Not necessarily. Many addicts can give up for a period of time knowing they can consume their drug of choice after a date or an occurrence or some benchmark . AA even has a term for it: ‘white knuckling’ To me an addict is someone who knows deep down that their behaviour/ habit is damaging but cannot moderate, eg can they drink only one glass of wine rather than four so they don’t experience the negative consequences. Eg the ex-husband of a friend of mine can give up alcohol every January and some years even February but when he drinks he gets so drunk that he knows he has to sleep on the floor of his bathroom otherwise he’ll wet the bed. He’s certain he’s not an alcoholic because he can stop drinking for a set period but the fact that he (in his 50s) regularly drinks so much that he knows he’ll loose bladder control, yet can’t moderate his drinking once he starts, indicates (as well as other behaviours) he has a serious problem with alcohol.

Indeed ( presuming the third hand account is vaguely accurate ) you're friend's ex husband is a hard core alcoholic in extreme denial. But in this case , even the wife trying to make him look bad in this regard , makes no such accusations.

Wow! This was MY life and was my question for years! The drinking seemed part of my ex's social upper tier. I should have seen it. It was well documented in every picture I saw from the past. There was a drink in his hand in every picture. Functional alcoholics are difficult to sort out. They "handle" the alcohol and they "handle" you to the point you question your concerns. I am 57yo. My dad was a functioning alcoholic. It's never okay regardless if you're safe, happy, etc. I have watched alcohol destroy lives. My dad eventually got liver cancer and died and left my mom with a ton of debt. Then the burden fell on me to take care of her rest. Alcohol is a drug. People drink to relax, escape the reality, sleep, etc. Anytime you are using something to escape your reality that is called misuse and that's called self-medicating. That's when it's time to go to a counselor, to a psychiatrist, and maybe talk about getting prescribed proper medication to deal with some of the stuff you have going on. Maybe start working out, yoga, stretching, meditation, 12-step, anything to help you not escape the reality.

True. Alcohol consumption is normalized. Many people are actually heavy or at-risk drinkers without realizing it. I'm not sure why anyone would think any amount of poison is okay to ingest in their body. I quit drinking about a 1.5 yrs ago. 2 dead give aways you've got a problem: 1. You go to the doctor and have some type of health issue that likely came from the alcohol. Elevated liver enzymes, high bp ETC. 2. You do not have at least 3 nights a week when you do not drink at all. If your drinking every night of the week , and your lifestyle does not permit not drinking 3 nights out of the week -- you might have a problem.

He has changed his behaviour a bit after talking to him, and does drink less so he stays awake and not get to his agrumentive state now. But it has tainted my view on Alcohol and I no longer want to drink it myself. But I do think I need to get out of his head. Great explanation of the difference between alcoholism and addiction. The tragic thing is how easy it is to slowly slide from occasional social drinker to alcoholism to addiction. And once you hit addiction, the result is always the same. Destruction of your own life and of many others’. But you’re so blinded by then, you often can’t see how you’ve destroyed others or even yourself.

I had to stop listening 3 minutes in. Get to the point. Why did you marry a drinker in the first place if you're this neurotic about it. Even if he didn't drink, I get the feeling she would be like this with something else.

I agree with this post. I have known people who are physically addicted to alcohol. It destroys their lives, they cannot control it, and quitting would mean withdrawal symptoms because they are physically addicted. I have also known people who drink a lot but are not physically addicted. Generally they drink a lot to self-medicate for some other problem, and so it is difficult to say if the issue is the alcohol or the underlying problem. So how do you know the difference? The only way to tell is the withdrawal symptoms. If someone can stop cold turkey, then they are not physically addicted to alcohol and branding such people as alcoholics actually hurts true alcoholics who cannot and should not stop with out help.
@dewilew2137
@dewilew2137 Жыл бұрын
The issue is the alcohol and the underlying problem. Both need to be addressed. Just like with any other addiction. You can still be a problem drinker and not experience withdrawal. It’s actually dangerous to set withdrawal symptoms as the hallmark of addiction. It enables drinkers who don’t become ill upon cessation to continue drinking and deny that they have a problem. “Well I don’t get sick when I stop, so I’m fine!” Then one day they wake up in a cold sweat, trembling and nearly choking on their own vomit, and they never knew what hit them. It’s a dangerous road to go down.

I call her a binge alcoholic coz she can stay dry for a while (see I haven’t got a problem, its just for fun, to relax, my treat, all the excuses) then get blasted and she has done this my entire life! no matter how many times I begged her as a teen and she swore she’d stop! Even when she got a stomach ulcer on 3 separate occasions. She cannot and will not live without it! Or address any of her issues (coz there nothing wrong with her apparently) If a doctor told her one more drink and you’ll drop dead! You’d find her a week later stone dead with a glass in her hand!

Some people can’t handle their alcohol and shouldn’t drink. Others have a higher tolerance and are able to metabolize it and also just use the substance for a way to relax and release stress. She just sounds like she has a control issue like she said. She wants him to be something he’s NOT. If she’s not careful she will cause more problems then it’s worth.

Who wouldn't desire to be resilient and looking new? Certainly, drinking is a great way to unwind and not something which everyone should cut 100% from their lifestyle, but, in Steffon Barkload's homepagw there's an approach that pretty much forces your head to repulse alcohol by simply thinking of it.

It doesn't matter. Alcoholic means different things to people. My doctor said that 1 drink a day for women and two for men was an acceptable and responsible amount to consume. Once I understood that anything beyond that was alcohol misuse and/or abuse, then I could see my behavior for what it was. I wasn't an "alcoholic" but I damn sure misused alcohol!!! 7 drinks on a good night! Not every night but on the weekends? For sure! Turn up! Shots and a beer! It was fun. I still made it to work. I didn't drink and drive. No drama. No fights. I just abused the hell out of the substance. After a while my health started to crumble. I quit. Never going back.

I don’t agree with how Dr. John answered her question. She didn’t describe his drinking as an occasional thing that he does with friends. What she said is that he started drinking a little bit and over time she noticed he was drinking a lot more and more days during the week. That’s certainly somebody who’s on the slippery slope to alcoholism. Dr. John tried to write it off as her being overly concerned or having a strict anti-alcohol point of you that she wasn’t addressing with her husband. Poor advice there.
