Before I started drinking whiskey I gifted a friend a bottle of Willet pot still. Once I found out how bad it was I called him up to apologize. He was very gracious saying gifted whiskey is the best whiskey. But he has plenty left when I come over

I love when people get me bottles I wouldn't buy myself, especially like cheaper stuff. Someone gifted me a bottle of Howler Head once, which I was always curious about but couldn't bring myself to buy cause I don't drink flavored stuff, and I was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed it lol. Kinda like your friend I still have almost the full bottle, but I am pumped that I got it as a gift.

Larceny gets crapped on a lot but I really do enjoy it, I think as an entry-level wheated bourbon it stands out enough from MM and the Green River wheater to be worth a try.

My dad liked the Willett bottle shape and I had enjoyed the Willett rye so we picked up a bottle, and instantly we knew that was a rough mistake when we tried it. Took awhile for that bottle to disappear.

I don't love Basil Hayden's, but I don't think there is anything particularly flawed about it. It's a generic, 80 proof, little flavor, whisky. It's whisky for someone who doesn't really like to drink whisky. It's unoffensive. That would be my guess as to why it rated highly. I don't think they did anything to screw it up, they just didn't do anything to try and make it good.

I actually liked Willett Pot Still. For a while. Now that it's less than half full, it started to taste more like other Willett products with the pot still funk added.

I love balcones rye, I think the problem people have is they expect it to be a typical rye like willet family reserve, whistle pig etc. But it's not even in the same baseball stadium. Have to treat it like an outlier or its own category. It's a woody, oily, chocolate bomb

I am wondering why Angels Envy was in the least favorite whiskies is it that people just don't like finished products? You could throw Rowans Creek in there or Noah's Mill. Both I struggled to finish.

A great one. I need to watch this weekly. I agree on Old Tub, a friend told me to buy it and I almost dumped the bottle. Even and Old Fashioned couldn’t redeem it. I ended up dumping into a vat with others I didn’t like and the combination was better than the individual bottles.

A lot of people hate Texas Rye and I understand, but sometimes I actually go looking for it. My bottle has lasted 4 years and still going though. The cask strength is definitely better. I have a cask strength port finish that is absolutely horrendous.

I can't fathom the Balcones Rye hate! That's one of my favorite ryes. We get all kinds of single barrel barrel proof store pics finished in all kinds of barrels like rum, sherry, and tequila here in Texas. I get it's not for everybody but I don't get the hate. It tastes like dark chocolate covered espresso beans to me.

No kidding, their rye is a great whisky. But it's also an outlier rye. It doesn't live in the MGP 95/5 or Kentucky barely-rye wheelhouse whatsoever, and that's probably why people don't like it.

Most people don't like things that are challenging, and Balcones makes challenging whiskys. If you're a person who 'likes their coffee to taste like coffee, dagnabit!' then you'll probably hate Balcones, but if you like naturally processed Ethiopian beans that taste like funky berries, you'll probably love Balcones. Or it could just be a genetic thing like cilantro and the soapy taste.

Pretty sure the cask strength barrel picks that may or may not be finished are completely different than the standard 100proof shelfer they had in this video. Not so hard to fathom after all.

Willett Pot Still doesn't taste great but I can drink it all night with no hangover. Early in my bourbon craze, I was drinking Woodford Reserve, and while I loved the taste, I found it gave me a headache almost immediately. No such problem with Willett. Maybe there's a correlation between sub par flavor and increased purity.

Had a friend recommend Balcones so I grabbed the cask strength Rye (last bottle on shelf) when I saw it. He later clarified anything but the Rye haha. It was brutal but somehow I finished it.

Thank you for confirming the best of the worst... we were gifted a bottle of the "Willet Pot Still Reserve" and it was terrible (really undrinkable). How does the distillery not know this whiskey sucks? I believe they do, that's why it's in the fancy bottle.

Pot Still is like someone vomits in a bucket, someone extracted just the chunks for the mash, fermented it with crab apples and then decided it would be a good idea to bottle the distillate and sell it as a prank on humanity.

Can you guys try Colorado straight bourbon peach tree distillers ? Or if you tried it let me know what you think. I got it as a gift and didn’t like it. I get like earthy Smokey / taste smell on it. Don’t think it’s aged much. Interested to know if like it. I usually like almost all bourbons you like.

What you guys said about that pot still is what is upsetting to me, it's bad, and it's bad in a way where there is no way that the people who made it thought it was good. It tastes tainted, like something went wrong and they just said, fuck it, put it in a cool bottle and call it 65$.

I haven't had the Oak and Eden because the chunk of wood gimmick throws me off - but I agree the rest are simply awful! There is clearly differentiation among palates that makes some whiskeys more appealing to certain people, but this video gives me comfort in knowing there is some consensus on what bad whiskey is.

I keep around 30 good bottles in my collection.. Picked up my first ever Willet Pot Still about 6 months ago. Immediately had the same reaction as something just seemed tainted about it. Kept revisiting maybe once a month to see if it opened up & changed (it didn't). Literally the only bottle I've ever poured 3/4 worth down the drain. Some god awful stuff!!!

Castle and Key...over half of that bottle went into my forever bottle. Didn't care for Old Tub either. Also a big contributor to my forever bottle. Had Willet years ago. I finished the bottle because I didn't have a forever bottle at the time. Don't believe I enjoyed it.
