Reality is beginning to sink in for Nia DaCosta, the director of Captain Marvel 2 as she reportedly pitches sequel ideas to Kevin Feige without much success, even admitting that the future of franchise depends on this movie being good. Somehow Nia, I don't think it will be.

YOUR WISH IS GRANTED!! Rogue will be race swap, ugly, starred by even more entitled actress on Brown Snow level, and her character will be more cringe than Captain Karen' stoic wood face. Another well written female character was Anderson in Dredd. Movie was basically her story, she has a whole arc to become a badass Judge. She is flawed, vulnerable and unsure of herself but is more human than her stoic counterpart. She doesn’t end up mimicking Dredd at the end she becomes her own type of Judge.

YES! thank you! Another well written female character should include Sasha Waybright from Amphibia. She starts off as a snarky, bossy cheerleader girlfriend but upon being stranded, she becomes a military general who upon nearly getting killed has a turnaround who thinks on her feet. Even in the final fight when the stakes are down and the villain (her brainwashed friend by the way) is kicking her ass and mocking her for failures, she's worried about failing and letting her friends down and proves the villain wrong when she gets her ass up and cuts the core off her friend and saves the day. And Amphibia is ironically from Disney and that show was great!

Really well done how she went from Dredd being dismissive of her and losing her weapon during her evaluation (which should have been an auto-fail); to at the end her attitude is 'I'm failing anyway so I might as well do what I think is right', actually showing mercy to a guy who's as much a victim as anyone, and earning Dredd's respect and being passed.

To add to the pool of opinions: As a woman, I chuckle at the idea of "female oriented" being narrowed down to "women do things" these days by individual writers here and there. I agree that I also do not want to see a woman superhero overpower everybody, yet I am interested in superhero movies as a male powerfantasy. I do highly enjoy watching powerful, handsome men have (intriguing) power and ponder on how to use it. Dr Strange being my favorite, the archetype of a man comprehending his own relationship to power appeals to me. So what I wish to add here is that: "female oriented" used to also mean the man I want to have (not to be) being on screen, doing sth I admire.

Your comment made me think. There's something universally appealing about stories of men saving the day because men want to be that guy, its a male fantasy afterall, and women want a guy like that (want or appreciate, wtv), so its a win/win When women show up in these roles it doesnt feed of from this male powerfantasy, men dont identify with nor do they want their loved one to be this stuck up no nonsense, no shortcomings strong woman who doesnt care or even likes men, and as far as I can tell women arent invading cinemas because in the end of the day there arent many women who fantasized their whole lives about having superpowers nor do they identify with these type of characters which makes sense because no one likes a Mary Sue I'd say something very similar happens in stand up comedy, a guy does stand up men identify with and women appreciate his humor, a woman does comedy men dont identify with them and as far as I can tell other women also dont care that much about female comedians I know this feels like Im mansplaining why women CANT be superheroes or stand up comedians, of course they can, and sometimes it works perfectly, its just that when its the other way around there's something universally appealing about it, I apologise if it come off as demeaning in any way

If women wanted true equality, Jack would have survived in Titanic. Superhero movies work, not because our heroes overpower everybody. We rarely see that. Characters like Batman work because he sacrifices everything, his fortune, his relationships, his future, for the sake of Gotham. There are a few exceptions who pay the price: Jessica Jones and Buffy. That's why these two are heroes. But majority of female "heroes" just wants free rides at an amusement park.

One of my favorite things about the fight at the end of Aliens with Ripley vs the alien queen is that throughout the fight, you can see how absolutely TERRIFIED Ripley is. She's not quipping and smirking her way through the fight. She's fighting for her life, and terrified that she might lose. Because she knows what will happen if she does. It helps sell the danger she's in, and makes the scene that much more tense. Whereas with most modern "strong female character" movies, there's no real tension. There's no danger. They write the female character to be this uber badass who just yawns her way through "fights" with absolute assurity. And that makes for really dull cinema.

Well, it has been a staple of cinema that the 'bad guy' has appeared to have taken mortal damage and be beaten but reemerges temporarily for second part to the final boss fight and a more final ending. But there's a big difference between 'assuming the death' and seeing obvious mortal damage onscreen that makes their "just a flesh wound" recovery be rather un-believable.

History Bro nailed it... women and young girls do not want to be "bad ass" superhero's....and Women do NOT want to see female superhero's that act like men.. they want to see Strong, Smart, Good Looking Superhero MEN. Occasionally the public can handle a believable "Strong female character" like Buffy... Ripley...Trinity...Sarah Conner etc, but none of those characters put men down...are somehow magically AMAZING at everything..and constantly remind you they are a woman.

