Except you're very much so omitting a lot of info, but what can you expect from the English. first of all it wasn't ships with the loans it was ships that were retreating from the "Dutch fleet" that was in England created by the Dutch sea beggars. There was one ship specifically that was under the loan, and they got stranded in England, found and attacked by the sea beggars. Also the loan was just gold given by Genoa to Spain. Genoa and Spain were very big allies, even during the thirty year war that happened later.

Well, the French lost almost 2 million people in WW1, and had almost 4.3 million wounded on top of that. They may have been occupied in WW2, but lost "only" ~570000, so I'm not sure WW2 was actually worse for them. Similiarly for the British, they also lost way more people in WW1. WW2 was of course worse in total, but more of that is due to Russia (not that they didn't loose a lot in WW1 either, but certainly even more in WW2), and the more serious inclusion of a real Asian theater. WW1 was really not much of a "World" war, when it comes down to it. Sure, German colonies were fought, but there weren't a lot of them, or a lot of troops stationed there. I mean the Japanese lost 300 soldiers in WW1 and China lost up to 20000 civilian workers, and had no soldiers involved in the war at all.
