respirator and safety glasses. if we're outside, we'll have a fan blowing the dust away from our faces while wearing the half-face respirator and glasses. we keep the stones wet and rinse them often throughout every stage to preserve tools and help keep the dust down. thank you for asking great questions!

How long did it take to sand it to a shine? How many diamonds-head drill bits? How many sanding heads? Trying to get a handle on the amount of work. Thanks.
@thebroadhouse
@thebroadhouse 10 ай бұрын
I think I spent around 10 minutes per sanding disc stage. less than one diamond bit, and also less than one sanding disc per stage. harder stones/crystals will take longer and use up more materials. 💜

@@thebroadhouse thank you for the details. At least I have an estimate, an idea, of how much work it takes. Wife took me rock hounding this week. And I’m like, “what’s next?” She sent me this video. Now I know LOL

@@thebroadhouse so I attempted to polish a piece of light green fluorite. I got some chipping but it was going ok. Started polishing it. And then I freaking dropped it on the concrete and took enough of a chip that I need to go back to the sanding stage. We were working outdoors as it’s a lot of particles in the air and the dermal can be very loud. Last night we went rock hounding at a fluorescent pile. The black light makes them shine like lava, freaking awesome. So today to put into buckets to soak and clean. Next weekend to start the sanding I hope.

@triciac.5078 chipping is normal for the low grits on fluorite but once you get up higher they'll come out. I've dropped and chipped pieces in the past it sucks 😔 one time I had to open up the shop vac with the hepa filter and dig out a piece of lapis I was working on 😫 that's amazing you're able to find so much! and using the uv to help that's very smart. I bet it looks so pretty. we're down here in Florida so it's mainly shells and coral. Whereabouts are you rockhounding?

no I wouldn't consider this knapping. from what I understand, knapping is striking the stone with something to break pieces off.