The whole gimmick of Buffy was "what if the girly, blonde, cheerleader who dies in first in the horror movie was actually the tough, main hero?" Look at shows like Kim Possible, Powerpuff Girls, and Totally Spies. Women and girls love seeing feminine ladies kick butt while fixing their hair and the boys thinking they're cute for it. That's their power fantasy. Modern Hollywood sadly forgot this. 😔

To be honest, the idea of feminizing a franchise like comic book heroes, sci fi- stuff like star wars and big fantasy battles like LOTR always had a mostly male audience in mind I think. Turn time back a couple of decades there probably was a small minority of women and girls who liked these things. Nowadays where being a nerd is trendy these things were adjusted and failed because the people who caused the success in the first place want the thing they liked before. A stupid comparison would be strawberry ice cream suddenly tasting like chocolate. You can still lable it as strawberry but when the taste is completely changed it sucks.

To write good characters, empathy is a real asset. It lets you step into the shoes of the character you are creating and experience them first hand, discovering their motives and desires kind of organically. The problem here is that empathy is a human trait and the writers of these shows aren't human. They are political constructs, manufactured for the sole goal of promoting certain ideological messaging to the public. The characters they give us are basically billboard advertisements for their message and have no more depth or gravitas than a sheet of paper glued to a wall.

The Ripley example goes much deeper than her role as a woman. Yes Ripley is the voice of reason, but in both Alien and Aliens she's not the ONLY voice of reason. Dallas and Hicks are both reasonable men who lend gravitas to Ripley's opinions. She's not just a silent voice nobody listens to, she gets put over by characters we empathize with too. Also, Ripley isn't just a badass who outshines marines, she does so for a reason: she's earned it. She's dealt with the xenomorph before. She's been through that fire and that's what makes her different. If she was just some nobody seeing an alien for the first time who then outshined the marines, it wouldn't work.
@andystegall7407
@andystegall7407 Жыл бұрын
Ripley was only the hero because she was the only one left in the first movie. Yes, she is smart and tough and brave and yadda yadda yadda, but she's still just a regular person. In the second she had experience, however limited with alien lifeforms and was brought along to assist the Marines who failed because they were sabotaged by the corporation and sacrificed to get a live specimen. Ripley again was the sole survivor and her maternal instinct to rescue Newt stemmed from the guilt of accidentally abandoning her daughter and outliving her. A modern remake of Alien would have Ripley be a badass from the start, effectively missing the mark as to why she's such a great character.

Does anyone remember 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' (1996)? Where the main character starts as a caring mother, remembers she was a bada** agent to finally merge her two personalities to become a bada** mother? How she avoids close combat, because as a woman she is physically weaker than many men? Sure, she can kick butt, but she prefers to use guns at a distance, because physical strength doesn't matter there. How she even breaks down when she thinks her daughter might die? And she gets out of the worst situations by being smart and resourceful. Not by simply being invincible and stoic.

People who are legitimately fans of Samus, typically like her being someone who speaks very little but is an unquestionable destructive force. She is the number one bounty hunter in the galaxy her name alone it was Fear from the enemies in the game. Those people that like that Samus typically like to see her in the armor and maybe show her face once in awhile. And yet we know so much about her from her actions, with the way that she cares for the Metroid baby, the way that she attempts to save the animals on a dying planet. All of that is in addition to the destruction. Of course there are the porn adults people that only care about her and skin tight latex but we don't associate with those people 👀

I actually got a bit excited there for a second when the director admitted there are a lot of female lead action and superhero movies and its just about the moving being good. Felt like maybe it's finally sinking to some of the people within Marvel... Then she started talking about it being the first comedic take in the MCU, and labeling it "wacky." Bding overly wacky and comedic is exactly what killed Love and Thunder and has actually been a recurring issue in most MCU properties: Very little is taken seriously in the MCU anymore, and very little has consequences to the characters or world.

Juxtapose Ripley with Sarah Connor in the second Terminator film. She isn't trying to turn herself into a man; she's become a terminator herself, embodying every trait of the model that once tried to kill her. Muscled up and driven, she looks 100% lethal to any human that would stop her from reaching her goal. And like Ripley, Sarah regains her agency (and humanity) through her love of a child. It's honestly baffling how Hollywood thinks that a "strong female character" have to be a plank of wood without any weaknesses or flaws Vi from Arcane is a typical strong female character, but she does have moment of weaknesses (a lot of them): 1. she's traumatized, along with Powder, for the loss of her parents because of the war 2. Her overconfidence (especially when she's a teen) have indirectly bad consequences 3. her weakness is now her sister Powder who's mentally too far gone and she has to accept that, but logically she can't

9:00 Yes! She's a great example! We also see something in Aeryn we rarely see in other traditional girl boss characters in modern media: She gets her ass beat. Aeryn is incredibly capable, and is shown to be so, but her and the rest of the crew aren't invincible. Often times the goal is to escape rather than fight because Farscape cares about the world it is trying to depict. It makes her a better heroine because she actually perseveres through her failures. She doesn't just get a second wind and blow up starships at will, or just magically discover she can displace an entire mountain with her mind. She gets knocked down and gets back up, and as a result is way more relatable.

