After reviewing more nutritional literature the past month, I have been adding more eggs. I cooked eggs and green beans the other day. It is really fast and easy. (18 eggs, 3 pounds green beans, 4 oz rice). Eggs are the perfect protein and cheaper than most meat. I wrote bout this in my eBook "Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet"

Many clients use kibble and the stew together to decrease costs and effort. Many ,including me ,feed the stew 90% of the time. Hope you enjoy the ebook!

I bought both of your books and they are awesome!! I cooked my first homemade dog stew this weekend and my dog devoured it! She had been do sick she hasn't wanted to eat anything. Some days she doesn't even eat a whole can of food. Now, feeding time us not a problem! Thank you!

For cats chicken, chicken liver, chicken hearts 80%-90% / rice 10-20%. It is faster to boil , but more of a hassle to mix up. The crock pot blends everything. BTW 2 of my cats will eat the veggie recipe

Thats good. Transition them by feeding the crock pot food with their regular food for a week to make sure they can handle the extra fat. Feed sardines (canned), canned salmon,once weekly or cook tilapia instead of feeding the fish as treats. I recently bought big frozen sardines to feed raw and /or cook( new pet food store in town,,more raw stuff)
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
Should be at least half chicken and half veggie and rice. Be sure to add liver 4 oz, and gizzards and hearts 4oz to each batch. Substitute eggs or add as part of meat. eg 3-4 pounds chicken/ 6 eggs or 18 eggs instead of chicken once a week. Add or substitute fish also. If you rotate a bit, it will ensure great nutrition! It takes a month or so for some dogs to get used to it. Are the stools really loose on all? some? few? You can try a egg/chicken rice recipe for a week to firm those up
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
I rotate rice and sweet potatoes in with veggies. I also use fruit. I make all three 10-20% of the "batch". I feed twice daily. 4oz small dog, 8oz medium dog,12-16 large dog.

I have been making food for my dogs for years. I pressure cook mine but the ingredients are about the same. I chop up the egg shells in a coffee grinder and add them for the calcium, too. For your viewers who can, this can be canned like any other food. The largest jar should be a quart because of density. Can for 90 at the pressure required for you altitude. Great video!

Animals are very tolerant of cholesterol and fat. The Ingredients that hurt more animals are the high percentage of carbohydrates in dry food causing diabetes and obesity in some pets and allergenic grains causing chronic medical issues. (stones, crystals, seizures) in others. That's why I am so passionate about giving pet owners choices in how to feed their pets

They get ...frozen raw chicken wings, thighs, and other meaty bones 1-2 times per week. The meat , cartilage and bones really help nourish the bones and joints and keep the teeth clean

She can do without because you are feeding her the soften bones. Prozyme is a good idea. If you add chicken liver, hearts(2-4 ounces), and eggs(6) and feed sardines or herring a couple times weekly, that covers the bases. Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet has some home cooking recipes dogdishdietcom

I am SO GLAD to hear that lots of people are feeding better ingredients. I feed my dogs raw chicken wings for the calcium and joint nutrition(I also leave the slow cooked bones in, feed pork hocks, or raw meaty lamb or beef bones)

You can boil first, then slow cook. You still have to slow cook the bones for 12-20 hours till soft. If bones are present.(chicken,pork)

Chicken and rice or sweet potatoes 50/50 is a great way to start for 2 wks. Then try peas and carrots (frozen 32 oz). instead of rice. Then try eggs and rice, then eggs/ green beans. This is in the ebook Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet. If you want to home cook, check it out dogdishdietcom

I love how you let your Lab Tucker clean out the crock pot. I do the same thing with my black Lab except, I always take his collar off beforehand so his tags don't chip or crack my crock bowl. He's been eating your crockpot recipe for about 18 months now and he loves it. He's lost weight, his coat is glossy & he has so much energy. He doesn't have the stinky gas issue anymore either...Yeah! Thanks Dr. Greg.

My dogs love their home cooked food. I supplement with a good quality kibble. I cook chicken thighs, veggies, and when the food is done, I remove the bones and place in my Vitamix blender. I add broth from the crock pot and blend. When done, I add back to the food. I was brought up to believe that dogs shouldn't eat chicken bones. I'm more comfortable with this instead of bones.
@sita44884 жыл бұрын
Do add the cooked bones to the vitamix blender? Just wanted to know....thank you!
@tomevans54584 жыл бұрын
@@sita4488 Yes, I added the bones to the Vitamix and blended them with broth. The turned into a thickened broth and then poured back into the chicken/veggie mix. I actually have moved on from this recipe. I found a recipe online from The Original CrockPet Diet. Dogs have been very healthy on this. I purchased the program E-book which gives you a lot of information. Basic recipe is: 3 lbs of protein, 2 lbs veggies (squash, zucchini, green beans), 1.5 lbs veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts), 4 large carrots, 3 medium sweet potatoes, 1 can kidney beans,, 1teaspoon "Iodized" salt, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 1 teaspoon tumeric, and 2000 mg calcium (I use a powered calcium citrate product by a company called NOW). Place everything in a slow cooker (chop up veggies as necessary) and then add 2-3 cups of water. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours. Use an immersion blender or potato mashed to blend all the food to mush. Allow to cool and then add 6 tablespoons of olive oil, grape seed oil, or coconut oil. Place food in refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze unused food. Finally, if you home cook for your dog, you will need to provide a high quality multi-vitamin for your pet. No matter what quality of food you use, your dog will not get sufficient vitamins from the meal alone. I did a tremendous amount of research and found that this program works best for me and my dogs. Please note, this is a commitment of time and $, but I think the effort is worth it. Feeding your pet cheap dog food is like you eating fast food everyday. Sure, you would be full, but not very healthy. It can get very confusing reading so much of the online stuff. This program simplified the feeding approach and now has be come second nature for me to do. Good luck!

