I like to visit that fort and experience the history. Nice drone footage from there!

It was an incredible tour! Be careful if you fly a drone there, though - it’s technically banned there, but I didn’t realize it at the time. The park ranger gave me permission to fly, so I was none the wiser until viewers here filled me in on the local regulations 🤷‍♂️

Absolutely amazing, thanks for sharing and providing so much information. I stumbled on an email from CAA "Beluga Summer Safari" ($7k per person for 6 days trip incl flight from To), sounded interesting but sure seems excessive $$, then I stumbled on your video. Gonna look into planing a trip myself.

DON'T PAY RIPOFF AGENTS! They'll likely just arrange the same trip for the couple hundred bucks that I paid and pocket thousands for themselves. Instead, reach out to Sea North Tours in Churchill - my guide Alex will set you up & show you the time of your life! Here's his contact page: www.seanorthtours.com/personnel/peter-sandler/ And his Instagram: instagram.com/alexdevriesphotography/?hl=en I hope this helps! Enjoy your trip north :D

The interesting thing(s) about the fort, it took 40 years to build, and it was surrendered to the French when they attacked (without a single cannon shot made). Churchill/Fort Churchill is my home town. We left in 1974 and the base was demolished in 1975. Only the airport remains. None of that tourism infrastructure was there in the '70s.

I reached out to the two main tour operators in Churchill inquiring about a polar bear safari in the fall. The one thing that's holding me back though is schlepping around in a tundra buggy for eight hours a day at a 15 mph pace on some godforsaken bumpy road.

Contact Alex at Discover Churchill - he’ll likely be able to form a custom tour for you. Or, if you go in the summer, you might be lucky enough to cross paths with one like I did (in July!).

@@DrifterDave Will do. It's my understanding that most of the permits for access the Churchill Wildlife Management Area have been granted to two tour operators. It's a bit confusing from that aspect since there are quite a few tour operators in Churchill, so who has access to the optimal polar bear spectacle?

How were you able to fly at the fort ? I thought parks canada sites were no go zones
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 4 жыл бұрын
I asked the park ranger that was guiding us and she said it was okay 🤷‍♂️ I didn’t see any signs that would indicate it was prohibited, so I took her word for it. She watched the whole flight, so perhaps there are different rules up north? I did see ‘drones prohibited’ signs at Prince Albert National Park, though!

Churchill is home to one of Canada's main ports and rail lines, but it is also a service center for the Kivalliq region of Nunavut, so I believe a lot of money flows in from that territory as well. Apart from transportation, tourism is a huge industry there. Wages are, of course, much higher than elsewhere in Manitoba, which offsets the higher cost of living.

How long to cross the Churchill River to get to the fort? I see you went in July: could you also see the northern lights ? It's on my bucket list to go some day. Would like to take train up and fly back.
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 4 жыл бұрын
I’d say it takes about 45 minutes to get to the fort by boat - at full throttle, probably more like 15 minutes. The zodiac constantly pauses for beluga sightings, so it might take a bit longer or be a bit shorter depending on the activity of the whales. The trip was taken on the last two days of July; I didn’t see the northern lights (depends on cloud cover), but I was told they were out in full force a few nights prior. My guide, Alex, takes tourists out on northern lights sighting trips on the days when they are active (you need to drive a significant distance from town to avoid light pollution). I hope you get the opportunity to go! And yes - take the train up but definitely fly back...it’s a long, slow journey. Thanks for watching! 😎

Hate to ask but they really wrangle up polar bears with helicopters?
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 4 жыл бұрын
Regularly! They are Parks Canada helicopters (the equivalent of NPS / NFS in the USA)
@kenlor71
@kenlor71 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. In fact they issue regular report of bear activity which is available online. The bears need to be relocated further north if they venture into town. The bear jail is there to keep them for a short period of time. They are given water only, then tranquilized, loaded into large nets and flown north. Some return of course.

Just a heads up if you ever return to Churchill or if anyone sees this. The entire town including the Prince of Whales fort is a No Fly Zone for drones. It's not because of any specific Parks Canada rules but because of the proximity to the Airport. You can fly ONLY if you have proper permits from Transport Canada and a license. I see you were given some wrong information on being allowed but just a heads up for the future. I know it can result in some hefty fines if your caught.
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 4 жыл бұрын
Good to know - thank you! 😬 They should really publicize that a bit better 🤷‍♂️ The DJI app reports “takeoff permitted” pretty well everywhere in town.

I’m pretty sure that from what I’ve gathered here, those are banned too (which is what I own)? I could be wrong, but based on the feedback I’ve received, I’d garner that even a kite or balloon might be problematic in Churchill 😂
@kenlor71
@kenlor71 4 жыл бұрын
I would check the rules for northern MB, but I know for a fact that the airport is about 4 miles east of the town. It sits where Fort Churchill was. ( I used to play in the plane hangers as a little kid). The fort is further west from the town, so flying a drone there has no affect on the airport restrictions. But still, check the rules.

The polar bear encounter was accidental - it wandered into town and we helped chase it across the river away from the community. It all happened during my second beluga tour. I believe Churchill Wild is the best company for bear tours 👍 Alex, my guide on the beluga tour, also works for them.

Why do you content creators insist on adding music with your videos. Its quite unessesary.
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 2 жыл бұрын
Three reasons: 1) The most successful travel vlogs make judicious use of music; 2) Sometimes the audio is pure wind noise and can be quite hard to listen to; and 3) if there is any other background music, KZbin will demonetize the video and give revenue to those artists (even if it’s only a song playing in the distance). myself, I’ve gotten a little bit better at using music a bit more intentionally and a bit more conservatively. I was only a few dozen videos in when this one was published 2+ years ago, but for what it’s worth my newer videos use music far less (apart from the intro & outro) now that I’m 150 videos in. in any case, thanks for watching.

You do not want polar bears in town, its not cruel because the alternative solution is a bit drastic, The locals have procedures in place for a reason.