Flaws don't just make us relate to a character. They also make us fear for their victory/survival, which makes us root for them as protagonists. She isn't the main character by any stretch, but I love the mother who's lost her husband in PUNISHER WAR ZONE: she loved her husband, she needs to take care of her daughter, and she's angry at Frank when he comes to give her a bunch of money. He even invites her to kill him. She can't not because she's the hero of the movie but rather because she just doesn't have it in her as a good human being; she knows killing him would put her in prison and leave her daughter alone. The whole time, I was still invested in her character.

Re: writing characters I write short-film scripts (usually dark comedy, with a hint [or strong overtones] of the paranormal). When I write, I sit down with the premise, and it's as though I'm taking dictation. The characters speak for themselves, and sometimes _I'm_ even surprised in the direction the story goes. But usually, as the guest indicates, my female characters tend to be the voice of reason. In one script a deadly warning has been issued, but the male's curiosity has been piqued, and his girlfriend has to point out she's seen enough horror movies to know this is a bad idea...

My favorite example for how popular strong female characters are is Cynthia from the Pokémon franchise. Since her introduction over 15 years ago she is still one of, if not the most popular character in that franchise, and her entire thing is that she's the best. She's played up to be absurdly better than everyone else, always calm, has this aura of superiority and is actually hard to beat in the games for casuals. But it works because she is a complex character and a has colorful background story, you actually get to know her and find out why she is the way she is. I think the problem with a lot of "strong female characters" is not that they are "strong female characters", it's that they are written horribly.

There is a reason why there is no male oriented version of The Notebook or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Those films appeal to females, because the themes expressed in those films speak, on some level, to the female experience or female aspirations. Trying to remake those films with male leads playing the female parts would come across as comical or offensive. So why would anyone in their right mind think that superhero films, which appeal to male nature and men's fantasies, would some how work well with a gender swap? Getting women to behave like men invariably will fail because it looks inauthentic.

The ones that do the most damage to the idea of female led films are the pathetic directors and writers not making a movie worth watching. It doesn’t matter if the lead of a movie is the most minority of minorities and the most female of females. If the writing was done with a crayon and a twitter post and the directing done by a giggling fool who has never considered an idea outside their own perspective, best case scenario nobody will care. Worst case, they will give the public the idea that these people shouldn’t be in films.

I've gone back into anime and manga in the last couple years and those industries are a perfect example of how you can have products for boys and girls and be successful. You have shonen franchises like Gundam, Dragon Ball and One Piece for boys and you have shojou franchises like Pretty Cure, Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura for girls. No one is trying to make Berserk into something like a girl series from Clamp. No one is trying to make magical girl heroines less cute and more manly. There are tough anime women (like Balsa from Seiren no Moribito) but they still retain feminine features and personality traits. It's not just changing male things to be more feminine. Western entertainment companies are obsessed with trying to force women into liking things that traditionally appeal more to men. It would be like if romance book publishers start changing their books to appeal to men who watch sports and drink cheap beer. What is so wrong with knowing your primary customers and keeping them happy?

The _actual_ audience for these franchises has blurred over time, though. Plenty of shounen series can have a sizable female fanbase (especially One Piece). Some mangaka even seem to be "pandering" to potential female readers by including more bishounen character designs. Magical girl series seem to be actively attracting more male viewers ever since they started copying Super Sentai. _Pretty Cure_ is effectively part of the _Super Hero Time_ block that includes _Kamen Rider_ and _Super Sentai_

@@EvilDoresh Of course there are a minority of people that don't fit the exact target demographic. Just like there has always been girls who read superhero comics. But that isn't to say that these genres have to be completely redesigned with that minority in mind. I don't think it's weird for a shonen or seinen show to feature bishi male characters. I've watched plenty of 90s male anime with very pretty male characters. The Magical Girl genre is kinda weird. It started off as a shonen genre with Go Nagai's Cutie Honey in the 70s. Then became a really girly thing in the 80s with things like Creamy Mami where it wasn't so much an action genre. Then in the 90s it became more oriented again with series Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura while still targeting girls. So I totally see the magical girl anime fitting in with super hero-ish shows since that's what the genre has been for over 30 years.

