Some people refer to this album as country core(they are from Tennessee)but I fucking love it. Phil’s vocals are phenomenal(yes it’s just Phil) you need to listen to The Valley this is a continuation of that. Phil’s dad dropped dead in front of him from a heart attack when he was a kid and his mother remarried a pretty suspect dude who got her addicted to drugs she was also schizophrenic she died in 2000. This and the Valley are his albums with him coming to terms with those things.

This wouldn't be an album I would recommend you personally, not the usual type of stuff you gravitate to, as you said near the beginning, very meat and potatoes deathcore. That being said, I do like this album, but not for the heavy moments, it's the melodic moments that get me, I'm actually not a big old Whitechapel fan, not for me (even more meat and potatoes deathcore). I think a much much better deathcore album for you to check out would definitely be The Contortionist - Exoplanet, Veil of Maya - Eclipse, or Born of Osiris - The Discovery, much more groovy/djenty deathcore.
@Kenjames10
@Kenjames10 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah when it comes to blast beats for me it just depends on the riff if it is catchy or not. One deathcore band that can consistently write some catchy fast riffs on top of blast beats is Thy Art Is Murder. Fit For An Autopsy as well. They got the groove on top of that so I think you might like those bands.

I was really excited when this album came out; but some of the elements feel out of place. (Mostly bc of how familiar I’am with their early work). But as a Prog guy I picked up on the Tool influence. What they did I believe was executed well ofc. It’s not for me, I’m more of the blast beat guy when it comes to deathcore. Check out “The Valley” from Whitechapel Drew. Sick grooves on that record. Keep it up my brotha!

Great review Drew. Being a metal head music enthusiast can be a little isolating to say the least! None of my friends or family are into it. These reviews are like throwing on an album with a buddy and just chilling; I appreciate that. Been loving this album since it came out, and I really enjoyed their previous album. Also, really appreciate that you'll expand on what's not working for you on a track. Too many reviewers come off as blind hypemen(women) unless something is just blatantly awful.

Funny how you mentioned Opeth, as Phil has stated on a livestream that Mikael has been a huge inspiration and calling him one of the best vocalist. Another band that he mentioned is Katatonia which is a bit melodic and obscure ish band, he was heavily inspired in this album by both Opeth and Katatonia and other bands that are not very well known

I see Kin as a gateway album on two levels. Firstly it's a gateway album for music fans that listen to it and get into heavier music as a result. While secondly it's a gateway for Whitechapel to get even more melodic. The second half of Kin is 60-70% clean vocals with two tracks that are entirely clean vocals. I feel like that's a deliberate choice on their behalf, and it feels like that might be the direction they plan to head on a future album. I'm curious to see where they go next as a band as Phil Bozeman loves his clean vocals these days.

Not sure if you're still reading comments on this or not, but when you say "blast beats" are you just talking about the double bass? I'm not trying to knock or be an "elitist" but fast double bass does not equal blast beat. It's just fast double bass. Most heavier metal has that. Blast beats is what you'd commonly find in a song by Lorna Shore. They are LOADED with blast beats but that kinda comes with the death core territory. If I missed it, I missed it but A Blood Soaked Symphony doesn't have a single blast beat in it from what I've ever heard. Again, I'm not trying to knock. Just asking for clarification so I can understand you better. Edit: see now in the song "to the wolves" you correctly pointed out a true blast beat. And I can understand you not being fond of them. Is it the double time snare that turns you off?

I've been really excited to see your take on this. One of the few albums I'd call a masterpiece. I can kinda see what you mean by your take on blast beats. While I love them, I do prefer double kicks with slower snares (creates a really epic feeling -- i.e. A lot of Gojira's heaviest songs). That said, Kin is probably my favorite track, no contest.

Insterestingly enough, while Whitechapel is a deathcore band, this record is very borderline progressive tech death to me in some aspects. Lost Boy has some crazy Decapitated vibes and the riffs, bridges, and even the solos are very much death metal influenced rather than deathcore influenced. To me is such a cool blend of styles. Love this record front to back! Edit: also, this entire record lyrically speaking is a concept story of the vocalist’s actual real life struggle of being in denial and struggling to accept his parents deaths. Really strong themes all throughout once you revisit the record knowing that

I’ve never really been one for deathcore in general either but my old band opened up for them in 2011 and they were just SO heavy, tight, and energetic live that it was impossible not to appreciate what they brought to the table. Ridiculous drumming, powerful vocals, and a ton of stage presence.

I’ve been pretty inactive musically for some time now, but man those were good days for metal. Because it's not important. The night is lit From your reaction to I Will Find You, I expect you to completely dislike Lost Boy and A Bloodsoaked Symphony. They're the heaviest tracks on the album. I still feel the same about blast beats. I have been into more heavy stuff lately so I am getting used to it, but I do believe that a lot of bands overdo it just for the sake of "heavy", and it can get very unbearable sometimes. Btw: A good recommendation that I know you would love is anything from Polaris, you could check one of their singles from their lastest album and maybe later you could check the full album if you like it, or just listen to it by yourself, ik you will fucking love it. that snare pattern and solo where you feel awkward i think is cuz when you "headbang" vertically i think? idk When that part started i think i get in the sorta "head shake" headbang for lack of a better description fuck mate... idk how to help you find the groove youre seeking. im also a bassist and kinda always listen more to the syncopation of the drummers in metal and really appreciate these sections layered with other polyrhythmic sections.
