Dressage is highly athletic, and even the most well-balanced dressage horse can benefit from regular bodywork. As your horse progresses to higher levels, new areas of tension may "show up" and need special attention. Regular bodywork is essential if you want to keep your horse balanced, soft, and moving freely.
One key area to focus on is maintaining looseness and flexibility between the occiput and atlas in the poll. If tension builds up there, it can affect movement throughout the horse's body. As the neck, shoulders, and withers strengthen, it's also important to address those areas to support progress.
A helpful technique, after releasing tension in the poll with the Lateral Cervical Flexion, Head Up, and Head Down Techniques, is the Crestline Wiggle, which releases tension in the nuchal ligament. Watch Jim’s video where he explains how to do this technique and why it’s so important.
