Drifting sandbanks with lures for bass

On a lovely sunny day in May I went bass fishing on Spirit of Arun, under the expert eye of skipper Martin Donald, and the relentless sledging of my fishing club, The Really Wrecked SAC. It turned out pretty well for me, though less well for them. Karma will get you in the end...

Exactly! It's handy running a club that's full of good company. Makes it easy to enjoy even when you have a bad day.

looks like you had a great day! I fancied a session afloat in my local Morecambe bay, but it's difficult finding a skipper to take you out for bass here, let alone fly fishers! what sort of Sandeel was that?

It was a lovely day. There aren't many skippers who cater for fly fishermen in this country. If you can find a decent shore spot though, fly fishing can be a great way to catch bass, especially as they come within inches of the shore. Mind you've I've only done it once, and only caught one bass on a fly.

I've had a few on the ribble estuary at low tide, a long risky walk across mussel beds and mud, but blanked there recently. Maybe another shot! 😊

Thanks Adrian, yes, it was my day on the bass that day. They weren’t monsters - the biggest was around 4lb. Good fun though.

The skipper banter is annoying

Most of the banter is between members of the club, but Martin does join in a bit, it's true. I'm sure that with more serious crews he's more serious - he's a really good bloke as well as a really good skipper. If you just mean that we, the club, are annoying then, yes, we are, but it gets us through the day.

When you say ‘finns’, do you mean people from Finland, or the bits fish use to swim? Either way, they’re probably not that tasty.
