I searched for Drinkmate because I was looking for some new drink recipes and found your review. I hope you are getting good use from it. I've had mine for two years and I like it. I mainly bought it to make myself Italian cream sodas (coffee shops want $4-5 for one and never have my preferred orange flavor anymore!) but a nice sugar-free fizzy lemonade is really nice on a hot day. I've found that the colder the water - the more fizz you get. If I'm making a drink that I want to store in the fridge for a day or two, I carbonate the bottle once, let it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours and then re-carbonate it. The bubbles are way more intense. I've also learned to appreciate that CO2 is acidic so it will add a tiny bit of "bite" to your drink. That works great for me as some of the fruit-flavored syrups run a bit more sweet than tart for my taste.

The liquid must be REALLY cold. The colder the better. If you carbonate room or tap temperature liquid, then there won't be much carbonation. I've owned Sparkle, and Sodastream and in both of the competitors they all recommend the colder the better. One up from this is the Sparkle system. No tanks required - only requires 1tbsp baking soda and citric acid. The downside is it requires electricity and requires 90s to carbonate. Sodastream sucks because it is ONLY designed for water, and the cost of their cartridges is a shot to the wallet. Drinkmate claims it can do other liquids other than water like the Sparkle system, but it requires a standard 60L cartridge. But luckily there are 3rd party cartridges which sell for half the price or less and many come with an exchange/replacement system to get another for even lower cost. I loved the Sparkle, but I wasn't in love with their poor bottle design. The carbon enters the bottle from the bottom, and the pressure release is on top. The liquid can escape from the bottom into the machine's drip tray with NO way to take the internal drip tray apart easily. There are KZbin tutorials on how to remove the 5 manufacturer screws to access the internal drip tray to clean it out. Sodastream is pure garbage. Too many models of machines to all do the same job with the exception of their electric models which control the exact level of gas instead of manually pressing and counting. All of their machines are made of plastic. Plus can't do anything but water. Even before this video I was leaning towards the Drinkmate system and because I found a 3rd party cartridge system compartible with Sodastream, Drinkmate and Arke (overpriced Swiss Stainless Steel soda machine that does the same job as Sodastream with the same limitations but at double cost). Drinkmate only has 1 machine and though similar to the average or lowest machine Sodastream has... at least it's a screw in type system instead of the newer snap lock system which has too many problems, leaks and exploding tank horror stories.
