Quick video of me changing the speed on the Craftsman 8" Drill Press. Other drills should be similar. Size chart: www.fnal.gov/p...

Press the belt and spin the pulley! That was the aha moment for me. So much easier this way than the official method in the manual, thank you! Note that you also need to unlock the set screws that holds the motor against the housing so you can push the motor towards the front, which brings the pulleys closer together and makes the belt slacken. That screw is on the right. I don't think I saw that in the video. Mine is all rusty so I had to use a trigger clamp to squeeze the back of the motor mounting bracket and the machine's front together. Then to push it back out, I held some scrap wood against the front tip of the rod that the set screw clamps against, and tapped the scrap wood with a mallet. That pushed the motor back out and brought the pulleys apart, tensioning the belt without deforming any metal parts. Hope that helps someone.

Thanks, that's helpful, I'm a first-time drill press buyer and I thought this was how it was done but it's good to have it confirmed. Just a safety suggestion (my dad was hyper about safety), I'd recommend taking out the yellow safety insert on the power switch or unplugging it prior to working with the moving components of a power tool (just a suggestion, thanks for the video).
