It's fair to say that Nic Cage has gone through his ups and downs as an actor, but The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a welcome return to form for him after a decade of B-movie misery.

Christopher Lee once said something along the lines of, “Every actor is in a bad movie at some point, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be bad in them.” And I think Cage has a similar philosophy. No matter the movie, he’s giving it his all.

Did you get that "Pig" is actually a comedy? Cage is so very, very, VERY serious it underscores the absurdity of the film. An underground fight club for restaurant workers where servers and busboys beat up chefs? A highly successful restauranteur weeping over scotch eggs? The drama and intrigue of the food service supply business? Bruh. My personal favorite scene: The bakery with extremely long dramatic pauses between lines. "Do you still make that salted baguette?" (30 second pause) "Yes." (30 second pause) "I need one."

I don't necessarily think UWoMT represents a turning point for Cage - I think he hit that turning point as of a few years ago, starting notably with Mandy, but continuing with Color Out of Space, Willie's Wonderland, and even Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent itself. I think he's finally decided to do what he loves - acting for the sake of it. Not necessarily in films that are big budget, and not even necessarily in films that are GOOD (looking at you, Prisoners of the Ghostland), but in films that he has a blast doing or really wants to do because he finds the concept of them interesting. He's got not one, but TWO different films coming in the near future that look like they're going to be traditional Westerns (how many of those do we see nowadays? Not too many, that's for sure), and he's also got his role as Dracula in Reinfeld coming next year. Personally, as someone who considers him to be a fantastic actor - even in the hilariously shitty films he's done over the last decade or so, he's usually the highlight of the movie, and is almost always a joy to watch - I'm really excited to see this renaissance for his career. Even if every single film he does from now until he retires is like Prisoners of the Ghostland, they'll be fascinating even if they suck ass.

@@Spartan1981uk Yes. It was an incredibly poignant film and really showed off Cage's acting chops. I also really enjoyed Color Out of Space, as an internet user mentioned. Mr. Cage has described his operatic acting style as 👉 Nouveau Shamanic. Okay so this guy is AWESOME 😆 In all seriousness, when you pair him with a good director and a good script he’s still one of the most fun to watch actors on screen there is. This guy isn’t afraid to take risks as an actor. The man won an Oscar when it actually meant something as an actor to win such an award.

Well said. Dude is a fearless actor. One of a kind
@Wustenfuchs109
@Wustenfuchs109 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and he had a nice explanation why the style is named that way. Shamans were people who'd fall into some form of trans but not lose themselves completely. They would act out possessions and visions, they were the original stage performers and they did and acted what came to them as a feeling in a specific instance, without caring that much about a general concept - which in the end created a very unique and captivating show for the people looking at them. And that is what Cage is talking about. His ticks and outbursts, exaggerations, cringe moments - that's all the primal feeling left unfiltered to bubble up to the surface. He looks at the role, and then acts it the way he feels it at any given moment. Hence the name Nouveau Shamanic. He tries to capture the mystery and beauty of those first actors in humanity in a new day and age. It might look strange to us, as we got used to a very sterile and professional performance from very sterile actors, but he decided that is not what art is. Art IS taking risks. Art IS doing what you feel in a moment. Painters do it. Musicians do it. So he, as an actor, tried it as well and gave it a fancy name. You can say many things about it, but no one can say that it isn't different. And, as all things different, some will like it, some will hate it. I am personally sick and tired of sterile actors who get type-casted in basically one role for their entire life. And some of the folks we consider "the best actors" today, are like that - playing one and the same character their entire professional life, just changing names and franchises. To me, that is not what a good actor is. A good actor must be able to change roles the way they change costumes, and sell the character just as good every single time, with it being unique in itself. And, unlike many in the business, Nick Cage can actually do it.
@utubebgay

I have always been impressed by Nicolas Cage's reaction to going bankrupt. He does not have franchises to fall back on like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone. He just kept accepting newer and newer roles. While his own unique style may have broken the immersion in more than a few of them, he never intentionally turned in a bad performance. The fact that he gets to play himself in this movie almost guaranteed he would be good because there is no immersion to break.

I love Cage. He's the best part of every movie he's in, even if the movie is shit. I just always feel like he's having fun. Also that one SNL skit where he guest starred on "Get in the Cage" as a clone of himself, is fucking great.

I'll have to watch this, for sure, then. LAH was such a criminally underrated movie, where Schwarzenegger beat his own over the top tropes into the ground, and did it genuinely, and hilariously. Too bad so many have missed that film.
@Ailar2209

@@PTurbo86 Yeah, I'm completely with you on LAH. I think back then audiences simply weren't ready for the kind of self-aware humor on display in that film. These days, when so many people are more cynical and consume their entertainment "ironically", lest anyone thinks they're really into stuff like that, maybe a flick like LAH would fly better - who knows.

I fkn love this movie! These middle-range-budget movies that give creative freedom are the kind of movies i live for! And despite all the controversies the work that Nicholas Cage as been doing in these past few years just speaks for itself imo! It's like he finally figured himself-out, can now deal a new hand, showcase his talent and what he himself is really all about!

Probably hopes that I've always enjoyed Nick Cage's movies mostly because of over-the-top acting roles and adventurous characters but this movie may be my favorite movie of the entire decade. Got a book from the library "Age of Cage" I think, that started me on this kick. "Mom & Dad" is offbeat. His "post-stardom" movies are very very interesting. He's a Real actor. Some of the behind the scenes stuff was great. The director/writers got together and started making a movie about multiple versions of Nick Cage, and had zero contact with him and no clue if he'd ever do the movie. They were total Nick Cage fanboys...and Pedro Pascal was an even bigger fanboy. There was a scene where Nick Cage is essentially half trying to kill himself at the bottom of a swimming pool while drinking, and when the directors were trying to instruct Cage (the actor) on the scene he joked "Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean" (like he'd been there before). Cage admitted that the thing that he wanted to do the most in this movie was this black & white artsy montage where he kills his imaginary self. It had elements from many of Cage's past movies incorporated into it, Face Off, Gone in 60 seconds, Leaving Las Vegas, and all shot in a style similar to that "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (or art style around that period), which was that 100 year old movie they were always talking about it in the movie. Sadly most of that scene got cut, but it is in the DVD extras. Also for fun, Nick Cage specifically made a reference to the "Not the bees!" line he's always meme'd about

August 13, 2022 - Ahhh.. Once again The Drinker proves that he's either the son, or friend that I never had. Nick Cage is an actor whose name when mentioned, or when comes to mind, makes me smile. The man lives life, and what you see is what you get. Not many people in the entertainment industry, or in life generally can say that about themselves. When I was recovering from a surgical procedure at my V.A. hospital in Connecticut. One of my male nurses, who happened to be a spitting image of Tim Robbins by the way. Told me that he actually bumped into Nick Cage at Mardi Gra in New Orleans when he was younger. He said he bumped into someone while walking in the crowd and turned around. As he did, he saw Nick Cage who gave him the usual big Cage smile and said, "Hey man... how yah doin?". My nurse said that Cage seemed to be alone, but could possibly have had unseen "assistances" with him. Nick Cage along with that Sphinx like actress "of one facial expression", Noomi Rapace. Are among my favorite "Guilty pleasure" actors. I just really enjoy seeing them on screen. I avoid social, (I call it unsocial) media, so I have to wonder what Pascal's "questionable" comments on Twitter have been. I like his acting, and don't much care what his political/social views are. I'm only interested in whether people in the entertainment industry do their jobs well, and I feel that they are entitled to have their personal opinions, which are usually of no interest to me.
