Drift Ghost HD review

Working on getting my license here in Sweden, and looking at getting the Ghost for insurance and fun purposes. I also have to say I have found all of your videos extremely helpful! They have helped me work on my riding skill. I have also noticed that my instructor seem to work similarly to you when it comes to instructing pupils. Keep it up!

I've watched plenty of Ghost videos these past few days because even though I have two Hero 2's, I want another option. The way you approached this video is genius because out of all the ones I've watched, yours was the most practical and informative one that registered! Excellent review Russ, the picture was much clearer than in previous videos. I have been using a Contour ROAM for about a year and it also features the rotatable lense as well as a red laser aiming pattern to ensure your filming angle is correctly adjusted. The big drawback with the Contour device however is the front facing mic with no external mic jack. Good work.

I've corrected it with an annotation, thanks. That's a good use for tag but if you crash whilst practising and get hurt it's still unlikely you'll remember to hit tag and will still lose the footage.

So I bought a Drift HD Ghost the other day (using your discount code, thank you very much). Within 2 days of it being delivered, I saw someone rob a jewellery store as I was cycling through Portsmouth and the camera was confiscated by the police as evidence! I got it back of course. But I was planning to catch drivers whilst cycling or motorbiking, not thieves!

Hi, I have a Gopro "chesty mount" which does a similar thing. The only problem is if I want to focus on something I can't as the camera is fixed whilst on the helmet I can just look at what I want. Thanks for the tip. :-)

Mine has fogged up too. May be nothing to do with waterproofing, there could have been damp getting into it under normal conditions. It soon clears.

They've certainly come on from the days of the dustbin sized 170 model. Really impressed with this. Only time will tell on the reliability.

I think the mounts are quite fragile and the cameras will simply break off. I've seen a couple of accidents where the camera goes rolling down the road.

I agree. The Sony has excellent low light quality but the disadvantages of that cam outweigh this.

If the cam is connected to a power source it will run as long as you like, limited only by the memory card. I recommend 32gb cards (you may need 2 or 3 for that length of time)

The rotating lens needs to be tight to keep it waterproof. Once you've set it you shouldn't need to move it unless you use multiple mounts. Not sure about the pairing, maybe change the channel it's on and see if that helps.

It does make it noisier, I also noticed the extra weight at first but soon got used to it. I feel it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind knowing everything's being recorded.

Well impressed with the wide view you can see so much. I have just started to use the earlier version (Drift x170) have had to do a mod on the microphone as when talking you couldn't really make out what was being said unless i had stopped at a set of lights etc. So now with the MOD i can now here what i say and no or very little noise from the weather. Great v-log..

Great little cam mate. Does what it's sposed to do and just makes life easier than almost any of the other helmet cams. You already mentioned the low profile and colour and stuff, just another bonus to using one. I like the new Go pro's...I do, but this is the one I would buy if I was in the market. I had the same problem with a "Borrowed" copy of Powerdirector 9. So I PUCHASED powerdirector 10 and it came with a patch. Hope this helps.

It charges your Drift battery whilst it runs off the external one. Fantastic unit. I never run out of battery life now! Go get one :-)

I'd use the rule if it's going on the helmet the Drift is neater, on the bike, the Gopro is slightly clearer. Also, have a look at my "a guide round Donington park, my fastest lap" That was filmed with the gopro hero 2 and external mic.

Excellent. I use the Hero 2 on the side of my helmet and after a while I get fed up with the extra drag. If I were to VLOG, I'd also have to record sound separately - so this would be a good alternative, if a little expensive.

Does mounting on your helmet reduce the safety features. If you come off and the cameras hits the ground does that focus the impact on one spot for example? Peter in Glasgow.

I had issues with my new Ghost HD camera ,got in touch with Ross Martin at Action Cameras on Monday he arrange for the Camera to be pick up and checked out,receive new replacement Camera on Friday. No charge, how is that for service

lol. 1080p is a little bit of a gimmick at the mo really as you only really get that from Blu-Ray. Look at my Gopro on this review, that's on the 720p setting. 60 FPS is good if you're doing something in slow mo but if that's not a priority, it's a sort of gimmick. Gonna try the Drift on 720p next time, see how it is.

I tried this on the Gopro Hero2 and was REALLY disappointed with the results. This seems better quality than my other tests but I think you're right, it's probably a glorified zoom.

Hi Russ.. What settings do you use for day and night? exp 0 and +1? I seem to get very bright sky during the day which can ruin the scene. Night time isnt to bad. Cheers, Ed
