When your horse hasn't been jumping a lot and has never done free jumping I would definitely do a line with hat least three jumps getting higher with every obstacle. Also poles on the ground help to keep a rhythm and some horses do also find confidence in them. Really like your videos though, always funny and entertaining!

Next time when you freejump with Chase you’d better make like a small cross then 1 stride so 7.20m in between and then a vertical which is a little higher then the cross and then 7.40m in between and a oxer/vertical which will be the last fence☺️ Really nice video Matt harnacke

My trainer had a story of one of her top hunter jumper horses. He was trained with some of the best trainers so he’s pretty high up there. But anyways, he was a dressage horse with my trainers friend. He once got out of his stall at a dressage show, and jumped two Mercedes. He was then sold to some of the top trainers in the sport, and then my trainer. He’s (I don’t know about it anymore) but he was the only horse to win at all three top qualification shows including Devon. I just think it’s still crazy how he jumped two cars for pure joy, and made it an entertaining story around the horse shows.

Tip for others: Help the horse by putting one pole on the ground where you would like the horse to start the jump, it really helps fresh horses to make the jump, especially when it gets higher. It helps them get the right distance to get over. You can also build the jump with the pole a little over the ground and lifting it slightly at the same time as the jump is raised. Just to make it easier to figure out how to get the right distance and angle to go over.. In the wild, jumping is very unnatural, because it makes a high risk for the horse to get hurt, and therefore a easy prey. They will rather slow down and just walk over, go around, go in and out and so on.. If no other choices are possible, they will jump. And when learned to jump, they might also do it for fun. But not too much, because it does hurt their front legs. Also, the horse gets tired, it legs start to hurt, so when you start low and do higher and higher, it might be to tired in the end to actually make it, or it doesn't won't to, because the landing hurts. So just do it slowly over several weeks, when the horse has understood the technique and can measure distance for when to jump. It is ready to go higher. Then you can rise it pretty much in one session, but don't do to many high jumps, it isn't beneficial to their legs.. Better to focus on technic..

Striding was way off, maybe you could have a couple more jumps in a row, a cross, one stride to an smallish upright, then one stride to a pole, then one stride to an oxer. That will really make him understand and put him in the right spot! Loved the video!

Armored Wings Striding helps the horse though, especially if it’s the first time and 1-3 jumps in a row with 1-2 strides in between helps them get a good flow. :)