One other thing. You can use grains like rice or quinoa instead of sweet potatoes. Add 1 cup of grains about 1/2 way through the cooking process. If you use grains, add 4 cups of water at the beginning instead of 2 cups. 4 cups of water if you use grains, 2 cups of water if you use sweet potatoes.

She may only want the good stuff, but many people mix it with dry food, so they get extra oils and a moister food. Leptospirosis vaccine can cause mild to severe reactions on rare occasions. Dogs that are outside on ranches and walks in wet areas can become exposed to it. House dogs in my area have little risk. Check to see how many cases of leptospirosis have been seen in your area
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
If you use 50% meat and 50% veggies the protein/fat/ carb ration is good. You need to cook the bones till soft and feed those in the "stew". or get a balanced vitamin supplement to add to the daily portion. You can check at dogdishdietcom for the book and ebook that show you how to cook the recipes "Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet"

I have recently read that fish oil is better than flax because omegas come from "prey" and not plant. You have it and I'm sure its a benefit. I slow cook bones or feed raw chicken wings instead of the eggshells that has less joint nutrition. If dogs are not fed meaty, raw, or slow cooked bones...egg shells are acceptable
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
If dogs swallow large pieces then bones may be dangerous. Raw meaty bones supply nutrition and clean teeth naturally. Frozen chicken wings and thighs are easy ways to supply joint nutrition also and clean teeth. Slow cooked bones are easily digested and absorbed if cooked long enough and each slow cooker if different. You can cook a small batch and see if he likes it !
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
You can freeze for several weeks in portions

Signs they can't handle fat are diarrhea or vomiting after eating. If they get the runs, you can transition them with skinless boneless chicken or lowfat hamburger. You can cook the fish separately (50-60% fish with the rest veggies) or put a pound in with the chicken! You can also add 6 eggs to all batches or use 18-24 eggs instead of the meat and mix with veggies.
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
Larger bones can constipate or obstruct if too many or too large of pieces are swallowed. The chicken bones become soft and and are a good amount. Larger bones may have to be removed. When I crock oigs neck, turkey neck, turkey legs, I remove larger, harder bones. Some dogs can tolerate beef, but 30% are allergic to it. Wild game should be great, and raw is Ok. Remember to transition over a few days, especially if the dog is used to dry food
@DrGregDVM11 жыл бұрын
Sorry, just saw this post. Raw chicken bones are easily digested and rarely cause medical issues. Baked and barbecued bones may splinter when chewed. Dogs will show signs of nausea, constipation,or diarrhea if there are problems. Hope she's OK!

Depends on the cats. Mine will eat the food "as is" but my one cat, emma, still will not eat it all the time. If processed, she may do better with it. Some cats like it juicer or drier, depending on their preferences. It can be blended or processed however the cats like it best.

Thank you Dr. Martinez! I have invested today in a slow cooking crock pot. One of of my cats died three months ago from what I believe was a heart attack and / or blood clot. He was overweight and I feel that I failed him by not putting more effort in adding more variety of foods. They ate primarily Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry food. Since Angel died I started feeding his sister - Dawn wet Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Wellness. Since I watched your video I bought the crock pot, invested in air purifier (Dawn had an asthma attack yesterday and is on BP meds). I will slow cook for her and add probiotics and wild salmon oil as well as train her how to walk on a leash. That is uncommon I know but I need to get her to move more. She doesn't move much outside or inside. Thank you for inspiring me to provide my remaining baby with better nutrition. I already spent thousands on her and feel that excellent nutrition and exercise will prolong her life and make her a happy kitten. She just turned 10 years old and I am hoping to have her for another 10 (at least). Also, it is amazing how Tucker looks at you on this video with those eyes with so much love. I read that he passed away. I am very sorry. It is so painful to loose much beloved fur baby. He was one lucky puppy to have had you in his life.

I usually stick with half and half , but often vary as much as 80/20 meat to veggies depending on the ingredients I have. Some pet owners feed less meat and fat and rice to heavy dogs 40/60 for weight loss. Active dogs may need more meat and rice for the extra calories. Bones in the fish get soft faster, you may only need to cook for 8 hours

When I 1st got them I didn't know better thought all dog food was the same so I would get whatever was on sale. For a while I had thought their bad skin & constant itching was fleas but it was the darn food all along.
