Other than they are both Progressive.... Opeth and Tool very different as you likely are getting a hint at. Opeth has so many different styles. I describe listening to their songs as consuming a five course meal. People for some reason recommend Ghost of Perdition to people as their starting point. It isn't always a win for new listeners. Listen to more Opeth it will snag you at some point. It is the same singer, guitarist, composer Mikael Akerfeldt. Check out some live from Roundhouse Tapes, Live in Sydney (Moshcam), Royal Albert Hall, etc. Their last three albums (most recent) he no longer growls but honestly the best stuff is when he mixes clean and growl. So many textures. The new stuff is more prog rock and would be very comfortable if transported to the late 60s early 70s as part of the Prog Rock and Psychedelic movement. Most people, myself included, will recommend songs from before that change.
@Taunic
@Taunic 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Ghost of Perdition was one of the ones that had to grow on me and now it's one of my favorites. But with new Opeth listeners it can be too much to take in until they are familiar with their other works. Seems like he enjoyed it though so I have a feeling he is going to get sucked into this band.

A pretty fun thing with Opeth, IMO, is that they've gone from a heavier death metal sound to almost pure progressive rock now. Their latest album was released in two versions, one in English and one in Swedish (I prefer the latter but then I am Swedish myself), and it's a masterpiece of old school progressive rock. I have to say that Ghost Reveries is probably my favourite album of theirs, though, it's really smack dab in the middle of death metal and that good good mellotron-heavy prog rock. "Harlequin Forest" from Ghost Reveries would probably serve as a good counterpoint to the heaviness of "Ghost of Perdition", but "The Grand Conjuration" stands as my #1 track ever, regardless of band, when it comes to "metal-ness". It's just so fucking heavy and perfectly balanced with calmer parts.

_"That's disgusting"_ 🤣🤣 yeah man, just you wait! There is A LOT to Opeth, a lot of different styles weaved in and out. So much incredible music. And yea, that's Mikael singing both clean and death growls. His voice was the first death metal growl I fell in love with. It's buttery smooth and evil as fuuuuuuuck. The album *Blackwater Park* is a top-to-bottom masterpiece. You would dig the title track (it's an Opeth classic) as well as *Dirge For November, The Drapery Falls,* and *The Funeral Portrait.* You would also really like the album *Still Life* and songs like *Benighted* or *The Moor.* Holy shit dude, this another Tool-sized rabbit hole you could fall down. So I just randomly stumbled upon this, your, video (probably due to tag “Opeth”) and I’m staying (and subscribing) just for the pure reaction you had - that song always gives me chills and just takes me to a different place.. It’s amazing, I really hope you have experienced them more after this video 🤘🏻🙏🏻🖤

You've started your Opeth journey with the same song that I did and you are in for a treat, man. I'd say that not only songs, but whole albums are masterpieces in their discography. My holy trinity of choice would be Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation.

This song is so brilliant...subtle details like the vocals lowering in octave by stanza, combined odd time signatures, phenomenal guitar riffs, welcome to Opeth!

@@peyman4357 Wouldn't say 'Blackwater Park' is best for first getting into Opeth, it's their heaviest song. I'd say songs like 'Burden' and songs off of 'Damnation' is good for first timers.

So glad you liked opeth, definitely gotta do more because their discography is filled with masterpieces. I would suggest doing “blackwater park” next, probably the song/album that put them on the map. No doubt in part due to their collaboration with Steven Wilson (speaking of this is a great opportunity to start reacting to Steven Wilson/porcupine tree)
