This is the best video you have done. I spent a couple years working in a shop that had a bunch of old flywheel presses that were originally designed for water power. I loved those old things. Those presses ran for well over 100 yrs until the Chinese started turning out finished products for less than our cost for raw stock. They all ended up getting scrapped.

Hey thanks Jeff. I would have loved to see the old flywheel presses. The machines themselves are works of art. It's sad they are getting scrapped. 👍

Hello Dr G ! Simply put, this video, to any coin collector, is gold ! But, my friend, as you probably remember I am a Morgan Silver Dollar collector. Your video is more than gold ! Since our last encounter, I have completed my Business Strike collection of 104 coins. I have only upgraded one of my Carson City Morgan Dollars. I think You remember to whom and where my original coin found a home. I continue to upgrade my collection, The two beautiful Morgan Dollars you have shown, are high on my upgrade list. Thank You ! for all your hard work, time and research in the making of this wonderful video. It is very much appreciated by me ! :-))

I knew you would like this one. :) Congratulations on completing a great collection, definitely a rare accomplishment. But more importantly your reputation for being extremely generous is carved in stone as far as I'm concerned. I'll never forget watching that video when Ian realized exactly what you had given him. That was worth much more than the coin will ever be worth. Your legacy is safe with me. Thanks for the kind words. Be well my friend.

It's been a while but... wow! What a way to get yourself started on a Sunday morning! Bowl of porridge, strong mug of coffee and twenty minutes in the company of Dr G!!!! Stunning coins (jeez man, where do you find them?) and those old photos transported me right back to the 19th century. Absolutely brilliant video, doc. I had no idea what a work horse that old press had been - it certainly earned its pension!!! Thanks, big lad; great to see you back!

I went from son of a coin dealer, to hobbyist, to collector, to working for a dealer, to running my own coin and collectibles business. When I can, I very much enjoy watching peoples videos, when they are done appropriately. I have to say, this is among the best video i've ever watched from a youtuber. Superbly done, incredible information, extremely articulate, and easy to understand. The videos of the working press and photos alone are scholarly. I sent it to my father and he said he watched it three times just to absorbed the information about the minting process he was not aware of (the stretching of the metal sheets). Keep up the videos!! This was simply excellent. THANK YOU for making this

Love your vids man. Im very new to all of this, and I am learning so much just watching your grading vids. There is a lot of benefit in seeing the final grades after a careful examination from our point if view of each coin. There's a wealth of information and enjoyment in listening to the old folks. You just have to learn how to direct their attention and not let it wander too much. There is a definite skill in successfully interviewing older people. It's a shame that these old folks are not appreciated more in the present society. I give you credit my friend.

Hey buddy, yeah, I was pushing it with the length, but all my stuff ends up being so long I don't really worry about it. I just keep rolling LOL. I'm going to shorten up the next one a little. Maybe 15 min. Since it will be a continuation video anyway. There is so much stuff I would like to share with each coin, even with the length of time I spend already, there is so much info I'm leaving out. I have been blessed with a long attention span. But I know most people can't watch much more that 4 or 5 min. LOL Nice to hear from you my friend.

Thanks G. Great video, new sub. I appreciate the history. I recently sold back to the bank I bought it from, a Morgan dollar, that had to be a "test dollar". To insure the die was destroyed. If it hasn't been melted down then theres a chance that Morgan, with the big X cut across that ladys cheek, is still here in Europe somewhere. Same old story. Didn't know what I had when I had it. I thought" Who could do that to such a nuce coin?" I now know better. I think it was 1873 too. Thanks for sharing.

I just found your channel & subbed on the spot ! I watched & re-re-re watched this video and took LOTS of notes. I was lucky enough to find a good amount of cool coins metal detecting. I've found coins before some ok but nothing to get too excited about till now after finding a bunch of Morgan Silver Dollars and a few more since finding the first ones. Some are tarnished abit but most of the ones that were wrapped up & all & in a box are super shiney. Found them in an open field where a house from the 1800's used to be and a few other homes that was torn down in the 1930's.

I must say EXCELLENT historical video. Especially enjoyed learning more about the CC mint presses. It’s on my list of places to visit. I concur with others below I thought that 94 Morgan would cut a 64. Either or still a great coin!

Being a novice at coin collecting, I enjoyed your video tremendously, especially on the topic of the Carson City Mint Museum. It helps in my appreciation, understanding and working knowledge of my new hobby, which broadens with each passing day. Looking forward to your next video and the education lesson that's bound to accompany it. Take care.

Great presentation as usual. The Morgan's you showed with the parallel lines are very interesting. I have a Morgan with these lines running through the breast feathers of the Eagle. I have wondered what the story is concerning them, and how they were formed. As you noted, being that the lines are parallel suggests they were not formed after leaving the Mint. I do believe PCGS doesn't hold those kinds of lines against the overall grade. The activity on the north of the reverse may have led to the MS-63 grade. Beautiful piece!

The history of Carson City is really something. Imagine so much silver the Government plopped a mint down right next to it. Imagine the excitement of the people who discovered that load.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 5 жыл бұрын
An amazing find. As usual, the discoverers got very little by selling out early for what turned out to be ridiculously low amounts. The Comstock load turned out to be a giant chunk of silver. The town of Virginia city looks about the same now as it did back in 1870.

Hey Anthony, nice to hear from you. I assume you are in Australia, (maybe not) but shipping your coins from there will probably be pretty expensive. Otherwise the grading companies claim the graders don't know who owns or submitted a certain coin at the time of grading. So sending with a dealer will only result in possibly a cheaper price, because the dealers definitly do get a great price on grading. Your expensive coins I would probably have graded mainly for authentication purposes. The actual grades are pretty subjective, so I would consider them just a ballpark opinion. You can always remove the coins from the slabs if you are displaying them in another manner. (I assume you are a collector and not a dealer). Someone elses opinion of your coins is always fun. If you can afford it that is...😃 Have fun my friend, thanks for the comment.
