You're missing out on the bigger picture. It's not entirely about her being "just a mermaid", that honestly sounds like a bland excuse to disregard the whole thing. It's the fact that her character was originally white to begin with, but people revamped it into being that of "our own" race, which is black, because they -care- about "diversity" and "representation." If you're going to go down the route of making a black Disney queen whose story line is in that of the ocean, then at least make a fresh character, or add a black princess to the story as a main character to the plot, that to me makes more sense than revamping a god damn character. It doesn't matter how many times you watch it, you're not going to get that same shine compared to the original, nor will you see it in the same light. Of course I can't speak for everyone when I say that, but it sure does apply to me. Also, regarding girls like Princess Tiana, Moana, and Jasmine, they're valid for remade appearances too, right? Because they're "human", so they can be any race yeah? Saying that "She's a mermaid so she can be any race." as if that's a valid argument.

People keep acting like changing her from white to black is empowering when it isn’t. Letting her be raceswapped is allowing people to raceswap any character and black characters are included as well. I don't get the whole concept of taking an original character who's supposed to be a certain specific skin color, and revamping their appearance into that of another race. I don't get it, nor do I like it. If you're going to go down that route, then at least make a new/original character. Like, the black Mermaid princess? I honestly can't see her character in the same light as I did with the original, plus it won't make any sense. Moana, lovely. Pocahontas, lovely. Princess Tianna, lovely. To any random person who agrees with the black mermaid, how would you feel if someone re-made those characters, into being that of a different race? It would be upsetting, wouldn't it? And it would cause an up-roar on Twitter. It's actually hella fraudulent and hypocritical if you're only looking at 1 side of the picture, but eh. If you like it, then fair enough, I can't hate anyone for that, but at the same time, I can't agree on it either. I also don't agree with the whole turning an original strictly straight character, into that of a homosexual one, it doesn't make any sense.

First cat woman is not black to begin with. She supposed is a colorblind character. Meaning she can be anything. She has been African American, white/Italian, and even Hispanic. So that’s not really a good comparison. Second Ariel is technically danish. Also the sea witch really wasn’t involved in the original work. Third I’m AA and personally hate the idea of a black mermaid. Now given that I won’t go to the extreme people been doing. And I want to congratulate Halle and wish her luck.
