Doc: Many say that one of the things that makes a great cigar great is the complexity and flavor transitions. Can you explain, or even make a video, that shows what blenders do to achieve this? You are the expert! Thanks

It's a 5-country blend with Habano wrapper from Connecticut USA, Mexican Sand Andres binder and a filler of Brazil Mata Fina, Dominican Piloto Cubano and a leaf from Jalapa and Esteli in Nicaragua.

The costs vary per group, I think. So, I'm not sure. Available dates for 2014 are on the website along with an email address for more specifics.

I don't really have the video footage to demonstrate the different techniques for achieving complexity or balance. In short, if you watch the buncher, you will see that he tears the leaves at the tip and the butt and redistributes those leaves within the bunch. The tip of the tobacco leaves carries the most strength and punch (i.e., nicotine) because the veins carrying the nutrients converge at the tip. So, if you want more punch at the beginning, you redistribute the tips of the leaves (cont.)

Thanks for the props on the video. I don't know what kind of availability to cigars you have in the UK, but if you are just getting started, I would recommend that you start with your local retail shop and ask the retailer to recommend a light to medium bodied cigar with a lot of flavor and some natural tobacco sweetness. Nothing flavored, though. Buy two of each kind so you can give them more than one try before deciding. Also, take notes on your experience so you can narrow down what you like.

... at the foot of the cigar. If you want more punch at the end of the smoke, you redistribute the tips at the head of the cigar. Obviously, if you want more balance in the smoke, you redistribute the tips evenly across the bunch.
