Thank you for this video! Great exercises. Congrats for the webpage, what i do in my f tuba is play the Bb without pressing any valve i found that its very relaxing and also i can hear more overtones in the tuba, it would nice if you talk about this topic in one of your videos, saludos desde Chile!

Esteban, thanks for your reply! Yes!!! I really encourage tubists to use “false tones” on all keys of tuba to develop their low range. Especially for 3 or 4 valve Bb tubas. I played sousaphone at Walt Disney for 7 years and never needed 4 or 5 valves to be able to play low notes. Good advice! Thanks! I’ll be sure to do a “Pro Tips” video in the future 👍

That's really interesting that you find people need a shift to go below pedal C or Bb. Even on euphonium I have found I can get down to the D right above that without a shift, but I need a shift for pedal Db, C and double pedal Bb.

I encourage players to try and cultivate their “regular” low chops as much as their shifted low range. It’s nice to have options. But there’s a reason that those lowest notes need a little “help” when playing at maximum dynamic!

Thank you for your educational video's. I was wondering what exercises you recommend for my Miraphone BBb-86 tuba with only 3 valves from 1983. I can play the pedal C, but can't go up chromatically to the low G as on a 4 or 5 valve tuba, you know what I mean. I am lucky that I can play on a 4 valve miraphone BBb 1291 which I may borrow from the orchestra, but my own tuba is also too good and beautiful to leave alone in its case...

When playing on a 3-valve BBb tuba, I use the following fingerings for the “false tones” to come out. 0-Eb, 2-D, 1-Db, 1+2-C, 2+3-B, 1+3-Pedal Bb. These notes are not as full sounding as the notes played with long tubing, but they do work and provide fully chromatic playing on 3-valve Bb tubas.
