My understanding is that the theory of the Earth being flat was only believed by a small minority of the Roman population, but it was one of the few theories left in the wreckage after the fall of Rome, meaning it was picked up by medieval scientists to translate and Propagate. Also my history professor at college said that the Earth being flat was a rumor spread by the Carthaginians so that the Romans would be too afraid to sail out of the Mediterranean.