Good characters, both male and female, have traits we empathize with, arcs that grow/develop them, they are presented as human and put into interesting scenarios. The Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises all have some wonderful, strong female characters. In fact, a lot of horror movies have female leads who have to overcome adversity in order to survive; and they do this not because they are 'better than men', or look down on men; but merely by using their wits and abilities. Another modern movie with a good female lead, is "Shadow in the Cloud" (2020) starring Chloe Grace Mortez. While I feel the movie has a few shortcomings, it's not due to the Maude Garrett character, who beautifully conveys a believable, natural struggle to survive. The problem we're having is that it's the highly visible, big budget, Hollywood movies which are pushing the whole "men suck and women are perfect" mentality. We need this trend to not die a quiet death, but to crash and burn in a ball of flames that everyone sees happening.

4th and 5th since that’s what was written and promised. But sci-fi channel is second only to fox when it comes to ditching good shows. 2 also had an in story reason for being able to fold guys twice her size like a pretzel since it was eventually revealed she was a biological android.

I think after so many years of confusion, I finally get it. Every woman has the same basic desire: to be special/exceptional. And then we decided to gear society, education, business, culture, etc. over to telling them that: yes. They are all in fact special, exceptional, powerful, independent, stunning, etc. Forgetting that women are socially fixated group thinkers. And when you get a *ROOM* full of people who want more than anything to think well of themselves, who've been told nothing but sweetly affirmative lies about how great they are since elementary school, who make all their decisions by committee... well... you get She Hulk. And Captain Marvel. And this upcoming clog in the sewer pipeline...

Not sure why you guys always forget to mention Lena Headey, in whatever role she plays, she is 100% believable as a strong woman. It never comes off as forced, or overacting. She played Cersei Lannister, Sarah Conner, and Mama (from Dread), and all of those were badd-a$$.

hollywood has the most extreme echo chamber I have ever personally witnessed. Like you legit have to be in it to understand how far outside current events they are in. When ever I attempted to get into deep talks on actors and films they all had a somehow.... instantaneous reply that was EXACTLY the same no matter who I conversed with. Films will be bad for a long time until someone who is a true fan of each film and character. There are literal directors who main goal is to hoodwink an entire brand to built their own because they know without big nostalgic brands to trick fans... it is next to impossible for them to get eyes on them otherwise because they can literally not make NEW brands lol. They want all this woman power men bad narratives, thats fine but why cant you do it on your own lol the irony of using these "patriarchal" movies to make your chance screams.... no one watches unless you have a name from the bad men lol.

I watched Mission impossible 2 for the first time in years at the weekend. Thandiwe Newton was absolutely brilliant in that film. She was intelligent, strong in all the right ways, she wasn't kicking the shit out of 6ft men with ease, but she used her wits to survive certain situations. She was vulnerable but didn't look weak. She was feminine, beautiful and genuinely an interesting character.

The Japanese write the best female super heroes. Besides Alita, one of the best all-female superheroes that are loved by boys and girls, men and women, has cultural impact around the world even decades after its final season is Sailor Moon series. The lead character, Sailor Moon, is a cry-baby, rather dumb, lazy, but very lovable and feminine, she never tried to be macho, bad ass or kick ass girl, in fact all of her weapons and super powers are all very girly and yet, people love her, her fans are not just children, but also adults, both men and women. Even Chrissie Mayr cosplayed her in Anime Matsuri just last month, right Drinker? :)

@@DeadManWalking-ym1oo It also makes for interesting character development. A lot of magical girl stories feature what is basically just some dumb kid being thrust into a role which they (at least initially) are not qualified for. Now if you compare the character from the start of the manga to the same one from the end, you generally notice they've grown quite well into the role. They might still have all their personality quirks, but they know when to get serious.

It's ironic that they say these movies are not made for men. Women don't want to watch women unless the character is having drama with a man! Women want to watch romantic relationships. Even if it's about a Queen they want to see her relationships with men. Wonder Woman has a thing with a man, too! So, these female super heroes are aimed at women, but women aren't really watching. Maybe, it's really aimed at gay men? 🤷🏿‍♂️

They are made for a phantom audience which live the the heads of the comics stans, like Kelly Sue Deconnick herself, and envisions an audience of teen females aka girls, who while some may like this stuff and Rey Skywalker, usually like other random stuff. & Gay men will just watch Captain America again, for shirtless Chris Evans, a movie with an actual plot & story arc.

@@ferrarriohh That's my point. The "modern" audience is small at best, and not going to make money for the company that finances these movies. The creators are delusional, or don't care.
