A sufficient condition is when A and B are simultaneously diagonalisable, i.e., A = T^(-1) D1 T and B = T^(-1) D2 T. where D1 and D2 are diagonal matrices. Then, AB = T^(-1) D1 D2 T = T^(-1) D2 D1 T = BA Note however that this condition is sufficient but not necessary. For example, if we take a nXn non-diagonalisable matrix A and nXn identity matrix I , then AI = IA , ie, A and I commute but A is non-diagonalisable
