My high school bus driver was rumored to have been an amateur auto racer. He used to drive the 40 MPH highway on our route at 65 MPH. We never had an trouble on my bus because the riders were in a constant state of abject terror.

@laszlokaestner57664 жыл бұрын
Our school bus used to overtake other buses on a single carriageway road. Our driver managed it because health and safety hadn't really been invented then (1980's) and because the council school bus was a single decker with a manual box and a fairly powerful Ford engine while the local bus company used double decker Bristol VRs with a pre-selector box. There was also a relatively steep (for a bus) long straight climb which allowed him enough time to drop a couple of gears and wring the nuts off the school bus and get past before they ran out of straight road. this happened at least three times to my memory and we all thought it was really cool! It didn't happen more often because several things needed to be in place. We needed to be directly behind the service bus (which left at about the same time as us), they needed to be fully laden while we were half empty, and the road needed to be fully clear of oncoming traffic when we reached the straight part. Having a good run up also helped. The VRs needed to change down twice to climb the hill and this nearly brought them to walking pace if the driver wasn't right on it as the pre-selector could be lethargic particularly if at high mileage. The Fords meanwhile could manage about 45mph maybe a bit more with a run up, more than enough to give us the edge. I think the driver retired before they managed to sack him!

Some big names were well known in Hong Kong. The MCW Metrobus, Layland Olympian and Dennis Dragon were pretty good. Then there was everyone's favorite: the Layland Victory Mk 2. Famous because it was once the backbone of Hong Kong's bus network. Infamous because it had a front engine making driving very hot work, as well as high CG causing numerous overturn accidents.

FWIW: I _understand_ these buses are _stable._ Being from the United States however - and NOT growing up seeing these buses all the time - just by _looking at them_ I expect one to flip over in a hard turn. BTW, if you have never seen the James Bond film *_Live And Let Die_* [1973] - the first Bond film with Rodger Moore in the title role - there is a chase scene where Bond drives a double decker bus. {While I have never _ridden in_ [or on?] a double decker bus, I have _SEEN_ AT LEAST ONE. There use to be a red double decker outside the now closed _"Tussaud's London Wax Museum"_ in Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida, USA. I use to see it when I drove by there occasionally.}
@jamesfrench72992 жыл бұрын
They subject them to tilt tests and they're very stable, contrary to an understandable instinct they're not. Only if you load the top deck to the gunwhales while there's few if any on the lower level, you have a problem with risk of tipping over. That scene where the bus does a 180° skid in LALD was based on the now defunct London Transport skid pan where drivers where made to do that as part of their test! The bus used was an actual former London Transport bus.
