Being raised by “old money” grandparents, we dressed in simple, quality, timeless clothes that “wore like iron” and could be let out or taken in as needed. Fewer, better made but unremarkable clothes paired with great great grandmother’s pearls or your grandfather’s watch took you anywhere. Trends might be observed in swim trunks or a tie. As clothes depreciate you wanted them to last as long as possible so you weren’t throwing more money away every year.

I think he has the same point. Don't buy things that decrease in value, don't try to lift your status by seeking other people's attention. I used to be a lot with rich people and they dress casually, you wouldn't really notice that they are 2-10x more expensive but last for a damn lifetime and also feel pleasant on you. Clothes are one of the first things you should consider after your own health, food and exercise.

I'm with you. I guess I'm just getting older now, cause I don't give a rip about the "kids" dressing style nowadays either. And all the blacques think Kevin Samuels was a snazzy dresser! He looked like a CLOWN, his suit sleeves were TOO SHORT, too much cuff showing, his pants too tight and too short, and all-in-all it was all too tight. And his accessories garish. The trend today is narrow lapels and skinny ties again, as it was in, what, 1983? I hated it then and I hate it now. I'll stick with my Oxxford, Brooks Brothers, Armani, BOSS, etc. IN WOOL, SILK and cashmere. They are TIMELESS and BEAUTIFUL.

This underestimates the fine detail work that goes in to dressing in the modern collegiate/ivy/old money style. "Old money" as a costume in the current trend cycle sticks out like a sore thumb as someone who is trying too hard, but don't pretend that the wealthy don't communicate through fashion (EVERYONE does). For anyone who wants real advice that doesn't come from someone who has been steeped in the world so long that he doesn't see it, there are a few steps you should follow. 1) Quality and fitment. Don't buy what is in trend, focus on more timeless cornerstone pieces that have subdued small non logo details that allow you to stand out in the crowd of button ups with alterations made to ensure that you wear your clothes and that your clothes don't wear you. However, there is a line where you look TOO sharp (i.e glitsy detailing, clothes that are too sharply tailored and uncomfortable for daily wear, etc.). You want to make sure you actually wear these clothes enough to not look like a first year analyst who was taken to brooks brothers by his rich grandpa last week as a graduation present, so use the clothes as intended. 2) Clothes for a place, clothes for a time. Have outfits that match different occasions or activities. Understand your desired industry and observe the dress codes and limitations in different areas they hang out in. And I am not talking about guessing or going based off of pictures, I mean actually go to these places and observe. Does upper management wear golf clothes to the office? What do the new staff wear? What brand of vests do they wear in the fall? Is that because of a company activity culture or do they just hand them out for free? I could go on for hours, but stress the details and filter them down over time. If you think I am being over the top, remember that Nick went to Cornell. They implicitly teach you these guidelines through exposure that working class non ivy Americans don't have casual access to.

Buying decent, well made classic style clothes that will last you a long time, never go out of fashion and fit your style is good. Buying "old money" style clothes because it's a tiktok trend this summer is silly. I think there's blurred lines in this trend between the two, but I think it's one of the better trends as it puts classic, timeless pieces into the spotlight that aren't subject to the same fast fashion to landfill cycles.

Looking good is much more about the style of the clothes and less about the label. Most rich people are going to think you look pretty stupid when you're just running around in a Gucci hoodie, with the logo plastered all over the place. It makes you look like a tourist buying the souvenir merch. Instead look for items that are fitted, solid color, and maybe have changes in texture. I dont get this depreciable assets statement. A large portion of depreciable assets provide value to the owner through many channels(i.e. efficiency and convenience). I understand luxury goods like boats and fashion are terrible purchases, but it seems like a mass generalization. For example, cars don't appreciate, but I know most wealthy people own cars (it doesn't matter whether they're expensive or not at a minimum its $40,000)

here’s a better idea, you should be dressing the way YOU like, not to dressing for other people.

Nobody cares what you wear. Watches are not an asset they will become a deprciating assest. Nobody uses them anymore because everyone has a phone instead.

whats the point here, that rich people dont wash their clothes (maybe why they are all so smelly)? or that rich people support thrifting clothes? ;)
