I followed your steps and had great success. Thank you much.

I did a similar Job to the On One wheels on my Trek Farley, I used a step drill as opposed to using a hole saw, and with plenty of lube the drilling went well on both rims. Nice informative vid John, many thanx

Just drilled my On-One Fatty rims and saved 150 grams per rim drilling 30 holes with a 32mm holesaw as described in this video. I would also not drill a bigger hole than 32mm. It was pretty slow and painstaking work, but not undoable if you can do normal drilling.

There will be drilled rims in the future but, as with the Salsas, they will only be on the more expensive builds.

How are they holding up John? I've gig my Fatty on order to northern Virginia and also plan to ride it in eastern PA. Think I need to be timid I over logs, in rock gardens, or steep descents? I'd like to drill my rims straight away. I already have the lighter Schwalbe tubes. Thanks!

Nice Vid, think you have got to be farly brave with steady hands to do this. It is a shame of course that On One don't sell their fat bike with driiled rims like the prototype had, seems like an accountants decision to go with solid rims & from a riders perspective a pretty stupid one too. sort it out On One, I'm definitely not spending 4hrs+ & voiding the warranty of the rims to make them how they should have been in the first place. Not even considering the Fatty till they correct this mistake

Almost ALL of the SURLY rims have holes now... I got a Pugsley this summer and had them swap out the Large Marge Lite rims with the older Large Marge rims because I didn't want the holes. I'm using the Black Floyd tires and running them at 21psi. Most of the knobbies are typically run at 12-25 psi and I thought that the higher pressure would, over time, start to increase the bulging from the holes. The rims I got are the ones with the machined edges, so they are a bit lighter already & strong

When those fatty c-dale axles are ready, I'll be sure to include an automatic center punch in the parcel.

My question is does dirt collect in these holes and is it difficult to clean out without removing tire and tape? And also one other question is if someone had more time and a way of doing so you could do something other than just holes correct? Like you could put stars or what Id like to do is biohazard symbol... I know it would take much more time up and isn't as easy to do, but it should work just the same correct?

imo holes with motifs shapes should have rounded edges, or else it would create stress points , but would look great for sure

Would 40mm holes be ok on a 100mm wide rim?
@MAFaiz-xc9iu3 жыл бұрын
This will not crack the rim right? 😅

Thanks for the video, saving weight? no, i'm gonna do mine to pimp my ride, do you fit just rim tape afterwards?
@dazeoftundra10 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I can't remember the weight saving. About 200g per wheel I think. After drilling just make sure the holes are nice and smooth then add the rim tape. We used Surly tape on these.

So for 4 hours of work you can save 1/2 an ounce of weight and weaken the front rim of a bike. Big waste of time.

Too difficult for me. Ill keep my wheels undrilled.

Is it okay for the all rims? Like mine is a generic one, it is the stock rim from my fat bike
@dazeoftundra8 жыл бұрын
I can't say it will be fine for all rims, but it should be OK on most aluminium rims. Just be sure to leave a good amount of material around the spoke holes and smooth of the edges.
