Drift must have been stuck in Japan for some time after landing. Long enough for him to go through the internet and begin loving and respecting the Japanese culture. He even changed his armor and his own face which all cybertronians can do. Drift changed his face to a more human looking face. He must’ve figured out how to become a triple-changer at some point and possibly flew across the Pacific to the U.S. This is what I like to think what happened.
