Whiplash Engines and Machine

Күн бұрын

During the assembly of a 400ci small block Chevy shortblock, I discovered one of the pistons did not get completely finished from the manufacturer. They missed drilling a wrist pin oiling hole in one of the pistons. Although there are many pistons that do not have these holes, this engine will benifit from having them as it will be a powerful street machine rippin up the streets with tire shredding action. So, this video is of me drillind said hole into the piston. Check everything during an assembly of an engine.

The quality control from the manufacturers just aren't what they use to be. Good job on parts inspection. It is a must nowadays. Good machine setup.

Thanks🍻. Definitaly gotta keep an eye out for things like this. Just measuring everything is not enough. At least it was just a single hole to do and not some extreme BS to make it work or have to wait for parts to arrive. Around here we have been having quite a bit of parts shortages on top of our typical lack of parts.

I probably would have just used one side of a v block to set the angle but I don’t have a built in rotab on my mill. 😎

since you are using cap screws on those 5.7 rods, did you have to do any additional clearance to the block ?
@whiplashmachine
@whiplashmachine 3 жыл бұрын
No I did not, there was plenty of room. I did have to clearance the rods a bit to clear the roller camshaft though.

@@whiplashmachine Thanks for the reply. i'm getting ready to assemble a 406 for my Vega. my last 406 with rod bolts i had to clearance a bit. this time i'm using Scat rods with cap screws. i like your work, its excellent and professional.

@@normhodgkinson6965 the rods in this build are Scat rods also with 3/8" bolts. I just fitted a 383 with 5.7" rods using 7/16" bolts and had to make some room in the block on that one. Gonna mock up and check rod to cam clearances next and get them fitted up so I can balance rotating assembly. Should have that one wraped up soon also.

Hello, you think the 400 is a good choice over 350? I ask because I have a 400 and 350 both good builders for my 82 high Sierra.

When you checked the angle of the original hole, it was 44 degrees relative to the plane of the piston top. But when you set your table, you set it 44 degrees relative to the piston top at a right angle when it should have been 90 - 44 = 46. 2 degrees difference no big deal, just saying (unless I'm wrong then I'm sorry).
